I’m Colombian, and I liked this video! It was so funny for me to see what things from my culture you considered “weird”. I agree with the spontaneous part haha, we really don’t plan things ahead like you guys would; it’s happened to me quite often that we plan something weeks ahead and when the day comes, nobody even talks about the thing and everyone just continues with their lives. It can be really annoying sometimes haha. I also laughed out loud when you mentioned the counting with the hands thing HAHHA. Even before you demonstrated how we counted here, I started counting with my hands to see how I did it and it was the exact same as you were showing, hilarious! This video was so insightful and this series really helps me not to only be more aware of the not so positive traits of my culture and try to fix them in myself, but also to learn from other cultures (in this case, your culture). Thanks and much love from Pereira! ❤️

Thanks so much for your lovely comment! I'm glad I was able to make you laugh LOL. I actually don't think those are "bad traits", more unusual, or something one has to get used to. We love Colombia and couldn't even imagine going back to Switzerland. There are still sooo many things we have to learn from this beautiful country. Let's learn from each other ;-) Have a wonderful day!

@@HowToExpat thanks for the lovely video and all the important info you put out here for other people to fall in love with this country! And I gotcha ;) I truly understand why you see these cultural traits as weird, it would be the same for me and another totally different culture than mine. We all need to get used to different things when we move abroad ❤️.

I'm colombian and I agree with you. People of Santander where I live from. We are straightforward for everything. I prefer honesty. And we are perceived as "rude" for most Colombians. However it is not true. We are very friendly. Some people love to talk a lot to just say a few things. But here we prefer to say things directly. Maybe because there was german immigration in the past. Greetings from Bucaramanga, Santander! Colombia.

Very interesting topic! We really enjoyed it, so Please make Part 3 :) . We count like them, and when we ask somebody to come we use same thing like Colombians. Some times, consider rude, and it depends on the situation. In America usually people ask somebody to come by the index finger , and in my culture consider insulting.

06:26 yeah, In mexico too. Whatsapp is a big thing. I personally don't like using it because HELLO, there are SMS messages and wait wait... CALLS haha I only use whatsapp for work and to talk to people who live in another country. When girls or friends send me something on whatsapp I just ignore them and reply with a SMS. Asi they get used to me not using whatsapp. Again, it's important to be yourself, the culture is the culture but you dont have to be like everyone, it's better to be yourself even if they think you're weird but who cares, when your happiness is at stake right?

trust me, I went I to Oaxaca and puebla, mexico last year. And I saw more street dogs than here and in worst conditions. Those dogs I saw there were more skinny and in a really bad way. In Colombia you'll find a vet shop or vet clinic in every neighborhood or corner of every city or town. Something like that I did not see in Mexico. And streets dogs are better fed here. Most of people usually left food for street dogs or cats. Or most people take care of them somehow. Some dogs are used to live on streets and it is really hard for some of them to be adopted. So even if they live on streets. They don't even look like the ones in Mexico. Some of them would be a little bit skinny, But in general they are taken care for everyone. We loves dogs and cats. We love animals in general. My heart was broken for seeing so many street dogs in bad conditions in Mexico. Something that it doesn't happen here. There's massive campaigns to vaccinate and prevent cats and dogs having more baby's with surgiries. Local governments are concern and they take action about it. However we need to improve shelters for dogs and cats. Sometimes it is not enough. We are more aware about taking care of animals than mexicans based on my own experience traveling. At least where I live from it is just that way. Bucaramanga, Santander. You are welcome to visit Colombia when you wish it. Take care!

I've found out years ago WhatsApp is a big thing in Asia as well. I've spent a lot of time in Indonesia and my friends there always communicate via WhatsApp. Oddly, people in Colombia were surprised I had WhatsApp. Also the finger counting, europeans start with the thumb, Americans start with the fingers and the thumb is 5 only in the same direction as europeans. # FunFact Also with directness it will offend most people, directness is not valued at all in south america, I don't feel any problem adapting to the local customs. In the deep south of the US, directness is considered not only rude, but a profound character and personality flaw.

One of the reasons I hated doing business there. Nothing is straightforward. People would agree to work , wouldn't have the slightest clue of how to do it. Set a date and it would never happen. It was actually cheaper for me to get Visas for people to come in a do buildouts. Then when fired , lots of hurt feelings and even attempted vandalism. Don't miss that part of Colombia
