I've been the proud owner of 2 Weims and my husband 3. We took our dogs for professional training at 6 months old and it is truely very well worth the cost. However, the most important thing to keep your weim's behavior in limits is to take them somewhere every day where they can run free and play for a hour at least. We also had a 1/2 acre yard that was fenced in for them. Even in the winter they need to be outside as much as possible. Our trainer started out by telling me that in order to train a dog you have to be smarter than the dog - and with a weim that is sometimes a challenge. Over the years we certainly were kept thinking on our feet by those dogs. However, the level of affection they give you makes any thing worthwhile.

I am a new weimaraner owner and I feel as though I go through all the emotions with mine. Houdini has nothing in this breed. I have never met a smarter dog. They are so observant. My dog amazes me. I am a runner and hiker and I sprained my knee so I was not able to take my pup out for runs and walk often. He sometimes made me want to pull my hair out with his destructive tendencies. But he is so loving and absolutely adorable... and those eyes!! I can't refuse him a treat.

Mine is awesome. He is a therapy dog for my autistic son. Those two are adorable!!! However he craves my attention most of the time and chooses to sleep next to my bed. When we have sleepover company he sleeps in the hall as if guarding my son and myself. He won't let anyone into the back part of the house. I love my Thor so much.

I had a weimaraner that lived for 16 years she was my girl mountain biking 3 times a week for 20 miles and she was there next to me...I do missed her ..after her death she passed away on my lap..I said I will never get another one...2 years went by and I had to get another one...now 3 years later I love her like I loved my previous one...and yes they are a special breed n yes they love to be with you 24/7...but I rather have her company than a human at any given time ..I have so much fun with her at the dog park beach... etc weimaraners rule the world.

I found a boy about 2 years ago. He is an awesome guy. But now he is showing some aggression issues to his little brother. Idk much about this bread can you possibly assist me. I might need to neuter him but idk if that will help the aggression

Congratulations on 16 years. Clearly you took care of her. My little girl lived to be 14. Everyone likes to say their favorite breed is best, but my experience was Weimaraners are unique in intelligence and constant desire to be with you. Give them a lot of love and attention and you will be amazed. Harsh training or ignoring them will only make things worse for both of you.

A very fair analysis. Should add that don't think you can leave him alone while you go to work. He will eat your house. Also look out for gastric torsion in that the stomach can flip and twist if exercised too soon after a meal.
@byrde43293 жыл бұрын
Very accurate. They ARE absolutely escape artists and they'll dig/chew through a fence to escape like it's nothing. I've never seen a breed so good at escaping anything. One thing, I have personally never seen or heard of a Weimaraner being aggressive. They are extremely energetic and will unintentionally knock over others such as small kids. They're not meant to be kept inside all day because it's just not in their nature to be lazy. They need LOTS of outdoor time but need to be watched carefully because before you know it they'll chew/dig through your fence and will be running wild through your neighborhood. They are very mischievous and clumsy yet smart and playful. Even with all of this, they're my favorite breed hands down.

We adopted a 4 month weim, I had 2nd thoughts for about 2 months. He was not fully potty trained & he “nooked” on every blanket, sheet, pillowcase, ect. (Something I think should be mentioned in this video) after 2 months he stole mine & my husband’s heart like NO OTHER BREED has, & throughout our lives we have had a array of breeds. He sleeps between us in the bed & always UNDER the covers 😂. The intelligence he has amazes me! He continuously makes me laugh. We have a 12 yo English chocolate lab & an Aussiedoodle we rescued & the 3 of them get along soooo good. He is extremely jealous of my other 2 getting love, he tries to come between me & them but he’s not mean at all. He does NOT like small dogs 😢 we found this out at the boarding resort they stay at when we’re on vacations. His most favorite thing to do is chase shadows in the back yard, shadows from birds, bees, hummers, ect. he doesn’t actually try to get them, just their shadows 😂😂😂 He will be 2 in October & we made the BEST choice EVER adopting him! I pray he lives to 15 or older! Weim = LOVE ❤️

We had the buried electric fence (HOA did not allow a real fence) and our dog learned it in one day. It would beep 3 ft before the shock and she could be at a full run - when she heard the beep it was 4 paw brakes all the way. We only had the collar set at the lowest shock level - the one for very small dogs.Weims are smart enough to learn from that - no need to brutilize them. By the time we had that fence a week , we were able to take off the collar - she had already learned the perimeter.

There's one other con: because they're a barrel chested breed they can suffer from a twisted stomach as they get older. It happened to my mum's Weim. She found it cowering in the bushes in pain in her garden. He needed an operation to fix it.

My 2 Weimaraner’s are the best dogs I’ve ever had. I had my 3 cats first and they put my Weimaraner’s in their place as puppies. Now they all sleep together as buddies. My female Weimaraner is the most intelligent dog, she figured out how to unplug the electrical fence, the vacuum cleaner and she is a escape artist. My male Weimaraner is just the opposite, he is dumb as dirt, but so lovable. My Tortie cats truly rule the house.

Any tips on the cats? I've had two cats for 7 years and just got a wim puppy two weeks ago. They're getting along better but he always wants to chase them.
@gunner2gunner3 жыл бұрын
@@finn9000 so sorry I’m just seeing this for the first time. Your puppy should be a month old, but he is still a puppy. Your cats, if they haven’t gotten tried of the chasing will either hide under the bed or they will jump up on the furniture or counter tops. Cats are not stupid, they know where to go when they want to be left alone or they put the puppy in his place with a smack on his nose. The puppy will leave his place in the pack/pride.
@finn90003 жыл бұрын
@@gunner2gunner hey no worries, the cats aren't an issue anymore, he's almost 3 months now and is already very well trained. Only issue is that he still bites me and only me. He gets extremely playful and rough with me and doesn't seem to be able to calm down (again only with me).
@gunner2gunner3 жыл бұрын
@@finn9000 your puppy’s adult teeth are coming in and it can take up to 6 months for him to get all his adult teeth in. He is teething and biting probably due to this. Him biting you is probably because he is closer to you, meaning he has a stronger bond with you. You should pick a word to use instead of the word No with your puppy. I use the word Nein which is No in German, because I use No a lot with my kids and I don’t want my dogs to think I’m telling them No. Your puppy is only 3 months so he is still young to switch out the word No with another word like Nein that’s only used with your puppy.

Weimarner cons Clinginess - You will never poop alone again. Extra clinginess - They may even lean on your leg while your pooping Extreme con - If your weim is not with you when your in the bathroom, its probably getting into and destroying something. Pros - everything. They are a great breed to have.

My pup was a big barker when I wasn’t home but other than that only when strangers stepped on our property. Wicked smart and the best with my children when they were small, sadely he died at 14 when my kids were still young, would definitely recommend if you are active and have room for him to rome around.
@richard-fy2mu3 жыл бұрын
Had three oldest 14 sadly youngest died 9 they are not prone to be mean but heather was an abused rescue so be aware they can bite and their teeth and jaws are amazingly strong for size. All three were couch potatoes . One thing! Ear care is a big issue and ear infections costly. Also dental hygiene is a must care or plan on a bill that makes you have heart issues. Over all if breeder is good, vet check on puppy and love your new friend.

The need so much attention. We got one when I was 10. My Parents were working in different shifts and my brother and me were still in school. So we could take turns in attending to his needs. Every day I went for a walk of 5km (3miles), mostly my dad for an additional walk. We went for those walks 1 or 2 times a day, 3 times on a weekend day, or I took him to the woods for 2-4h (20km/12miles). I was a school kid, living in the countryside, I had the time. Adding up all the walks my dad, brother and I did with him, it was 50-100km (30-60miles) every week. I had those tours mapped out, so I know the distances

Sometimes Weim issues display as an hysterical sense of humor. You can see it coming because the pupils expand as if they are in the dark, and they will pull something you have no reason to expect, and trying to correct is often lost because you are doubled up laughing. Nor really a negative, just a feature.
