James, you are so talented and your understanding and ability to get this all working again is amazing, even without your rebuilding or servicing the clockwork movement. A pleasure to watch you work as well.

I got interested in clocks from watching your channel. So I built a grandfather clock. Lots of mistakes, but I worked through them alright. Thanks for all the info.

Yes, The owner had taken it multiple times to a local clock shop but it would only run for a day until it would lock up again.

These calendar are great when they are adjusted correctly. I have an Ithaca number 10 farmers model and it took my Clock guy two months before he could get it in sync. But it works great now.

This complication is tricky enough to handle for the novice. I admit there have been a couple of times where the extent of the butchery on these extra complications was so widespread that I simply refused to spend time to sort things out. Your mylar trick is just the ticket.

Awesome job correcting the shoddy work done by all the previous butchers. Jake made a mistake by not having you go thru the movement while you had it in your shop. Nice clock though!

Interesting clock. A lot of thought went into that perpetual calendar mechanism.

Would love to see how it compensates for 30 / 31 / 28 days.
@jamesmartin5370 Жыл бұрын
I have worked on many of these over the years and have never found any defect in the calendar mechanism itself. Have never had to dissemble one yet, they were designed well. B. B. Lewis took several patents out on his calendar mechanism, so patent drawings are out there.
@robertjordan7323 Жыл бұрын
That was a very interesting clock. Is it some how designed to know how many days are in each month or do you need to adjust it each month?
@jamesmartin5370 Жыл бұрын
The B. B. Lewis mechanism adjusts automatically, so it is called Perpetual Calendar Clock . If intersted, you can read how it does that in his patent below: patents.google.com/patent/US249536A/en

This was a great video! I was engrossed the whole time 🤓. Now forgive me, because my knowledge lays more with modern watchmaking rather than classical clockmaking, but is it this truly a perpetual calendar in the watchmaking sense? It seems like just a traditional "complete calendar" where it indicates day of the week, date, month, and time, but with no ability to track year, or especially leap years. So if that's the case, you still need to open the door and move the date forward at the end of months with less than 31 days, right? I'm sorry if this reads as pedantic, I'm just curious to make sure I have it all correct. 🙏
@jamesmartin5370 Жыл бұрын
It corrects itself for the months that have different number of days in them as well as Leap years.
@awdturbopowah773 Жыл бұрын
@@jamesmartin5370 Wow, that's amazing. I'd love to get the chance to study one of these up close, how the mechanism works, etc. Thanks for answering my question!
@TheTarrMan Жыл бұрын
Pity the owner wouldn't let you go through the whole clock.
@jamesmartin5370 Жыл бұрын
That's ok. He said with calendar disconnected it was keeping great time. Maybe in the future he will have it gone through.
@bwhogАй бұрын
So... does the perpetual calendar compensate for 30 day months or February? 2:50 These old adhesives are typically natural. These can often be reactivated using heat and steam. Light pressure on the glued surface as it dries will re-engage it. I've used this to reattach cork to the bottoms of old mechanical calculators as a byproduct of cleaning and de-greasing. (Oven drying the wet cork and case.) 13:35 Bet that shim was an attempt to compensate for the fact that the movement was out of position. With it rotated as it was, I'm betting that was the center location. It may actually be that the movement was shifted to try to compensate for other issues, like that extension.
@jamesmartin5370Ай бұрын
They compensate for different days of months as well as leap year.
@theviledelinquent3920 Жыл бұрын
But, how does this clock compensate for months with 30 days and how does it make up for February which only has 28 days (29 on leap years)?
@jamesmartin5370 Жыл бұрын
I have never had to repair any B. B Lewis mechanisms. All I have seen work perfectly. B. B. Lewis explains how his Leap year mechanism works in one of his patents. See Sheet 2 about the 12th paragraph, under his "Description" in below Patent: patents.google.com/patent/US249536A/en
