This was a total gas, Manu! I wasn't familiar with any of these usages before. But "Le Smoking" is, famously, a women's tuxedo designed in the Sixties, by Yves Saint Laurent, that revolutionized fashion. So much fun to learn about expressions used creatively among different languages! Stammi bene, e grazie molto.

Also, knowing some history helps ---- All Romance languages like French, Italian, Spanish, and more come from Latin. And, Latin, the language was created in what is today called Rome, Italy. Now, Italians, along with Germans, immigrated to Argentina thus bringing their language, culture, and more to Argentina hence the similarity.

Regarding "Slip" having nothing to do with English... I wouldn't count on that. Note the third definition in the noun group at www.lexico.com/definition/slip. "A loose-fitting garment, typically a short petticoat. ‘a silk slip’". So called because it tended to "slip" over the head, I believe. With regard to "Il Box Doccia", I know where that came from; it's from a hotel that I stayed at just outside of Venezia, where the shower was about the size of a cornflakes box and you had to sit on the toilet side saddle. I won't name it because most hotels in Venezia are like that, and it was a nice little hotel regardless.

A slip in the US is an undergarment for women which goes under a dress, so that the dress is not see through. It is shaped like a skirt or dress that is very thin, and usually silky, so the material doesn't get caught on the dress and ride up, underneath. A twin set can mean the same thing in the US, as well, but it can also mean a shirt and pants that come together at the store (like for kids, for example). We also say we have "the feels" (slang), or "feelings" for someone we have chemistry with. We call the things that hit the balls in pinball, "flippers", but not the game, itself. I have only heard, "stage" (French pronunciation) used as an audition work-shift (if longer than a day, possibly a brief internship) for chefs in restaurants, in the US. Otherwise it is, as we use it (English pronunciation), the thing that actors/musicians perform on. Very interesting! Thanks for the video! I like to learn these things, because they are not taught in any of the online content I have come across, so far. Yay! I wrote it all down, of course. I hope you are doing well!

@marcomagandrei

It must come from smoking jacket. Often Italians leave the adjective and remove the noun (for example they call a skateboard a skate which in English has a different meaning, another example is "body" which they use to mean bodysuit. In English the "suit" part is the important part.) Anyway a smoking jacket is slightly different from a tux but I guess that's where it came from.

They really were pretty weird! :)) and I only knew "Stage" ! For 'Smoking', I guessed it may mean 'Smoking Hot'! :D Something like : "Let's go jogging (Footing) to turn smokin' hot!" Thanks for another great video Manu!

In inglese, o piuttosto in americano, c'era lo smoking jacket, cioè la giacca da fumo, che gli uomini indossarono dopo la cena per proteggere i loro vestiti prima di andare in un'altra camera a fumare. Questa giacca è diventata lo 'smoking' di oggi. In inglese è un 'tux'.

Many of these I knew from Portuguese (footing, smoking, stage etc). Just one phrase that I would disagree with you on. "Twin Set" is not used erroneously in Italian. It has the exact same meaning in English - a two piece top, generally a fine knit. One is sleeveless, the other has sleeves.

Hi Manu, I hope it’s ok with you - I just wanted to share with everyone a KZbin channel by KYLIE FLAVELL. Her videos are a mix of Italian and English language. She is a journalist &has filmed in Italy, Sicily, Aeolian Islands and the videos are truly beautiful and fascinating, with lovely interviews giving insight into Italian culture ( I think they are wonderful complement to Italian language studies).

In catalano usiamo anche molte di queste parole pseudoinglesi, ma a volte le scriviamo alla catalana: esmòquing, fúting... Diciamo anche "pàrquing" (parcheggio). Non so come sono entrate nella lingua.
