Was stationed at HQ and HQ Company Medical Training Center. Arrived 11-17-69 and left for Camp HM Smith HI on 11-17-70. The base now bears no resemblance now to the FT Sam I knew. It was still somewhat intact in late 1989 when I was last there. The company was located on the East side where Salado Creek flows close to the road. It was good duty and I visited a number of times. The people of SA treated me well. Good memories.

God I miss AIT, don't take it for granted for all of you who are going to be going through AIT. It's going to be some of the best moments of your entire army career.

Ft Sam was a nice base. Air Force does all medical training there so I was there for a few months. Enjoyed it and the area.

Sure has changed since I was there in 1968. I was drafted during Viet Nam war and did basic training at FSH. I was wounded during bivouac by an artillery simulator and spent 2 weeks at Brooke Hospital listening to all the Viet Nam injured. It was the only time I was wounded in the Army and it was FSH. Not a good memory except the Worlds Fair was in San Antonio and I went there several times. It was great.

@andrademeza My husband just finished his BCT for 68w. He was at Fort Jackson, SC for that. So it think it just depends . He's in AIT at Ft. Sam right now, after that I believe he gets his orders to where ever they need him. His training isn't a year either, its 16 weeks.(He just graduated June 30th 2011. He'll be done end of October with AIT.) I'd talk to your local recruiter for more accurate info though....

It's 100 degrees here in July, not 84. Using the average temperature in this case is deceptive.
