This is a video EVERYONE should watch!!!! Great job, Joe.. Didn't seem like they would change much on the 240 heads at all!! A bit of easing of the edge of the chambers and maybe another angle to the seats.. I have dealt with a few machine shops in my time and I don't think many take this kind of time to dig into things.. I run the TF 240’s on my ‘70 440 GTX. I put them on 2 years ago and man, it’s night and day difference. I rebuilt the 440 10 years ago, basically stock, just a little bigger cam. Two years ago, removed the 915 heads, exhaust manifolds and the cast iron intake. It now has an Edelbrock performer RPM intake, 800 Edelbrock carb, TF 240 heads and 1 7/8” TTI headers and 3 inch exhaust. No more gas in the carb boiling or engine running hot issues. The car runs hard!! I love it. It’ll spin the tires at 35 mph and below (275/60/15 and 3:55 gears).

There are other great builders who really know their stuff. Some a "small" names and some are big, and there are luckily several great engine builders and machinists out there to choose from.

The cat chasing his tail.ANYONE considering purchasing new heads is better off buying bare castings and having a reputable machine shop such as Ed's correct/complete the machining and assembly.All head manufacturers have problems.It's the nature of the beast now a days.

Always been the small block guy back in the 70's. But I own a 400 now. Sure wish You would rebuild it for me. Your attention to detail is fantastic. Its a 78 400. Needs more compression like new pistons and shorter rods for lower rod/ stroke ratio (only because it doesn't dwell at top dead center so long being in a RV and needed a broader torque curve the shorter r/s ratio will give). Love Your channel and you have all kinds of goodies (Mopar Parts). Heck I would even trade the 400 for a mild 383 build. Be nice to see you build a big stroker out of it to sell or keep. Thanks Joe

That was really cool Joe, i loved it because years ago trick flow didn't offer Mopar heads and rpm's were the greatest since slice bread and i was caught up in the 440 source deal which i have had great luck with there products but have never bought an aluminum head, just had a race shop do my 906'sand 915's so several years later you have showed me a lot..... my cars have setting for over 8 years which is blasphemy i know but your channel and a few others are 🔥 the much needed candle under my ASS.... thanks buddy 👍👍👍👍👍✅✅✅✅✅

Whoop Whoop, I wrestled with the this very decision and l’m lucky I guessed correctly and bought the Trick Flow 190’s for my 5.9 Magnum. Wish you had done this video last year wouldn’t have banged my head deliberating the cost difference between the Eddie’s n Trick Flow. (Running the Trick Flows on the 5.9 have the added cost of the specially designed rollers Rockers to be able to run LA style Heads on an Magnum Motor) Another great video! You never disappoint!!

I always envied the TrickFlow Ford "R" heads and 18* Chevy heads, and was glad to see them get into the MoPar market!! In the early 2000s, an AFR rep told me that there were no plans to do SB or BB MoPar heads, but that they were contemplating Gen 3 Hemi stuff. Now I see that AFR has come through, finally, for the late Hemi fans!!

Another GREAT LESSON ON HEADS, justmopowerjoespeedjuiceschool!!! These guys explained a lot of the differences I was asking about if these manufacturers where changing the port locations, like rasing the intake and exhaust ports to cut down on the turn the air has to take to get into the combustion chambers! I still wonder why they aren't moving the exhaust ports up higher to keep the exhaust air from hitting the top of the exhaust runner so hard when coming from combustion chambers. I am Electrician as you know Joe so So I have ran a lot of pipe and pushed a lot of wires through them and that's why my ideas in my head about the port locations are the way they are I feel curtain . I believe if the ports on exhaust side where higher and then the headers would have a more gradual turn before heading down instead of the really tight turn down the flow numbers as a whole would have to increase considerably. My ways of thinking are much different then most so if this is confusing to some of my fellow Mopar buddies or you Joe my apologies lol. I guess I think of the heads as just part of the team so the air exiting and how well the intake manifolds and headers are able to reduce the turns should mean a lot as a whole with how well the heads can flow. I can run a pipe straight and say hey this pipe flows more air then any pipe in the world but if I put 90 degree bends right after it and before it then my straight peice would be crap even if someone purchased it as being the best air flowing pipe ever made but as part of the complete system my straight peice would hurt overall flow because I wasn't considering before or after it and what I would have to deal with after it. Flow numbers on heads are done on a bench, real flow numbers should be done as a whole from the air filter to the exhaust tip and how the complete system works together, I feel like there is so much more that could be done to help the overall picture if engineers would think this way. As a team I could have on paper the greatest QB in NFL but if i didn't consider the receivers I have in place then the QB isn't really that important anymore or if the QB doesn't care about the overall team then his position is no longer important as the paper shows

Great stuff Joe! If I ever get a set of aluminum heads, I’d probably go with the 440 Source heads, just for the personal preference of the stock looking ends on them (I love that), but knowing I would have to put some more money, porting and a few parts into them too. Now if only there was someone who could mill the ends of the Trick Flows to look stock lol!

Trick Flow is what I will be using for my next build. I went with E Street heads because I was over on my budget. I’m not going to be bracket racing, just playing, so it should be fine. Great learning video Joe!

Trickflow styff is usually top notch btw they probably use a Newen CNC vlave job machine. The debur work is probably done on the cnc as well

Certainly shows the difference between an entry head vs something a bit more high end. Obviously if budget is not the determining factor the Trick flow heads win. The Edelbrock head is a good deal for a mild street hydraulic build. The cost to rework a stock iron head at the machine shop vs an aluminum alternative is something everyone needs to consider during their build. Nice vid)

It’s been many years now but when I bought my first set of Eddy RPM’s back when they first came out, BTW were the first affordable aluminum heads, I felt like they added 50 horse to my 440. I’m sure the Trick Flows are a lot more. Enjoyed that video.

Hey Mopar Joe I have a question for you. I'm putting cast iron heads on a 408 stroker with ARP head bolts. What should the torque specs be on that?. I keep hearing conflicting stories. Thanks

I would absolutely have to look it up. I usually go off the sheet included with the bolts. It’s usually 10-20lbs more than stock. I’m sorry, but don’t want to steer you wrong. Maybe A viewer can chime in here!

It was all down to price for me. My Edelbrocks were around $1350 for the pair. I did have them checked and valve job done, but they were still much less expensive than the trickflows or Indy’s. I also figured with my small cubic inch (mine was 406) I didn’t need max wedge ports.

What is the difference between trickflo 240 and 270 heads? Is it just the cc's and why would you chose one over the other? For compression?

It’s the volume of the runner. My Edelbrocks have 210 cc runners. They’re a more optimal head for bare bones street, vs full race. The 270 is kind of a full race style head. Works best with a big solid roller cam and lift above .600. That’s not a street cam. The Edelbrocks will work better with the 210 cc runners and a smaller cam, at lower Rpms and lower lift levels. Now if you have a stroker, that kinda shifts. Because of the extra cubic inches, it will puff and blow more air. It inherently makes more torque from the longer stroke, and would like the larger CC heads like a 240.

@@ultimatejay call Bruce Toth. He’s a pro shop that buys the Chinese castings and loads them with good parts. Also does port work and will talk to you about the process. I believe he is $2200 for a set ported and out the door. Less if you don’t want as extensive port work. But they’ll be matched to your cam specs and truly be bolt on ready.

rewatched this and think , if i wanted to go to a good set of aftermarket heads i would splurge on the 270 cnc heads and camshaft to match that Valve spring pressure, i would not buy and have someone port heads for me, unless they can do it for same price difference

Definitely an option. I think the main point of the video was to show that most aftermarket heads still need checked out before bolting them on. I may buy a bare cast set next time and have Ed get valves, springs, and hardware. Then he does final assembly with the valve job.

The Edelbrock heads were designed when there was no other head’s available for the bb Mopar other than the B1. So making them better was low on the list of must haves.

From my research, the chamber design has changed over the years. I will update how my heads do after the first season of racing.

The difference between the two is the e street is a entry level budget head price and the trick flow cnc is more money you get what you pay for.

think i would have paid a little more and went with indy heads some roughness on the intake side improves wet flow but then you run into how much is too much

A little more in this case was over $1,000. I believe the Edelbrocks were better than a 440 source head, but with Have some soon to compare to.

It's OK to look, measure, lapp valves, V/Spring pressure and rate, inspect guide clrc. and check everything.... in fact you should always do that with anyone's Head. But seeing as how this is a performance build.... why no Flow test comparison on the same Flow Bench ?

Both heads have flow numbers out there. I was looking for quality on each and needed improvements.

with these 2 sets of heads you get what you pay for . I still think that the factories could do a better job before the heads leave the factory .

TrickFlow are undoubtedly the best heads for our MOPARs. We dont have many options; Edelbrpcks are good, but the combbustion chamber design of the TrickFlow heads and the port flow numbers crush Edelbrock..

No one can argue that. But the Edelbrocks are $1,000 less. Can they perform better thy much better than stock and still save you that much money? How much better is the trick flow? I’ve got a build and dyno test coming with these 240’s

I thin it's so odd that no head manufacture can deliver a true ready to run head. I don't care whether it says AFR, TFS, Profiler, Edelbrock or Brodix on the box, there's always something. I've seen some of the worst valveseats on AFR heads.

It's a shame you can't get a ton of time on an engine dyno and put all the different Mopar BB heads on the same engine, (RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX), and show the real differences!! 440 Source will be on the bottom of the ladder...

Looks like I made the better choice with the Edelbrocks. Especially after Ed and Wayne are finished! They are unrecognizable now.

You stated you ordered a set of 270 heads with solid roller springs......and then stated they had too much seat pressure for your hydraulic roller cam.......NO Kidding......all you have to do is order the correct set up in the first place.....NOT Trick Flow's fault.

That’s what I figured on with this set. I had planned on getting them stripped apart, new valve job, guides honed, etc. Next time I may start with a bare casting and have Ed build them right the first time.

@@JustMoparJoe I flew out to INDY cyl head in the early 90s and carried a full top end set back in hand luggage inc a 1050 Dominator, one of the last set hand ported back then, they were a thing of beauty, the whole kit was. I had a '64 Valiant with a stock bore and stroke 440, with Crower billet rods, (Crower thought I was nuts ordering stock length 440 NASCAR spec rods LOL) with Venolia pistons in it, , it went 10.08 n/a @3300lb Im looking at a set of those trick Flows as I still have my '68 Roadrunner here in the UK which I have owned for the last 38years but getting stuff over here these days is a fkn nightmare, I would prob have to pay around $9K for that lot now in your money. What about 273 mopar trick flow vs Edelbrock performer heads. Which gives more power on the 273? Does one flow better etc

With the small bore of the 273,I would look at the valve spacing and sizes. The intake valves maybe shrouded heavily into the cylinder walls when they open. This would be a good question for “Ed’s machine”.
