Ok this is my $.02 , Mopars are very different from others , , Rod ratio is a longer above 1.8 on a stock 440 & still above 1.7 on a 512 stroked build , so the piston moves faster in the middle stroke & stops longer at both ends of the stroke this increases velocity in the head & continues to fill the cylinder at the bottom with the piston stopped & allows longer combustion time as it initially moves away from TDC slower , this has a huge effect on the effectiveness of the ports & requires very different cam grinds ! I have never struggled to make great power with "small" Mopar heads

B-1s ported are beautiful things!...easy 8 sec ride when done properly. I run 270 TF on my #2 back up 496...650HP on a 10.6 engine is very easy. Also keep in mind most 500 ci mopars don't need to be spun past 6200, to make so decent big #s on pump gas. The B1 shines at 7k and up.

I built an Indy 440-1 heads (as cast mild clean up and VG) 440 (stock stroke x .030 over bore) back 30 years ago. Customer didn't have the budget for a roller cam setup so these numbers are off the shelf flat tappet and RPM limited by spring pressure. It made 730hp @ 7400RPM. It had not reached peaked HP when valve float stopped it @ 7400. And yea, it was weak on torque @ around 550lbs/ft due to the camshaft compromise. He put it in a very heavy 70's Cuda @ 3700+lbs w/ auto trans. It ran some 10.20's, with 10.40-10.50 range being normal. Those heads flowed around 375cfm if I remember correctly. So yea, there are much better heads available. The heads I used had bigger max wedge size intakes and raised exhaust ports. Any version of the B-1 heads would kill the Indy heads I used for HP potential.
@michaw1674 Жыл бұрын
Indy heads can flow 400+ with standard valve, but I know guys that make over 900hp on big bore setups with 440-1 heads that were seriously worked with chamber mods. B1 stuff is very good but more work and money needs to be put in them. Nice numbers on 440, would work great in some a body.

To be fair, Mopar designed the B/RB engines to be smooth and torquey for stock, street driven cars. The 270 Trick Flow is based on the Max Wedge engines of the early 60's. The engineers understood that the standard designed heads just weren't up to the task and set about to design a better head. But they finally decided to make a radical departure and of course they came up with the '64 Race Hemi and those heads flow pretty respectably for a big block head designed almost 60 years ago. From tests I've seen on stock 426 Hemi heads, 320 to 330 cfm max flow is about their limit. And of course they were ported from there.
@timothybayliss66802 жыл бұрын
Those flow numbers would be really good for a 240cc sbc head. I know the relatively big valves help out. Compared to something like a 240cc aluminum cleveland head with similar valve sizes these heads still hold their own.

Yes. Serious mopar guys are running B1 or Indy heads. The trick flow are best for low deck 400 strokes kits. The weight of the pistons on mopar big blocks restrict rpm. But before you count them out. A 440 stroker and stock cast heads / on bias ply tires are running faster them the s10! That's also with cast intake and manifolds!

@vipottaja2 жыл бұрын
Have those heads on a 400. The size is pretty healthy for that size for about 7000 rpm. The problem with BB mopar heads is the factory port opening, it's only about the same size as in a SB chevy. They had a bigger port used in early 60's, Max Wedge, and there are heads for that size (like the 270cc TF), but the intake availability is very limited, and it's still not very big for a 500 cu in or more. You keep telling about the awful chamber of the BBM aftermarket heads, I believe it's partially because they want that you can use any (domed) pistons meant for the factory heads with them. Factory valve placement (not optimal) and angle pretty much dictates that. The B1's are much less compromised, but of course no factory parts can be used with them. There are others too, Indy Cylinder heads have a good selections of heads from mild to wild to full fill almost all needs. I personally have FBS heads on my big block. They are closer to B1's but with even higher and smaller ports, and flow pretty well for the size.
