Quick note about Elizabeth's death and the corset: Elizabeth was, for a variety of reasons (most quite sad) famously obsessed with maintaining her appearance. She almost certainly suffered from what we would now understand as an eating disorder. She also was well-known for tightlacing, which is when you tighten a corset as much as possible. Even in the 19th century people understood this was not a healthy thing to do. There were definitely fashionable women who did it occasionally at formal events, but doing it all the time like Elizabeth was actually pretty shocking.

31:43 I would absolutely watch a huggbees video about women that have some kooky association with space. It'd probably be pretty funny. There's a story in the USSR where one of the first women in space didn't tell her mother she was going to space until her mother heard her BEING BROADCAST ON THE RADIO, FROM SPACE. There's also the fact that one woman helped to design the abort system on Saturn V rockets, and also once finished up a series of complex calculations for her job, WHILE IN LABOR WITH HER SON, JACK BLACK. Yes. That Jack Black. There's a surprising number of kooky stories involving women affiliated with space exploration.

Corsets were not generally uncomfortable unless badly tailored. Even women in sports would wear corsets for a very long time. The meme of "corsets = tight and bad because women suffer for men" took off in modern times.

I mean they were primitive bras, as a bra wearer they can be uncomfortable but not life threatening for daily use.
@Popthebop
@Popthebop Жыл бұрын
Ye, as explained by some people. It was only like a sometimes thing where people would actually tie them up so tight they’d crush your ribs. Most people just put them on comfortably, like I’ve seen like farm hands and working women in like SUPER OLD photos with corsets and they don’t look like they are dead lol. It’s kinda the same thing as sometimes people put on clothes 2 sizes too small for that “look” but it’s really really uncomfortable and crushes your lungs, also funny enough. In an opposite way trans people use binders to hide their breasts, but like all things if not worn properly or taken enough time of rest in between use can crush your ribs and give you breathing problems lol. It’s kinda been a problem forEVER. Like wearing a tight corset I think the best modern equivalent would be like a really really small bra. Which people do occasionally (trans people, and other people who I guess like pain?? Listen I do know of people who have actually done that, but I sadly don’t have any references rn.) do. So idk, when I heard about corsets the first couple of times I was like “oh no! Scary death things” then I learned that “oh wait what they were literally just bras?” And “ohh, people in the old days sometimes had pretty severe body dysmorphia and used to hurt themselves in a self harmish way to make themselves feel better but were probably suffering from some sorta eating disorder or body dysmorphia.” Like modern times. Sometimes things never change :P Idk that’s just my weird thoughts on it, I’m open to hearing about what you think. Hope you have a wonderful day!

@@SofaKingShitintentionally taking the piss are we? even if self harm WASNT a super common coping mechanism for people who suffer from various mental ailments, trans people without access to information about gender affirming care often do hurt themselves accidentally while trying to ease the dysmorphia and simply deal with it because the pain is less than the comfort they gain. hope you enjoyed this free trial of critical thinking.

I just want to take a moment to point out that while sitting too much can be bad if you're not sitting right, standing can be worse even if you're standing right. Humans aren't horses. Ideally you want to be walking or something, but if you're standing too long without significant leg movement, you're actually doing more harm than good. The cardiovascular system is strong, but making it work unassisted against the full force of gravity for hours on end is a lot of stress on it, and not a healthy kind either.

Hey huggbees!! I love what you do and I appreciate all the times you've made me laugh! However there's somethings I'd like to point out about one of the last deaths in this video. The corset as a whole has a lot of misconceptions due to media, misogyny, and shock factor that everyone chases. I highly recommend checking out historical fashion experts like Bernadette Banner, other enthusiasts like Karolina Zebrowska, and the folks they often associate with who have varying degrees of merit in the field I ain't mad or nothin cause plenty of people think these incorrect things about corsetry, but as historical fashion world wide is a passion of mine, its important to me that people of the past are fairly represented. As for the death of that lady, my best uneducated guess as to why she didn't notice sooner was perhaps her body went into shock, which can happen even if you don't know you got injured 😂

Hey Huggbees, if you're looking for strange deaths and such I'd recommend the books "Quackery: A History Of The Worst Ways To Cure Everything" along with "The Victorian Book Of The Dead" and "The Mystery Of The Exploding Teeth", these are all goldmines for that sort of content

You not being funny is impossible, my friend. I like your new sunglasses and if that was really you shredding in the background during the Ad read, rock the fuck on! 👩🏾‍🎤 I actually recognized a couple of the deaths explained in this episode but I didn't know the names attached to them so that made me happy in a grim way. And honestly? I was expecting the first car accident victim to have been "accidentally" pushed into the path of the vehicle by her family who had to be beyond sick of her but the truth was even better. It gave me major Monty Python vibes. I also really enjoyed the meteorite story and the whale bone one even though I was wincing the whole time. I was expecting you to talk about the kink attached to that sort of behavior but learning about a still used medical treatment was pretty neat, too. I'm looking forward to Part 6. I might make a Bingo card to follow along.

On a similar note to the "Pompey" joke, former Vice President of the United States Nelson Rockefeller died in a similar situation: heart attack while having an affair. The notable part, however, is that New York Magazine commented on the incident "Nelson thought he was coming, but he was going."

I wish you hadn’t mentioned your height during this video. I am 6’8,” and though I always saw you as a larger man, it only makes me feel so much smaller. You have a positively commanding presence, great tone, thoughtful insight, and it makes me respect you more for the idea of shaking your hand and looking you in the eye without having to “bow” to you like the rest of the people I may otherwise respect. Good stuff 👍
