To an ethologist, I'd like to ask whether bear can succumb to eating disorder such as bulimia in human case
@ExploreLiveNatureCams5 жыл бұрын
This is unlikely. Bears have not been known to pass the "mirror test" where an animal can recognize itself in a mirror. Because of this we can assume they do not have a self-image. Bears need to pack on the pounds to survive. They enter a period called hyperphagia which increases their appetite for food until the time for hibernation comes.

Do bears in zoos hibernate?
@mikefitz68375 жыл бұрын
For bears, hibernation is more of a strategy to avoid wintertime famine than avoid the weather. Brown and black bears who have access to food and mild weather can remain active (albeit quite lethargically) during the winter. Many, if not most, zoos and captive facilities give their bears the opportunity to hibernate like they normally would in the wild. This means allowing the bears to get fat in late summer and when the time is right, slowly reducing the availability of food and water so the bears begin to transition into their hibernation physiology.

What are the best weeks to go to Brooks Falls?
@mikefitz68375 жыл бұрын
In general, bears are most abundant at Brooks Falls in July, particularly mid-July. However, it's a good bet that you can see bears at the falls between the last week in June and early August. September is also a great time to watch bears at Brooks River too, although more bears fish for dead and dying salmon in other parts of the river and fewer bears fish at the falls in late summer. You can find more info on a visit to Brooks Camp on Katmai National Park's website: www.nps.gov/katm/planyourvisit/brooks-camp.htm

Didn't the USA pass a bill saying hunters can now kill them while hibernating?
@gdphantom16055 жыл бұрын
Not brown bears, and it was a Trump administration policy, not a bill.
@mikefitz68375 жыл бұрын
In 2017, the U.S. Congress passed a bill rescinding U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service regulations that prohibited predator control methods on national wildlife refuges in Alaska. The State of Alaska and the Alaska congressional delegation contended the state should continue to manage wildlife harvest on refuges. Those changes impact national wildlife refuges in Alaska, which are places managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The National Park Service, which manages Katmai National Park and Preserve, has a different set of regulations that prohibit similar practices on national preserves. In 2018, the NPS proposed rescinding those regulations but to best of my knowledge those changes have not gone into effect.
