"Weird Western" is a genre like steampunk was (and it's kind of in the same wheelhouse): It's been around for decades in literature, indie comics, TTRPGs, and other media with lower barriers to entry, but every once in a while they push out a big project in a more prominent audio-visual medium, hoping for a mainstream breakthrough that will probably never come.

I've had this long standing suspicion that Yahtzee is a secret weeb. One of those people deeply in love with all of that stuff but unlike a typical weeb has the self awareness to be deeply ashamed, so conceals it. The hatred he expresses of that stuff is to conceal the self loathing he experiences when he really enjoys all those things he mocks, and that he gets off on the self pain... which also helps fuel the bile he can throw at everything else.... just a theory mind you. More seriously though, one thing I do not get is that Yahtzee has pointed out a couple of times that there is some stuff in anime that he likes, mostly because it's not like most of the other anime due to avoiding a lot of the usual recycled tropes and satire through Japanese humor. He clearly knows "Anime" is pretty diverse and I'm never entirely clear why he never tracked down any of the more serious "hard sci-fi/fantasy" stuff that was fairly common in like the 90s and early 2000s and keeps looking at well... weeb stuff. The stuff that also got me out of anime. I mean I'd think he'd probably appreciate the 90s Berserk, maybe even the manga given that he likes things like Dark Souls and I've long felt Berserk had some influence on that. Ghost In The Shell: SAC is another one that occurred to me doesn't have any of the crap he hates in it. That said it would be funny if Kentaro Miura rose from the grave just to insert a few hot springs chapters/episodes into berserk with magical ghost powers just because Yahtzee decided to give that a chance because of the Dark Souls thing. I mean can you imagine Guts in a hot springs episode? Where does he put his sword when he changes into a swimsuit even, I doubt there is a locker big enough. Or does he crouch in the water with the sword next to him in a macho pose and glare at everyone while Casca's comatose body floats in the women's pool behind the room screen and he grows increasingly angsty and depressed and wonders how the hell this could even be a thing much like the fans. :)
@jbaby3622 жыл бұрын
It's really cool when Yahtzee reviews a game that he's nitpicking because he enjoyed a base part of it, like it inspires a hope that maybe there will be a sequel that addresses those sort of nitpicks and is good. Fingers crossed

It's not that you shouldn't listen to weebs, you just need either to build up the same tolerance to anime bullshit as them or find the weebs that are self-aware of their tolerance levels to recommend stuff not drenched in it. First, a bit of trivia: H.P. Lovecraft enjoyed travel and going to the movies. He went to Quebec in Canada and to Key West, Florida, among other places. That said, he had no interest in Westerns as a genre. After all, he could only write "weird fiction", as he put it. Now, on to the meat of the matter. First off, there _is_ a reason for the set characters, but it's an in-story reason. Same for the questionnaire. So I can't really explain much without spoiling a lot. As for money? Well, the horse is vital, but money is also used to buy tools, crafting materials, storage, hirelings and healing, so it's still a good idea to get some. Putting points into Abilities is good as well, giving you more bang for your buck in fights. (There's even an improved version of bullet time... for one character.) Oh, and there have been two patches. YMMV on whether they fixed the chair.
