I've heard a lot of Tom on Joolz's films. I'm 65 & from the US and I'm familiar with a lot of the songs sung, more so than most my age because of being a fan of music from the teens to the 50s. (This year, I don't want to have no one not drinking.)

In the 1939 film Wizard of OZ, the actor who played the wizard wore an 1890s suit coat which belonged to L Frank Baum! A happy accident from a wardrobe mistress who was an inveterate thrift shop patron in Los Angeles. (The tailor's label said it was made for Baum.)
@WeirdSide4 жыл бұрын
wow, how did you know that?
@vilstef69884 жыл бұрын
@@WeirdSide I'm pretty sure I got it out of a book by a movie critic, most probably Roger Ebert or Leonard Maltin. Victor Fleming initially wanted W. C. Fields for the wizard, but couldn't get him either because they wouldn't meet his salary or his studio wouldn't loan him to MGM. One of the great casting misopportunities!

Tom needs to go into the Spike Jones tradition. Wear a suit so loud a deaf man can hear it!
@WeirdSide5 жыл бұрын
I dunno, his suits are already pretty loud
@vilstef69885 жыл бұрын
Take a look at some Spike Jones vids on KZbin. They videos are B&W but the suits are patterned so wildly you know they would be like a neon sign if the films were in color. Compared to US Vaudeville players and Musicians, Tom is dressed tastefully and conservatively.

I don't know if anyones noticed ... I mean, don't get me wrong, he does a pretty good job of the singalong ... but, has anyone noticed that neither the singer, his friends, or most of the crowd, are actually cockneys. In fact, they're what real cockneys would probably call toffs. Public school boys, playing at being cockneys. How do I know ? I went to an English public school ... cringe. Wanna know the worst bit ? I spent forty years pretending to be a skinhead. Now I hide under mushrooms in the New Zealand rainforest, pretendin' not to be nuffing no more.
@WeirdSide5 жыл бұрын
yes I did notice that, but I think the cockney singalong is just a fun catchy name he uses. The music hall style wasn't just a working class phenomenon, they had some pretty extravagant venues and performances for the upperclasses too!
@WeirdSide5 жыл бұрын
Steve Reekie that being said, I would not describe Tom as upperclass
@freebornjohn68765 жыл бұрын
I don't think Tom is pretending to be a Cockney at all. He's what you would call a Chap.

@@freebornjohn6876 I think Steve was getting at the fact he calls the show a cockney singalong
@NewZealandWild5 жыл бұрын
@@freebornjohn6876 Yes, and I must say, he does seem rather a nice chap. In fact, everyone there seems nice. Although I went to a posh(ish) school, I spent quite a bit of time in my youth in the East End, as my parents were both born in East Ham, and I often used to stay with my grand parents there in the 1960's and early 70's. I remember some jolly good singalongs, especially, one on a Christmas eve at Auntie Nan and Uncle Georges. I have to say, I reckon Cathrine Tate is brill too, with her character, Nan. Takes me right back that does.
