Adin Masencamp takes us on a journey to a special wave nestled amongst huge kelp heads in the deep ocean off Southern Africa. But it’s not a wave for the faint of heart.
Surfing here requires dodging abalone poachers and the occasional shark, not to mention the wave itself, which bears a small-scale yet striking resemblance to Pipeline in Hawaii - if Pipeline broke in freezing cold water and was littered with huge kelp heads.
Along the way we discover why this is one of the few places in the world where kelp forests are growing rather than shrinking, and what it takes to surf amongst them.
