When a series is about to go bye-bye, the company that makes it may pull out of the stops in creating one final hurrah to bow out on.
Puyo Puyo Box for the Playstation was like that for Compile. They stuffed as much as they could into this game, and even tried out something especially crazy for a side story...

I've translated Rulue's dialogue as best as I can Rulue: "Oh. Arle." (There's a "janai" at the end there so maybe it's something along the lines of "Oh great...not Arle" Arle: "Ah, Rulue!" Rulue: "What are you doing here?" Arle: "Collecting medals" Arle: "What about you?" Rulue: "A Medal? What's that?" Arle: "Well..." Rulue" ".......How sad. You're wasting your time on such a silly thing." (This I'm not sure of, my japanese isn't too good.) Arle: "But, it's about being happy!" (Again, I'm not sure.) Rulue: "What are you talking about? I've never heard of this." Arle "But...but..." (Sounds like she's trailing off into crying here. No clue what the ぬぬぬ means) Rulue: "Someone..." (Can't translate this one, sorry.) Rulue: "You, are you being tricked by some guy?" Arle: "That's not it at all~ I'm looking perfect medals!" Rulue: "So let me see this medal." Arle: "Here!" Rulue: "I see. I'm sorry." (Light flashes) Rulue: "Hm?! This scent! Arle: "Rulue?" Minotaur: "Miss Rulue...!?" Rulue: "(There's no mistake! This is Satan's scent!)" Rulue: "(This medal...who made it?!)" (I might be a slight bit off here) Rulue: I've anticipated this for 100 years!" (Might be off here too.) Arle: "...anticipated...?" (I don't know what だしぬく/だしぬこう means.) Rulue: "Don't play dumb! The Sega Puyo Puyo games are really good but you can see that the Compile Era had that special charm alongside the Diskstation games and the short animations. I'm glad they could made a game to give it the proper "goodbye".

Gauntlet?)... there was a character, literary called "Succubus". And her character portrait... yes. They sure went in a bang, because they included "everyone", and I mean "everyone".

Usually companies end on a lazy note but some times they put a really nice goodbye game and cease to exist I think Sega did a decent enough job of taking care of the series.

They replaced Arle as head character for awhile, plus the newer games have terrible designs for the characters, I'd venture to say Sega was not the best thing to happen to this series. I wish Compile Heart (which I believe is still around) had the rights back to their series.

Taiko no tatsujin has a quest mode on ds, the third ds game to be exact, and the vita game has a monster hunter-like mode, I don't know how many Taiko games have an rpg mode but it's cool

Have you ever considered playing any of the Madou Monogatari games? That's how Puyo Puyo started. The spin off Puyo Puyo stole the spotlight of a great RPG series.

Games like this paved the road to the realization that RPG elements can be added to any genre, creating the risk of making JRPGs feel obsolete. I particularly enjoyed certain soccer RPGs where you leveled up your team and traveled the world to earn the champion cup from each country before proceeding to the world championship. If you're actually serious about learning Japanese I've recently made a lot of progress into mastering French with Duolingo, and it has Japanese lessons too. It's certainly harder to learn than French but you have to start somewhere.

The Saturn is a coding nightmare in general, it was multi-core CPU before that was a thing, and it shows.

SSF and Retroarch/Mednafen run Saturn games quite well. While SSF seems to have stopped with updates, Retroarch/Mednafen keeps getting updates.

Considering this was a PS1 release, they would not be trying to *emulate* Saturn.... more just porting its features over. That said, one wonders why they couldn't have used the Playstation version of Puyo 2.... I guess that could have just been too recent or they wanted something that was closer to the arcade original (which the Genesis is basically the original arcade but with slight hits to the sound quality and maybe a few extra features).

Hey, I've been trying to learn Japanese to understand non-translated adult doujin (mostly, it's looking up a character and putting it with the other ones (which sucks to do on mobile) to see what the character is saying while sexual stuff happens) and for a Japanese game that no longer has a PC version, so learning it because of a puzzle game wouldn't be that worrisome.

Still not as strange as the RPG in Point Blank series. Imagine an RPG where you had to shoot every spot you wanted your character to walk to on an overworld map; and not just locations. You had to shoot generic patches of grass that had no feature just to get where you wanted to go.

I'd not say the Saturn version of Tsuu is the best, no no. The PS1 and PS2 versions allow you to pick between arcade and remixed music, something the Saturn version does not have an option for. The PS2 version (Sega Ages Puyo Puyo Tsuu Perfect Set, and it is indeed perfect, plus you get a Nazo Mode, pretty much a quest mode just like this game has) is the PS1 version without load times, and higher res sprites, plus having access to the arcade original music instead of remixed music puts it at the top for me (and I own 8 versions of Tsuu, including the one in Box). All versions play identical, but if a version or two allows me to play with the original arcade music, in my eyes that places it as the best version available. As for gameplay and other areas outside of music, the PS1 and Saturn versions are on equal footing.

If you only interested in understanding the dialogue, then it shouldn't be that hard. It's mostly just hiragana with basic kanji, while katakana is barely used. The game seems to be aimed for kids, so it wasn't too hard to understand from what I can see.

I'm super happy that the git is making videos on puyo puyo. It's my favorite puzzle game and I just want to get more videos on the game from it. Schzeo is probably my favorite character in the series though. And apparently 4 is the number of death in Japan and puyo puyo 4 is the last game I think and spelled the end for compile.

Touhou is better by far, but Puyo Puyo as Madou Monogatari (especially the kindergarten one) was an awesome RPG series. Hidden gem. Well, there IS Puyo Puyo Chronicle, which is basically like a 3DS version of Puyo Puyo Box's Quest Mode. Again, its Japan-only, but unlike Puyo Puyo Box, there's an English fan-translation for Puyo Puyo Chronicle. And yes, 3DS emulation exists.

No, at that point Compile still owned the rights to the series, Sega just commisioned them to bring it to western gamers, and added Sonic characters for western players to identify (no one in those days in the west knew who Arle Nadja and crew were). Compile did the same with the SNES version, using Kirny characters instead.
