Very good info. I am amazed at how so many people have to be informed that if they want to start a biss. in a different country that you need to have a full understanding of the laws and just how things are done.

In other words, don't come to Colombia to set up a business unless you are rich enough to not actually need the business to survive.

As usual, Sam an informative and helpful video. After listening to you elucidate the pitfalls of starting a business in Colombia, I thought it might make a good sit-com for TV. It would be about the gringo who goes to Colombia to start a business and all the problems he/she comes up against.

Thank you for the great video Sam. Can you talk about your experience in terms of what did you expect about your business and how it worked and where you stand now? After this experience, are you happy that you chose to live and do business in Colombia? What are your plans for the near future? Thanks!

..eish, bro, this year, had one from Colombia, wanted to come to South - Africa, to me..apparently, wow, Colombians, are cunning, no offense, though I am South African streetwise, but that mister, something else...but I love him, shame... ..but glad I could help him, glad I could, which I indeed do for him..still have contact with him, he still wants to come.. but... ..also sensed, very hard for young people to get a job, make a living, I will gladly take him, his 21 years old, live in Bogota, and have lots of potential..immense. ..thank's, you are informative, regarding your country..keep well, be safe...

what about a consultancy for the city of Medellín, ProMedellín; you help with export/import/foreign investments in Medellín, contacts, speak good paisa Casrellano and good English and Sedish/Danish, in an area full of univeristies and high tech companies. Become an agent for Alcadía de Mdellín or Empreas Publicos de Medellåin, ; negociate a fixed salary + expenses and a bonus when you accomplish something; a new export or import of important herramientas, tech, knowledge, or making aknowledge-based company start up a filial in Medellín, wanting like 100 people with good university and (some or them at least, good English). I Buenos Aires my friend was working for a French major pharam compay and one day a week was English, so she worked 4 days and the company , even a French one in San Isidro, Bs As, Needed, this was 2006, English speaking personell. I mean REAL ENGLISH!! Since noby here speaks Spanish AND are an master in qemistry etc, you can look up people, since you know what is missing, why the trade deals and investments are so small in comparison to it´s potential...You can also add culural inctercambios, of art exhibuitions etc. City of Medellåin pays you 5 m COP/ month /30% income tax + expenses...+ bonus when getting a deal done, which can be very good money if you for example get 100 high tech job in Medellín...etc, or exports worth XY- Millions, billions a year to my region, agriculture products, but also importing technology and know-how persons etc...That would be my dream-job, no worries about your monthly income, but chance to get high bonueses + doing a good thing for Medellín is so are so filled with educated young people that want the city to be like a Colombian Barcelona....

The problem isn't with Colombia. The problem is when people show up in a country with a poor (or no) business plan, no understanding of the laws and business practices there, no understanding of the culture and to top it off, don't even speak the language. How can anyone possibly expect to be successful in that situation? Sure, blame that on Colombia, why on earth would you place the blame where it belongs, which on your shoulders. Learn the language and/or partner with someone you can trust, hire an attorney and an accountant, and most importantly, develop a business plan and think it through. Nearly half or more of small business fail in the US for the exact same reason, poor planning and not understanding how to run a business. Being successful in another country will be twice as hard.

Colombia is a different beast. It takes forever to do the simplest thing that has to do with the government. Things will sit on someone’s desk for months before they process it and by that time everything has expired. It’s not as straightforward as in other countries
