"Most of you listening probably assume that the best of Yurik had been and gone...that he had wrung the water from the stone--but he hadn't. Greatness is, indeed, measured by the height of the peak, but legends are measured by the number of peaks--by the size of the mountain range." Take a bow, Seb. Always knew you were a poet, but you've outdone yourself here.

These videos are fantastic and I think it’s amazing to tell these stories of the great weightlifters. My grandfather was one of the coaches of Rolf Milser and would always tell me about tales of many of these legends when I was younger. HOWEVER, I think it is a bit dishonest to make comparisons between these athletes (ones like Yuri Vardanyan) and modern ones. Of course we don’t know everything that is going on behind the scenes nowadays, and I don’t want to make accusations, but we do know a lot about what was happening in weightlifting at the time (even if there is not always evidence, and again I don’t want to make specific accusations). Basically, it’s fairly likely that these achievements, though of course still the product of incredible work ethic, (often) genetics and incredible training systems, also made use of performance enhancing drugs that allowed these athletes to achieve awe inspiring feats, and to entirely brush over that doesn’t do justice to many other athletes and frankly the sport as a whole. It, for better or for worse, has just been a part of the game and ignoring the elephant in the room just seems a little silly to me. We should hold this sport to a high standard and try our best to push it and the politics surrounding it in the right direction, but I think it’s also crucial to be honest about our sport and own up to the history. Anyone who knows anything about performance enhancing drugs in a sport like weightlifting knows that these drugs don’t just gift/give you results for free and they don’t take away from the achievements. These athletes worked their asses off and used what they used so they could squeeze out just that bit more, recover faster and do it all over again. But they (many of them) still did it (took PEDs) and again, I think it’s just important to at least acknowledge that when we’re educating everyone - and potentially future generations of weightlifters - about this sport and it’s history. But maybe that’s just my opinion. Nonetheless, amazing freaking job: these videos are a pleasure to watch and bring some of the highs of this sport to life in a way no one else is doing! Love your stuff Seb, keep it up!
