One of the coolest moments in my life (top 20) was seeing Weird Al at Six Flags in St. Louis years ago. After the show he was walking around (getting mobbed) & when my friend & I finally had a moment next to him we offered to buy him Dippin Dots because he was standing next to the cart & he obliged. We sat there & ate Dippin Dots with AL, hung out for about 10-15 minutes (which felt like hours to my pre-pubescent self) & he actually talked to us like we were hanging out. Other people were coming up but he kept coming back to us. It probably wasn't as incredible as I remember but the memory is there & it's real.

Yo, I was a stagehand when he played Kings Island in Cincinnati, and I was going to say what's up to him when we ate lunch- he was there before everyone, and left before everyone got there, most likely to get ready for the incredible show I had no idea he put on. Costume changes? I mean, WTactualF?! My friend and I got to catering a little early, and he joked and said "you wanna go sit right next to him" because we were the only three in the tent (other than the cooks). I did think that would be funny just because there was so much room, naturally, but I figured he was busy because he had that foregone look like he was thinking about a bunch. He _might_ have thought it was funny. Each one of us going to either of his sides, then talking to each other like he wasn't there. He does have "weird" in his name... But you really make me wish I had at least said hello and told him how much I loved him. I literally heard so much popular music at the time from his versions first. And to this day, I know the lyrics to those versions and love them more.

Neal, the diagnostic process for autism spectrum disorder is a lengthy and comprehensive undertaking, especially for adults, due to a variety of reasons. This is especially true for adults getting diagnosed for the first time because ASD features are nuanced, with the presentation being subtle and varied, and hence likely to be missed if a clinician is inexperienced. A lot of psychiatrists tend to miss it as well for the same reason. I’m saying all this to essentially drive home the point that online ASD questionnaires including “masking” questionnaires have poor reliability to arrive at an accurate diagnosis. So it makes sense that your experience with these tests have yielded different results. I highly recommend your viewers to seek out a psychologist specialising in autism and ADHD if they suspect they may be on the spectrum.

I just got to say Neal, this interview is so good. And several of your guests on here, has become new favorites of mine because you have allowed them to talk in a relaxed and sincere way. So I have a better view of them after. And I’ve seen them in other podcasts, where that has not happened. So it is something about how great of an interviewer you are. It never becomes shouty, hysteric or too loud. And not constant interrupting either. Just great!

You absolutely should go. Even the tour where he played almost all non parody songs (because he does those, too), and it was a very downsized production vs his regular stage show, I went to it as the first show of his I had ever seen based on his reputation. I only knew a few of the non hits and was in the very back row. No matter-- the show was terrific, and I see several "big" acts each year. Al has such great musicianship and a terrific rapport with the audience that you would love it even if you never heard of him before. My adult son became a big fan and now we've seen him two additional times with other tours. He never fails to impress. We were 2nd row last time (not by design, we just lucked into the tickets two hours before show time). Up close, you can see him a bit off stage and his communication with his band. He is what you see on screen.

Al - I'll tell you why you have longevity and shouldn't have imposter syndrome. You make parodies of songs (and originals) that are easily accessible and deceptively straightforward, but when people listen multiple times, they realize how deep the songs go both musically and lyrically, and we become lifelong fans. Even the way you'll refer back to the original lyrics and even use the same rhyming schemes are gold nuggets found upon repeated listens. I have been listening to you for 35 years and I only realized the other day when I was showing my nephew "When I Was Your Age" that it was your take on Don Henley. You're the gift that just keeps giving. Thank you for everything.

Weird Al used to play the Hersheypark Amphitheatre every year in the 90s, and I'd see him there whenever possible. It was the highlight of my year. In 1996 we were in line for the new Wildcat rollercoaster that had just opened (I think it was literally the first day the public could ride it). Al joined the line and chatted with us while we waited. He was a super chill guy. I thought to myself, "Wow, this guy doesn't act like a big rock star. I wonder if he's an imposter." Then some other folks queued up behind us and realized who he was, and he politely excused himself to talk to them for a few minutes and maybe sign some autographs, before coming back and joking with us while we finished waiting. He must have sensed our potential for greatness. Now, as a configuration specialist for a small software company, I feel I've finally made it. Thanks, Al, I couldn't have done it without your tacit encouragement!

TL;DR version: Keep physical media!! "Old" tapes and CDs and VHS and DVDs and printed books and photo albums: these are worthwhile, and should be saved! 1:05:00 - I've mostly just been enjoying this episode, because I love Weird Al so much, and learning new things about him, he's so relatable. Impostor syndrome, thoughts about mortality, etc, so interesting. Thank you for this in-depth interview! But for sure I had to speak up in defense of physical media, like CDs. Non-physical media- digital media- is SO convenient. Its invention and proliferation is super neat. It's helped bring the world together, able to share with each other as we never have before. It's great. But when there's something that I want to HAVE, it has to be on a piece of physical media that I can hold in my hands. Streaming is convenient, but it's not permanent. Services can simply decide not to offer a song or a show or a film anymore, and now I don't have it anymore. Services decide who gets in, and who doesn't. Services will NOT last forever; that's just the nature of business, and technology is always changing. Where would something like the Doctor Demento Show even BE without the weirdos that kept the random 45 single of some guy who made that weird song in 1947 and never made music again? The effort was preserved in that physical 45 record, or reel to reel tape recording. Those one hit wonders that today might be on KZbin or Instagram, what happens to them? There's a saying that "the internet is forever"; once you put it out there, it's out of your hands, and may wash ashore again at any moment, so be careful. But the internet is also extremely ephemeral, and it may NOT be forever! It exists on servers and such, but it's not tangible. To truly OWN something, to truly keep a record of something that existed, we still very much need physical media. PHOTO ALBUMS!! A lot of people are taking old family albums and scanning them in and uploading their family history to "the cloud" and then throwing the original albums in a dumpster! You have no control over the cloud; it doesn't belong to you, except through the permission of some company. Even if you have saved these digital files to your own personal hard drive: how fast does technology change? How are your great-grandchildren going to access those hard drives, with no indication from the outside of what is on them? You have thrown away the only physical evidence of what your great-grandfather's face looked like, and your great-grandchildren will have no way of accessing those digital files, because their computers will be so different from today. But a physical photo album- if taken care of- can last for generations. Maybe make a back-up copy, just in case of a disaster. Make sure your relatives have copies, just in case. But don't intentionally throw that physical album in the trash; that's a waste. I feel that to be true, SO very strongly! And especially if you're someone like Weird Al who can more than afford to have a CD closet to keep all of those physical items: please do it! He's not in that one-bedroom apartment anymore; he can spare some space for a CD collection. We have special vaults and warehouses to store old film stock, and preserve movies that would otherwise be lost to time, as so many already have. In those early days of films, the film itself would often be melted down and re-made into new film stock, the original being completely lost forever! We have archives of old books from centuries ago, that are preserved and cherished. Many of these things have been scanned, digitized, so that they can more easily be shared with others around the globe without the physical object. And as long as the technology is kept up, these digital versions can be a valuable resource for preservation. But they don't throw away The Book of Kells, just because they have a digital version so the physical one is obsolete. Now, of course: not every single CD you own has the cultural significance of a medieval manuscript. But it is a part of history, in its own way. Maybe you don't need to keep every shirt you've ever owned. You don't need to keep every fast-food receipt you've ever gotten. Attics and basements are filled with the flotsam and jetsam of lives, and not all of it is really necessary. Hoarding CAN be a problem, for sure. But media has its place in the world, and should not be treated as disposable. CDs and other such things have a place. If someone has a collection of physical media- printed books, CDs, tapes, DVDs, VHS, 8-tracks, Betamax, whatever: if you're downsizing and considering "getting rid of" those things: please, PLEASE find someplace to donate them, or find a collector who will take them. A library. A school. Resale shop. Someone on Craigslist. Please do not simply throw them in a dumpster or a trash compactor, to be gone forever. They deserve to be kept in some way, even if it's not going to be in your house anymore. I am such an advocate for the preservation of physical media. -My 2¢

Weird Al 1000% should do a kpop parody. It would introduce him to a new generation yet again. I love him so much.

I remember seeing Al maybe 25 years ago, because a close friends mother worked for a newspaper, and he always got free tickets for all sorts of events..... I remember being so impressed by AL, and how much work goes into one of his live performances. Definitely recommend seeing him alive if you get a chance.

Was going to write a letter but it will be thrown out-thanks Suzanne!!!-so I’ll leave a comment instead. So many warm feelings from listening to Al in my formative years. In 4th-6th grade we’d go to my friend’s house and sit in bean bag chairs and chill out with the Dare to Stupid album playing in the background. But Al’s was with me my entire developmental life. First heard Eat It in preschool! Fat and Lasagna were jams in elementary school. Was a big fan of Amish Paradise in high school! White and Nerdy was so big in college, I didn’t even know what the original was. Was excited to see him with the Aquabats on socials recently (that would be a fun collaboration). A musical featuring his hits would be amazing too!

That was great. I was a teenager when Weird Al came on the scene. It's great to see him still navigating a very volatile creative landscape. To his point he could have easily had his moment and disappeared.

I've been to 2 concerts in my whole life. The first was the Rolling Stones, and the second was Weird Al, 20 years later. If I had to pick only one, I'd go with Weird Al.
