We have burned wood for over 30 years. We let the wood sit for 1 year before splitting. Its then split using a 34 ton gas powered log splitter, which can be operated horizontally or vertically. We only use a sledge and wedge when cut the trees down or for later downsize some large pieces which are too large to put under the splitter. The largest tree we cut down had a trunk over 4 feet wide. After the wood is split it dries another year before being burned. We keep 3-4 years worth of wood on hand in various stages of completion. I would say the wedge sucks from a engineering standpoint. You want it at smooth and straight as possible to provide the least resistance. Even the 34 ton log splitter will bog down in heavily knotted wood and that is with a much larger smooth wedge. A twisted wedge will only add more resistance.
