I was able to try the incredibly sweet ones, delicious ones at the San Diego Botanic Garden and saved all the seeds. Now I have an army of little Kei Apple seedlings! They supposedly produce in about three years and I can’t wait to select for the best fruit! Those are one of my favorite unusual fruits and I was thrilled to find out the ones I had were notably good ones!

You need female and male plants to produce fruit, so make sure to plant 3 or more to increase your chances of cross pollination.

Weird Explorer It seems like the ones I had were a little sweeter and more “fruity.” They lived up to the comparison of being apricot-like. There was some tartness, but not much; definitely sweeter than any other examples I’ve seen online. From the research I’ve done it seems like the ones at the SD Botanic Garden are particularly tasty. When I initially tried them I was blown away and they became a high scoring fruit in my book which is why I germinated so many seeds!

Our Kei Apple definitely had an Apricot flavour/smell to it. Also, no where near as tart as an Orange. But, it would be grown in a different climate ... we are in Australia.

My father used to grow Kei Apple and Natal Plum under all of our windows. The giant thorns on Kei Apple make it great security. That was his idea ... and I can tell you, you can't get past a Kei Apple hedge.

Im from Kenya and we had those everywhere when I was growing up. We never ate them as we were made to think they were poisonous but the smell they emitted when ripe was too sweet.

Well, people at the tropical fruit forum said that those kei apples at that nursery is a special variety noted for its sweetness. It seems what you tasted isn't really representative of the species. Still interesting though

Just for interest sake: It's spoken like you would the word....'TRY'. The fruit is exceptionally high in Vit C - hence the tartness. You will notice this particularly well in a slightly under ripe fruit - which tastes like an ascorbic acid tablet. The jam/jelly you make from the fruit is very good at cutting the fat when eating lamb.

After checking into it a little more, we’re pretty sure it is a red lime, not a blood lime. It was orange on the outside and light pink inside. Blood limes are green outside and dark red inside. So, red lime it was!

I got played!!! LOL When I was a child I was told that it was a poisonous fruit that only snakes ate. It was used everywhere for fencing and the fruit was just left to fall and rot. SMH!

If you were to eat a pound of semi-ripened apricots, then decided to throw up. The lingering taste from throwing up, with the sweetness of the apricot is what a key apple tastes like. And yes, also vegetable-like taste as well.

Here in Africa we use the kei apple tree as a fence because of it's sharp thorns but the fruit is not edible

I saw them on a university campus in Namibia the other day. There was lots of fruit on the ground because I assume Noone knows what they are here and believe they are not edible. I had to Google what they are on the internet which wasn't easy coz I only had a fruit and I didn't get a great look at the tree. I am definetly going back to the campus to collect them.

greeting from Malaysia. here we near to special manggo season from north part of malaysia. its unique variety of mango called harum manis. gred A can be pricey more than durian! cause that manggo only grow in perlis state near Thailand. there are short lived mango. only available around 2 month april - jun. green outside and bright orange inside with sweet, smooth texture and fragrant too. that is where they got the name. harum (fragrant) manis (sweet). during this season, be careful with fruit scam cause, the mango from thailand look alike and more cheaper than 'original' can be sold as real one with wide variety of price range. last year I bought thai version for Rm8 per kilo while harum manis from perlis price rm40 per kilo. can you belive it??
