This is fantastic information. It is easy to pour your heart into something when you truly care about it, and it is clear Henry truly does. The ugly reality is that most big names in gar fishing are harming every fish they hook. Henry is the only one who isnt. That is why this video is worth watching all the way through.

Very much enjoyed your video as it brought back good memories of catching alligator gars 50 years ago. Since their mouths are too boney for hook setting and not wanting to gut hook them, we use make a noose from stainless piano wire which we threaded lengthwise thru the bait. For big gar the noose was around 8” in diameter. After threading the cut end of the wire thru the bait it was bent around through a small loop/eye at the other end. A sharp bend was then made in the wire to made the bait loop the desired size. This bend had to almost double back along the wire to allow the line to be cast out without closing the bait loop. We also fished this with a cork so the baited loop hung down and open. The gar always seemed to take the bait with their snout thru the loop and a hard set closed the loop around their snout with the wire locking down tight over their upper snout and between upper teeth. The release could be made harmless by cutting the wire below the line loop and removing the loop from the gar’s snout. Not as easy as your release method but a good way to avoid harmful hook-up. Using lighter wire and tackle this is also a great way to catch a lot of smaller needle-nose gar. Thoughts???

If you tie a big loop at the end of the leader material, and have the hook on the loop, then you can just cut the loop and pull the leader out, leaving only the hook in the fish.

Small hooks are more effective than people think. I’ve caught many flatheads in the teens on size 10 treble hooks. Great video now I need to gear up for the alligator gar that have been stocked in the rivers in my area.

There's no alligator gar up her in Illinois, but recently I went fishing for shortnose, longnose, and spotted gar using two tiny sharp trebles rigged in tandem like a quick strike rig for pike. It's a pretty good method for setting the hook immediately and hooking the fish in the top jaw. If I ever get down to Louisiana, I'm going to see if a scaled up version will work for alligator gar.

I have been thinking that a book by you would be excellent. Hard copies. If not, here it is! I bit the bullet and ordered some JB hollow core, and finally found some Gama 18411s. I have 2 "stand up" 80's bait runner rigs that were for sailfish and kings. Rigging a kayak and sizing up the Colorado around LaGrange AND an undisclosed La. river. How do I talk to you privately about possibly a trip? and stuff

@@CatchingDinosaurs yt is the extent of my social media by choice. I may try to figure out IG just to talk to you. The JB hollowcore 300lb came today, and that is some tough stuff! I can snell an 18411 1/0 live bait hook with it and it barely fits through the "eye." I had to gnaw on with sharp scissors to cut it! I was gonna try to use "Catahoula" #18 tar-braid that i use for limb lines, but I see what you mean about the texture, and how a gar (etc.) won't know they are chewing a leader. smart

You might be able to fix that line spin up issue with adding shims under the bell. It raises it to center the line better just an idea not sure if you are aware of it or not but it could completely fix that issue if you aren't aware

Thank you for this awesome video. I live in NE Texas. I plan on gar fishing from the bank of the Red river pretty soon. Just need to get some better gear and supplies together. are there any cheaper alternatives to the Jerry brown hollow core that would work just as good. The water i fish in is usually pretty swift. Is this still a good method to use in swift water. Or should I fish on the bottom with bigger weights

Hey man loved the video I learned a lot from it. 1 question I have is how come it’s ok to just cut your liter with the hook on it still in this gar? Wouldn’t that effect them somehow later on or something.
@sammybarreda51883 жыл бұрын
In the gar not this gar is what I meant to put. I ask because I had seen in another one of your videos
@CatchingDinosaurs3 жыл бұрын
Couple things i would rather not leave hooks in gar, that said if it is going to happen using a hook that is too small to puncture the air bladder of a gar is a must, every guide currently is fishing with large trebles and letting them swallow it. Its been studied by TPWD what happens if and when gar get left with hooks basically the hook will either create scar tissue and never move again or the hook creates an abbess that pushes the hook out and the gar can pass it with its waste. because of the way gar feed there is absolutely no way you can be 100% positive they wont eat it the bait/hook in a second flat when they pick it up with that being said having small hooks that cant internally hurt gar is one of the largest changes that can be made by catch and release anglers to protect the fishery. The short answer is no matter what you do you will catch some where they swallowed it even if your setting in 30 seconds into the run, so protect the fish by using the smallest hook possible whenever possible, hope that answers your question
@sammybarreda51883 жыл бұрын
Ok that’s good information to have. I got into gar fishing about a year ago an I’m pretty much hooked on it that’s the only kind of fishing I do now an I’m all about catch an release I definitely try my hardest not to hurt them but that’s easier said than done. So after watching your video I learned a lot an am gonna try out the tackle you used in this video. Thanks a lot

Thoughts on the modified circle hook Method? Seems to always hook in the mouth, avoiding the worries of gut hooking and also gives you the added benefit of increased hook up ratio?
@CatchingDinosaurs7 ай бұрын
i have used every size and style of circle hook extensively, they will kill allot of gar by ripping entire gills out and they suck for penetrating the gars mouth armor. if a gar also swallows it which will happen eventually, gar cant pass circle hooks they rehook them in the rear on the way out.

Good video Henry. It's just too bad the cooler water of hydro-damns keeps Gator gar out of the rivers where Asian carp are rampant now. The water inversion drops the temp of the ecosystem. The worst thing about that situation it's still cheaper for the big fishing companies to net the oceans and people those fish rather than to feed 'em the Asian carp. Nobody knows what is in a fish stick or a drive-thru fish sammich.
