"Weird Western" is a genre like steampunk was (and it's kind of in the same wheelhouse): It's been around for decades in literature, indie comics, TTRPGs, and other media with lower barriers to entry, but every once in a while they push out a big project in a more prominent audio-visual medium, hoping for a mainstream breakthrough that will probably never come.

I've had this long standing suspicion that Yahtzee is a secret weeb. One of those people deeply in love with all of that stuff but unlike a typical weeb has the self awareness to be deeply ashamed, so conceals it. The hatred he expresses of that stuff is to conceal the self loathing he experiences when he really enjoys all those things he mocks, and that he gets off on the self pain... which also helps fuel the bile he can throw at everything else.... just a theory mind you. More seriously though, one thing I do not get is that Yahtzee has pointed out a couple of times that there is some stuff in anime that he likes, mostly because it's not like most of the other anime due to avoiding a lot of the usual recycled tropes and satire through Japanese humor. He clearly knows "Anime" is pretty diverse and I'm never entirely clear why he never tracked down any of the more serious "hard sci-fi/fantasy" stuff that was fairly common in like the 90s and early 2000s and keeps looking at well... weeb stuff. The stuff that also got me out of anime. I mean I'd think he'd probably appreciate the 90s Berserk, maybe even the manga given that he likes things like Dark Souls and I've long felt Berserk had some influence on that. Ghost In The Shell: SAC is another one that occurred to me doesn't have any of the crap he hates in it. That said it would be funny if Kentaro Miura rose from the grave just to insert a few hot springs chapters/episodes into berserk with magical ghost powers just because Yahtzee decided to give that a chance because of the Dark Souls thing. I mean can you imagine Guts in a hot springs episode? Where does he put his sword when he changes into a swimsuit even, I doubt there is a locker big enough. Or does he crouch in the water with the sword next to him in a macho pose and glare at everyone while Casca's comatose body floats in the women's pool behind the room screen and he grows increasingly angsty and depressed and wonders how the hell this could even be a thing much like the fans. :)

It's not that you shouldn't listen to weebs, you just need either to build up the same tolerance to anime bullshit as them or find the weebs that are self-aware of their tolerance levels to recommend stuff not drenched in it. It's like going to a random career pot-heads house and taking the full slice of brownie he gives you without first establishing that he isn't giving you his "only slightly high" dose which will leave you in a catatonic state for a week.

Really interesting setting, and it was cool seeing how some of the choices you made as previous characters changed the world state when you started the next one. Certain towns might become abandoned, or people show up as bounties in the next playthrough etc. Definitely glad the last couple characters cut down on the side quests, because they figured by then you were more interested in the main story and such.

I half expected that Yahtzee wouldn't like Rune Factory. He might prefer Gleaner Heights instead, but since it's a few years old now it probably wouldn't be reviewed on here unless new game releases slow to a crawl. It's basically Harvest Moon meets Twin Peaks. Some people hate the more realistic elements of that game (like how the seeds for your crops can be washed away by the rain) so I make no promises on whether he'd like it or not!

First, a bit of trivia: H.P. Lovecraft enjoyed travel and going to the movies. He went to Quebec in Canada and to Key West, Florida, among other places. That said, he had no interest in Westerns as a genre. After all, he could only write "weird fiction", as he put it. Now, on to the meat of the matter. First off, there _is_ a reason for the set characters, but it's an in-story reason. Same for the questionnaire. So I can't really explain much without spoiling a lot. As for money? Well, the horse is vital, but money is also used to buy tools, crafting materials, storage, hirelings and healing, so it's still a good idea to get some. Putting points into Abilities is good as well, giving you more bang for your buck in fights. (There's even an improved version of bullet time... for one character.) Oh, and there have been two patches. YMMV on whether they fixed the chair.

So Yahtzee's playing as Mr. Bean in Elden Ring. I wonder what's kicking his ass at this point.

There was a game called Hard West which is, like, almost the same as Weird West but came in 2015

Sounds like the tabletop RPG Savage Worlds. The Adventure is Nigh gang might enjoy doing a one shot in that world, it’s pretty fun

Yahtzee should play "West of Loathing" and perhaps compare it to "Weird West".

It's funny that he pointed out the stealth rifle shot as being worthless because that has so far felt like the most OP skill I've used. I can one shot anything while staying stealthed for one bar? Aight. Leave the body in plain sight and silent snipe the next guy to check it out.

I wish it leaned more into CRPG territory (Wild west + supernatural occult shit + DOS2 would have been amazing) but it still seems like a good time. I don't see this as "Lovecraftian" at all, though. That description is thrown around way too much.

I like how he makes fun of the single silent shot perk while that was the very first one I picked. Turn my gun into a silenced sniper rifle (even if briefly)? Yes please, I've played Far Cry.

Hit the nails on their heads. They really billed this up as a Immersive Sim type game but in the end all I got was a fun action RPG sorta game where most of the systems felt pointless. Meanwhile Blood West actually nails it's fan tagline of "S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Weird West" in that combat IS punishing but fulfilling, for that I think THAT will be the winner between the "Weird West genre" games.

So long as it's not Discovery or Picard based. Angry Joe and every other TNG era Trek fan would rather eat Gaak marinated in Ferengi snail juice than play it.

Wait serious question; do Aussies/ non Americans not differentiate between "Wild-West" cowboy type accents and Southern drawls? He mentioned a man with a Southern drawl as well as Dukes of Hazzard when talking about a dry, western setting and that caught my attention, being from the South.

Several different characters over the course of a Lovecraftian game with limited individual development of each character? That's Eternal Darkness. Though magical development is consistent through all the characters in ED because of the effects of finding the Tome of Eternal Darkness at the beginning of each chapter. And the overall plot has far more scope.
