Weird USSR Trumpet

I bought this broken trumpet off eBay for about $15, and did some basic repair work in order to bring you this video. I've got one more odd USSR instrument on the way for your delectation. Hope you enjoy!

Russian form of quality isn't what we think of, which is something that's extremely well made and will last a long time. The Russian idea of quality is something fairly cheap and very easy to repair.

i have a soviet made trombone that has been fixed (un dented) and new parts like a tuning slide have been replaced and it still leaks air

Oh the things we brass players have to overcome. You get a beautiful tone and actually at the end your articulation is decent. Soviet design is interesting, in that they can't rely on craftsmanship. The design has to be simple, any complications will be totally mucked up in production. In order to be effective, it has to be capable of being constructed by a hung over Moskovite on a Monday morning. I.E. the Mosin Nagant, and AK 47.

When I started playing trumpet back in 1993 I played one of these! Or something very similar. I've changed quite a few rotary trumpets in my first years on trumpet and most of them sounded as we say in Russian "like a night pot"... Partially maybe because I wasn't any good player yet :D When I got an old German piston valves B&S it was like a blessing! A few years later I got a 4335 Yamaha and that felt almost like driving a Mercedes after a Bajaj.. After I finished school I had to give the Yamaha back and return to the B&S. What was blessing once felt really bad now, also there were air leaks. So one can imagine how bad my first trumpets were.. Because of that most Soviet trumpet players had prejudice against rotary trumpets. For example, I was very surprised to find out that nowadays rotary trumpets are often more expensive than piston

I hope none of your Wall Of Stuff fell down in the earthquake, and that everything else remains well with you. Idea for this trumpet should you be unable to get the third valve working well: put it in the "down" position and lock it that way, and pretend it's a two-valve G bugle.

We live in earthquake country too, and this is why we have strings across the front of our pantry shelves, about an inch and a half up (4 cm) from the edge. Things tend to vibrate to the edge because shelves do sag whether you can see it or not, but the string is enough to keep them from toppling over while not interfering (much) with normal use. Glad to hear that's the extent of the damage though. It could have been much worse.

There must be a more than a million horns out there, that need repair, I bought a "Henri Gautier Virtuoso" silver plated trumpet, for $21.00......after a few minor repairs, it plays wonderfully, warm tone. What a bargin!!

@@youldhead4017 same story!! I played Amati for a year! There came a HUGE case with it. Like a proper travelling case. The valves were bad, the sound compare to Yamaha was poor. Funny that nowadays cheapest Chinese trumpets are better than most of those trumpets that we had in USSR..

Great video, interesting instrument! but one thing about the rotary valves: i think i have almost never seen an instrument with rotary valves, where all valves move in the same direction. Most of the rotary-valve trumpets, tubas, tenorhorns (in germany at least) have one valve, that turns in the opposite direction. And it works very well!

The rotors fit so loosely that there is poor compression. That is why the pitch is so unstable. These rotors were meant to be sealed with heavy oil, like 3-in-1 or motor oil. In order to apply such oil, you have to remove the rotors from their cylinders. This is also true of better-made German rotors of the period ca. 1900. Once you seal these rotors with heavy oil, the trumpet will play much better.

Love your videos, I've spent an entire evening looking at them. I know you're not interested in polishing a turd, but it sounds to me like both the 1st and 2nd valves are a little flat. Perhaps they need a millimeter or two of tubing shaved off. I'd be interested in knowing if you decide to check it with a strobe whether I was right or not! Keep up the good work.

Local tuba dealer started selling Russian tubas shortly after the USSR broke up. Valve quality was horrible, so the dealer sent them a German valve set. The Russian guy sent back a set that was perfect, and these horns are now huge sellers. No incentive in the Soviet days to produce quality. Money talks!

russian/ ex ussr country instruments are always really odd, i have a tuba that was made in east germany and it is very strange. It was built for easy repair, screws/ clamps instead of sodder on basically every normal sodder point, plays closer to a sousaphone than a standard tuba. Breaks occur a bit more often but original parts are fairly cheap I would highly recommend

I've picked up two Soviet Era trumpets off of ebay.One is a "Leningrad".I had to transliterate the Cyrillic characters.Its in relatively nice shape;I've played it and it seems to play in tune.This one has piston valves.It came with the stock mouthpiece,but I use my Rudy Muck 17C.The other is either nickel or silver plate and was in horrible shape.I ended up removing the dents and creases from the bell as best I could with a ball peen hammer.The valves are badly worn on it.I've yet to play it.

Flat unmodulated pitch is artificial sounding and accompanies tense playing. Besides, a synthesizer is much better at it.

Hello Mr. Hamilton, Im in the process of repairing an old cornet I bought off of ebay, which requires a bit of solder work. So I tried using a propane torch, but it seems too hot. (The copper starts glowing red hot, and the flame starts turning green, which could indicate burning copper.) So what soldering torch do you use? Also, do you have any additional tips for soldering work?

Hi Nathan, I'm going to be putting up a video about this topic in the next few months, but basically: 1: clean the metal thoroughly. 2: put flux on the parts of the metal you want to solder. 3: heat the metal enough so that solder melts on contact, but not too hot. 3: press solder on to the parts you want, the heat of the metal should melt the solder, and the flux will help it flow.

Keep in mind all of your old used instruments have several DPO Dreaded Previous Owners each starting with zero knowledge of the instrument. My guess is YOU can fix the too high tension yourself easily. The different key heights may be related, or may require 3 new springs. I posted 2 near identical shorts with information as first comment. Both titles are: ClockSpring DrumSpring This is the end piece of the information: Drum Spring Setup (Drum Springs slip over square shaft) So many of 1/4 turns from no tension on shaft to have sufficient force to close valves as desired, but not so much they are difficult to press. I could measure distance and pressure for each of 4 instruments I have that use drum springs. Before I work on any of them.

Hi Trent, I was wondering if you have ever played a Schiller/JinBao euphonium before. If so, any thoughts about how it played?

I have one exactly like it. IF I could fix the leaks, it would play better. I had to trim the cork stops for the levers because it was partially venting. Valve action is very stiff. You have to slam the levers or you'd partially vent. I have a 4 valve rotary flugalhorn with 4 valve putting it in either A or Bb. It is Swiss design.

I know this doesnt particularly relate to this video but what mouthpiece do you prefer for trumpet. I am in highschool and I own 2 mouth pieces a Vincent Bach 5C and a B&S 1.5C. I prefer to play with the 1.5 because it is easier to play higher and lower notes. I am looking for your opinion just for referance. Thanks!

I'm a euphonium player and I was wondering, how did you work on your range? I have an audition coming up and I have to hit a G (I think) which is 4 lines above the staff. What kind of exercises did you do while playing to get to those notes?

looking for some advice. I have a Bach tr300. and the first valve is very sticking and even grindy sounding, the others move but not as well as they should. I cleaned and washed it out twice now, and tried using two different types of valve oil. I'm thinking there is a bigger issue. any ideas ?

@@yeezet4592 string instruments are a completely different beast than wind instruments and if you have a good string instrument it will actually get more expensive as time goes on the typical example is the stradivarius violin which can typically go for more than 8 million dollars

It looks like that took a bugle, cut a section out, and threw in three rotary valves. I bet that is the reason for the long lead pipe.
