When I was a beginner, I always opted to do the harder bodyweight progression rather than adding weight when I needed to make an exercise more challenging. That is until I hit a plateau and realized that I needed to strengthen my basics in order to get stronger. So, I started adding in weighted calisthenics, which became a staple in my routine for two years. It really helped me to increase my overall strength and allowed me to level up my calisthenics skills quite a bit. Although, I currently only workout at home, so I’m taking a brief break from it for six months. When I’m back to training at a gym, I’ll add it back to my routine. As strange as it sounds, my default when I’m tired will always be doing weighted calisthenics (like pull-ups, dips and z-press). Even though the weights are heavy, I find them much easier to perform on a mentally tired day as opposed to doing an exercise that requires more balance/coordination like a handstand push-up. I definitely miss having this option. In summary: Utilizing harder progressions and weighted calisthenics helped me continue to increase my strength, avoid plateaus, and progress my skills. The best answer is to do both. I like weights for microloading, but you eventually get strong enough that it's better from a stimulus/fatigue perspective to do harder variations rather than just keep adding weight IME

This.
@JaritOrigami2 ай бұрын
Why would it be better from a stimulus perspective to do a harder variation? Afding weight will surely make you stronger
@anthonychin86102 ай бұрын
@@JaritOrigami it's not necessarily better, it's comparably good for less fatigue cost. For example, you might do weighted chin ups with 50lbs or something like that before moving on to wide grip pullups with bodyweight. Eventually, you'd want to progress to wide grip weighted- and then consider moving on to something like archer pullups. Lifting heavy things is hard. It's the reason why even novices can't get away with deadlifting every day.

Nah you're wrong on this mate, nowhere in the scientific literature does it suggest any of you're assumptions are true. It even says it's wrong because for example there have been some studies done on bad stability training with was way less hypertrophy than excercices with good stability. Adding weight to a pull up (stable) is one of the best excercices for the lats when done in long lengthend partials. Doing different variations will wear out the other muscles to keep you stable which has been found to be less hypertrophic an strengthening. Hopefully you've learned something new ans succes on the grind man (also sorry for my english if there are mistakes and it's unreadable)
@anthonychin86102 ай бұрын
@@ilovebrittje4116 harder variations are more mechanically difficult, not necessarily more unstable. What I said is completely consistent with the literature you're citing, and with anecdotes from pro bodybuilders and calisthenics athletes alike.

Recent studies have shown that going to or near failure is what really stimulates muscle growth, and the number of reps is much less important than we once believed, so varying your workout like you do is probably much better for your joints than just going heavy all the time.

Weighted calisthenics is better than doing harder variants if the goal is strength and hypertrophy. Harder variations demand better joint mobility and technique. One arm pushups are a classic example where most people twist their whole body which leads to compensation.

As long as they don't take insane amount of time like body weight squats, I prefer to stick with the basics. You can make them slower and add pause between the movement phases to make them harder. For those exercises I have a good neuromuscular connection and mastered the technique which means low risk of injures. Also adding few more reps made me strong AND enduring.

I think both are necessary, it’s the same idea as body building vs strength training. In both of them progressive overload in weight is necessary and so is proper form. As you get stronger you add more weight but you might also consider hitting different muscle groups or biasing one muscle more than others in certain body weight variations. For example, dips can be a great chest workout or triceps workout depending on the angle of your body and of course in both you NEED to increase weight over time to see good progress in body and strength
@user-zc7nd2wd4pАй бұрын
Both are very important the add weight will provide you extra strength ans the different varieties of workouts will hit different muscles each time.

I think a combination is ideal. For the past two months I have focused on bodyweight exercises and have seen good gains, but I'm beginning to hit a plateau. Starting today, I'm going to switch to a weighted phase and run with it for as long as I feel like I'm getting stronger before eventually switching back to bodyweight/volume. I have a power tower at home and around 50Kg in plates plus a dip belt. I love keeping it simple and lifting without distractions.
