There are 1 or 2 places where you can softlock yourself but you won’t do this by accident and require pulling off some glitches

On my first run I stumbled upon the Mantis Sisters and Deepnest pretty much immediately after 1st Hornet fight 🤣🤦🏻‍♂️💀 Id HIGHLY recommend against that for players’ sanity! Otherwise agree.

@@geepike yea, that's just using your best judgment though. When I saw deepnest early on, I turned right back around and said hell no. Everything about it is warning you to stay away. Even the mantis fight is telling you that you shouldn't fight them until your nail is upgraded.

I was dumb. 🤣🤷🏻‍♂️ Cant remember if I had walljump but I was underpowered as hell and had to motor through it. You can def go straight from Greenpath to Mantis Village and fall into Deepnest fairly easy.

@@FFgamesftw actually, there are quite a lot of ways to softlock yourself. One of the most fascinating ones to me is getting to city of tears without claw(?) I believe. It lets you explore and travel across almost the entire left side of the city, yet leaves you with no possible way to leave.

I am pleading with everyone in the comments... Please do not spoil this game for her. Playing Hollow Knight blind is one of the best experience I have ever had in gaming. I'm super excited for this playthrough, and I know you are too. But please don't deprive Emma of the chance to get lost in this beautiful and amazing world. I know I can't ever get lost in this game again the way I did the first time, but the second best thing is watching someone else get to experience it. Please don't ruin that for the rest of us.

Hyped for this! One thing though, and I did the same thing at first, don't worry too much about going the right or wrong way! There isn't reallly a correct or set way to go, the exploration is the most fun part, and you'll unlock abilities to reach new areas later! Good luck!

i will second this. While I don’t think you should watch this until after you’ve played the game, the YTer GameMakersToolKit (GMTK) does an excellent breakdown of just how many possible ways there are to get through this game. Essentially, every key area has several different paths in and out, and several key items can be skipped altogether or gotten in many different orders. Essentially, this game really plays up the exploration element of Metroidvanias as well as any game in that genre.

Amber also thought she was bad at platformers when she started Hollow Knight. It's fun to watch the learning process, and the eventual confidence that develops.

Tips for better enjoyment: Read npc dialogue with full attention Explore but don't worry about finding everything at first Try and exhaust all the dialogue Check the menu every so often(especially after upgrades) Theorizing is highly encouraged

There are a few things I say at the beginning of most new play throughs of this game I see 1. There is no ‘supposed to’ in hollow knight. Anywhere u can go is a perfectly legitimate path 2. Theres pretty much no trick to killing enemies or bosses in this game. I’m not kidding everything from the first enemy to the final boss u can just hit with the nail. 3. Don’t stress too much about missing things, you’ll be doing a lot of backtracking as you get new items so even if you don’t see something the first time around, it’s not going anywhere :) 4. Getting lost is ok! You’re kind of meant to get lost it’s just the design of the game, so don’t stress if you don’t know where you are

Don't worry bout getting hit, A big part of the game is healing management. It's not just about how much soul you have but when you should heal whilst in combat or out and about. I'll hear no blasphemy against myla tho 😂 she is a saint and should be protected.

quick tips, dont worry, spoiler free: 1. you can swing your nail/sword up while on the ground and up and down while in the air (down swing on enemies to "pogo" them) 2. you should probably check out that torch area you said you hadn't explored yet 3. dont worry about getting geo (berries sure), you'll get a ton more later

Also non-spoiler things of note in response to what you've done so far: You can attack up and down as well if you hold that direction while you attack, to help with those flying enemies. Also don't be afraid about "being lost" or "going the wrong way" these types of games are about exploration and the community is here to watch you explore the game. Remember that there is no “correct” way of playing the game find your way and never feel that you’re playing it wrong because you likely aren’t, there is no correct path it’s an open world and no matter where you go the path will lead you too something important, that’s the beauty of this game❤

Okay, so you can swing your sword up, down, left, or right by pressing that direction as you hit the sword strike button. Down in particular is crucially important because you can bounce off enemies and spikes by timing a downward strike at the right time.

I love this style of playthrough, cause when you first play, EVERYwhere you go feels like the wrong place, you're constantly made unwelcome and rejected, and then over time the tiny little flecks of warmth and positivity start to feel positively radiant. You can fall in love with a bug who has like 2 lines of dialogue. And your anxiety is really recapturing that magic, for what it's worth.

Great episode! You aren't "bad" at this - taking chip damage isn't as big of a deal as it is in soulsborne, healing is free here! The only thing you did wrong this episode was worry how much you were doing wrong 😅 Remember that the game rewards you for paying attention, and you'll be fine ☺

The nail you have is the only weapon (that does damage, anyway). You get some more abilities for it and some attack power upgrade, but you never replace it.

With respect to D-Pad vs analog stick, ultimately I wound up using both. Depending on how precise I needed to be, I would switch. I generally found the D-Pad to be more precise in non-combat situations, but I found the fluidity of the analog stick useful in some platforming and harder combat situations.

Loved the gameplay! It reminds me of 2020 when I played for the first time and oh my god was that the golden era of games for me... Listening to the Hollow Knight menu song and seeing the face of somebody that is about to hop in one of the craziest and most exciting adventures in the gaming world... So nostalgic! I gave Matias this same advice when he started playing this game, consider remapping the controls so that you have attack on R1, it makes attacking and jumping so much easier which will be very important. Hopefully you love this game as much as the rest of us!

This series will be so much fun!! I have a few points that I believe every Hollow Knight player should know in order to make the game more fun (and less frustrating) for them, I'm sure Amber and other viewers might've already filled you in on some of these, but just to make sure... - don't be afraid to fight enemies, they were put there with the purpose of getting you ready for the bosses and give you the money you need for upgrades and items. - you won't ever buy any other weapons (or pick up from corpses, idky quirrel says that), your nail is the only weapon you'll ever have, new abilities and nail upgrades will come, but rest assured, every enemy will always be tuned to your level, no need to think that you're not ready for them. - aside from left and right, you can strike your nail up and down as well. - you WILL die A LOT, especially from bosses, so just like you did with false knight: don't give up, don't rush yourself, learn their patters and you'll beat them for sure. - rest every opportunity you get, it's better that enemies respawn than you dying in the middle of exploring. - speaking of which, explore, explore and explore, every nook and cranny. - don't worry about missing things by going "the wrong way", there is no wrong way, this game's map was carefully designed so that you won't be able to reach places you're not supposed to go, so go to whichever direction you want, have fun. In addition to that, backtracking is a BIG part of the game, so every area and every screen is available throughout the game as soon as you unlock them, meaning the game not only allows, but EXPECTS you to come back to them (multiple times even). other than that I look forward to watching you experiencing the rest of this amazing game. Have fun!!

I once saw a youtube comment along the lines of: "Hollow Knight fans all wish they could experience the game for the first time again, that's why they are so thirsty for blind playthroughs. To them it's like a crack addict getting their next fix." I would say that comment is completely accurate. That's why I urge you to have fun with being bad at the game, getting lost, failing, missing stuff, and later coming back to find all the stuff you missed (and sometimes feeling like an idiot for missing it in the first place). You can only do that once and it's a really great experience. Also be careful of comments giving advice. They are usually well meaning and just want to make sure you have the best experience, but might also rob you of those magical moments of discovering something for yourself. Now, just to make a bit of a hypocrite out of myself, I am going to give a few pieces of general advice that I don't think will deprive you of anything, but if you want to remain totally unspoiled then feel free to stop reading here. So a few things to keep in mind: 1) There will come a point where the game tells you what percent completion you have. However the maximum percent is 112%, not 100%. Don't be like my friend and get fooled by this, think you've done everything, and miss both dlcs and a hidden ending. 2) The game tries to tutorialize most of its mechanics by putting before you a situation that would prompt you to use them. It's generally well done, but if you aren't in the right frame of mind its also easy to miss. If you have an idea that might sound a bit wild don't be afraid to try it out, it might have been intentional. This goes for movement mechanics too, there are a lot of places that were likely intended to be reached with a movement ability you unlock later that can be reached earlier by just using some of the movement mechanics you start with, and not all of these skips are super difficult speedrunner ones. Again, don't be afraid to experiment, as the punishment for failure is rarely that harsh. 3) There are a ton of paths you can take through this game, so if you are struggling too much with one an available solution is almost always to go a different path and come back later when you are more prepared. This mostly applies to bosses, but there are also platforming challenges that can be made simpler with more unlocked movement abilities. 4) Try to keep a memo of stuff that you find but can't yet interact with/get past, so that when you gain the ability to clear it you can more easily remember where it was. This is what the map pins you can buy from the shop are for.
