I don't think anyone actually thinks knowledge is unhip unless they're anti-intellectual. It's not the knowledge itself that's nerdy, but pointless knowledge, especially an overemphasis on pointless knowledge. The obsession of it is what makes it nerdy. Like just about everyone doesn't mind watching a Star Wars movie every once in a rare while, but it's when you become a Star Wars fan, attend conventions, etc, that it becomes nerdy. Same thing with stuff that is designed to be cool like metal music. Danzig is a pretty cool band, but toss in a Danzig convention and a whole bunch of metal nerds will attend, thus having made metal nerdy.

I tried to convince my high school English teacher to consider including science fiction into the curriculum. It didn't work. There was no Star Wars yet. Comic book stores didn't exist yet or there were very few. There were no personal computers and calculators were just coming on the general market. In college I met guys that built electronic circuits for fun (hence the soldering gun). Oh, yeah, we watched Monty Python all the time and could recite all the skits, and when we got Mine Sweeper, I probably played for 6 months straight. First fanny packs were cool but then they became uncool, only nerds kept wearing them. If you wore pocket protectors you were a nerd. A/V club was the predecessor of the Computer Club, and Glee Club, in high school at least, meant singing music no one else wanted to listen to. The Drama club was actually cool, though. And I knew people later who went to Renaissance Fairs every week.

Buying a bootleg Star Wars movie is the ONLY crime a nerd would commit. Weird Al NAILED every reference here.
@michaelconnor15424 жыл бұрын
What makes that "bootleg" so nerdy, is that it was the Star Wars Christmas Special. For decades, Lucas refused to release it. He was embarrassed that it exist. It can now be watched on KZbin.
