1) Growing up, as a girl, me and my sisters were expected to be mature and know how to clean and cook. Whereas I'm pretty sure they were wiping my brothers' asses until they were like 18. 2) I think this is a mix of my family being immigrants but also growing up very poor. If you left food on your plate, your shower was too long, or you left a light or the t.v. on...you knew there was about to be a lecture. 3) Similarly, with them growling up very poor, if we complained about ANYTHING, we would get a speech. "Oooh, you don't want to do the dishes? Well when I was your age..."
@etegenetemengistu49277 жыл бұрын
Tiffany Ramirez Same,If I was I a car ride with my parents I could feel a lecture coming in about anything.I wouldn’t even have to be talking and they would bring it up somehow.And I know that since my parents are immigrants they’re not that fluent in English so babe miss understand a lot of what I say when I speak English and they take in the wrong way and give off lectures on that. I can be talking about rainbows for example and they’ll somehow get it back to my grades and education

Wow, I mean, the no moving in with your boyfriend one is understandable, I would like for marriage to be sorta special, like, I've lived alone for all these years and now I'm married. And sleeping in the same room as your boyfriend is odd, and probably awkward, because you could break up one day and you'd both be living together, so one of you would have to move out.. @avam32457 жыл бұрын
Yeah, a lot of parents do this, I grew up with super chill parents, I mean, we had to clean a lot, and it wasn't like, child labor or anything, it was like, clean the dishes, make your bed and clean your room, when people come over, we all ran around the house, mopping floors and picking up things, making sure everything was all good. I had several friends though that couldn't come over to hangout or play or whatever, because their parents wouldn't let them, they all turned out decent, but they try to be "Bad", which is like, drawing with the other half of the crayon or whatever.

This stuff makes me angry. There are a lot of positive values in other cultures but why do some immigrant parents think depriving their kids of rites of passage in a country THEY chose to come to is the right thing to do?
@bigchungus9206 жыл бұрын
AlJalandhari it's spelled "right" and parents only do it to protect their kids and keeping them away from trouble, they aren't doing it to be mean. I'm thirteen and my parents have a hard time letting me go run around the block. Yes just around the block. I don't get mad though because I know it's to keep me safe. I could get kidnapped, raped, hit by a car, or get jumped.
@TheHawki2356 жыл бұрын
'Rite' Is actually correct in this instance! Some of these are a little silly like school clubs and sleepovers to be fair. But parents just want to protect their children so i get it.

Am I the only person that can’t relate at all? I immigrated from China where households are usually quite strict, but it wasn’t for me. Sleepovers were fine so long as I gave them the contact details of my friends. Grades didn’t matter as long as I tried. I could wear whatever as long as it wasn’t overly inappropriate. Parents never came into my room without knocking so doing my bed wasn’t necessary. No curfew as long as they could come pick me up or I stay at a friend’s house. My parents made it very evident that they trusted and respected me as an equal, so it was not necessary to restrict me. As long as I showed them the same respect and honesty that I was afforded, it was fine. I don’t think this is necessarily a wholistic representation of all immigrant parents.

My mom doesn't have very strict rules too. These are some of the main ones. 1. My mom wanted A&B. If I had a C in science she wouldn't be mad since she knows I'm not good at it. 2. Sleep overs meant I had to do something like buy the groceries. Easy. 3. Halloween meant we had a party,a block party. 4. Clothes,as long as it wasn't too inappropriate. 5. If my older friends could drive, I could be with them. As long if my mom knew them and trusted them. (Their 16, I'm 14) 6. Curfew. Be home by around 8:30 pm - 8:50 pm. My mom isn't too strict. Mostly because she isn't home much and is mostly busy. My mom is a Latina. She immirgranted when she was in her 20's.

I wasn't allowed to go to Birthday Parties or any other parties of any sort or anyone's house for that matter because they always assumed that everyone was going to be drinking alcohol,doing drugs or having sex

Steffy Henry Albert what if you were 8 and your friend was turning 8? Why tf would 8 year olds do drugs and have sex?

I relate, I can’t: Have a sleepover at someone else’s house Go on a date until I’m married (don’t ask lol) Leave the house (aka live in a dorm or live with friends or that kinda stuff) until I’m married Wear revealing clothing (tank tops, short shorts, backless dresses ect.)

mel c I had something sort of similar to this. When I was 17 I went to a teenage support group called Skad every Thursday. My parents didn’t believe me and just thought I was going downtown to “do drugs” so I had to stop going 🙄
