Many years back, Tommy Kono, the great American weightlifter, would concentrate on bodybuilding exercises in his off-season. He said that it extended his career as it strengthened all the smaller, supporting muscles, and that anchored the muscle, so to speak. This was before Pisarenko, and even before Kono, there was John Grimek, who was on the 1936 American weightlifting team and who had a fantastic physique. You usually have great vids, but a bit more historical research might be in order.
@GilBatesLovesyou
@GilBatesLovesyou 10 ай бұрын
I think so too. Of some note, Tommy Kono also competed in bodybuilding and won AAU Bodybuilding shows, when the AAU had control of amateur sports in USA. Back then at weightlifting meets there would be bodybuilding shows, and it was in some ways like one sport. Bodybuilding even had an athletic component to it by the AAU standard, and a lot of athletes would do a clean and jerk to show their athleticism. One of my thoughts about programming seems to be in some ways like we're going full circle back to the 1950s. In that before the late 50s and early 60s, anabolics more or less didn't exist, and bodybuilding and general training was considered a big part of weightlifting training. I'm very hesitant to say "natty" but I think under more drug tested conditions athletes need to do more purposeful bodybuilding to improve, as before you could just do the lifts and squats let the drugs handle the work of the strength and muscle mass improvements, and neurological drive to lift heavy weights.

I used to compete in weightlifting. I got Tommy Kono's book. I followed his advice. Got super jacked for my height/weight class over the course of 2 years (5'5" went from 71kg and filled out to a very lean 77kg and 100% natural), also managed to hit PRs across like 9 competitors. I was a low level intermediate when I started, but the bodybuilding helped me to develop more than the pure weightlifting I was doing for the alsmot 2 year before.

Small pet peeve but I don’t know where the whole “Lee Sang” thing came from (best guess is because Sang Yeon’s social media handles are written as that) but his name is Lee Sang Yeon (pronounced EE Sang Yeon too, not Lee, Korean romanization being terrible is a whole another topic) In any case, you’d call him either by his full name or just Sang Yeon, a combination of his family name and first name is such a bizarre way to call a Korean. It’s like calling Lee Byunghyun Lee Byung. Great video and analysis as always though!

Back when the clean and press was a competition lift, the bulk of a lifter's training had to be concentrated on training the press. Consequently most of the lifters of that time had decent physiques. A few of them would hang back and front up for the physique contest that was usually held in conjunction with the major competitions, and did surprisingly well. Phil Gripaldi was the best example of that. At 90kg at just 5' 6" tall, he had 21" upper arms!

Obvious statement about obvious AAS use that no one can actually confirm and never will. How about we all just focus on the other things we know about the guy? Seems like a hard worker with elite genetics that has a lifestyle conducive to training and recovery. I think focusing on the other things we can all assume to be taking place but can’t prove is unnecessary and not useful. I think Seb hit the nail on the head by putting the emphasis on his training here. That’s something we can learn from. His potential use of PEDs doesn’t make any of the rest of us better.

No but PED's do allow for training volumes that an average person will not be able to sustain. Especially if you are older. I am not against programs and I think a lot of them are a great place to start but once you learn your body you can better decide what loads are appropriate for you without pushing yourself to a much higher injury risk. Especially if you are trying to follow an elite level lifters program and you don't have access to the supplements they do or the lifestyle that allows you to spend 6-8hrs in a gym/recovery facility and then sleep however long you want.

these online weightlifters need to get out of their bubble sometimes and meet even regular talented people in commercial gyms that take lifting (not weightlifting) semi-seriously. People on PEDs with amazing genetics that do zero bodybuilding look like Clarence who is already jacked with vascular arms. Now imagine if Clarence actually did a curl once in his life (he confirmed he never has) and had to stay in let's say the 96kg class - he'd look like a physique competitor, far more impressive than Lee Sang. With the amount of bodybuilding plus high volume weightlifting (yes weightlifting is hypertrophic too) Lee Sang does it's 100% possible to achieve naturally given his height and the fact he's a world-class athlete too. The amount of nihilistic delusion by people who have no experience outside of their bubbles in these comments is sad. (And this has nothing to do with whether I think elite Olympic level athletes are natural btw)

Physique has more to do with genetics, rather training protocol

This all day, bodybuilding overlay over weightlifting training, is simply not doable for the clean, continually drug tested lifter. This person only approaches the physiques of the Chinese weightlifters and his many technique quirks, like theirs, are glossed by what is really going on here. In fairness to Weightlifting House, the saving grace here is the qualification that trying to do this may not be optimal training as a standard method.

Obviously he’s on PEDs, but guys can achieve his physique naturally-it’s just not really possible to do so while being a world class weight lifter at the same time.

you guys act like he's about to go IFBB pro and weighs 85kg at 5'4 lol. It's absolutely possible to look like that while being an elite weightlifter at 5'4 and 67kg

His level of muscle is achieveable, but his level of leanness is not achievable or maintainable for natties

Come on, you can't be this lean, and also this full looking and strong at the same time, it's ridiculous to think these athletes are clean

They aren't. Its a matter of degrees & types of PED usage plus great genetics. No one can be competitive being natty, atleast not for the last 30-40yrs
