What surprises me when anyone brings up the problem of huge amounts of XP needed to go up levels for some of the races, is how often people miss the obvious. Simply give out triple or quadruple the amount you normally would! As a DM, it's your campaign! As long as the adventure has been pitched to the players as being of the utmost importance, give the players all they need! Another way around it is to tell them the only races allowed are the ones from the book. It's not nearly as difficult as you think. Especially with a game setting where 36th is max level.

I bought this module to use as a Dragonlance resource for Tinker Gnomes rather than for Mystara.

I cut all of this from my Mystara campaign. Always thought it was really out of place and goofy but your video is solid as always.

This was one of my second favorite Mystara books just for the read. Playability wise it's a 'gnome-brainer,' I 100% agree with you.

Unfortunately the silliness of some of the later Mystara supplements seems to have contributed to the perception that BECMI D&D was for kids and helped lead to the elimination of the whole line. And the irony of all this is the current success of Old School Essentials and other retroclones based on B/X, demonstrating the real appeal and utility of the system.

I love this book if for no other reason than it FINALLY brings gnomes to Mystara (and BECMI). Now if there were gnome illusionists it would be perfect.

I mean the races (except from gremlins) are great for PCs if the DM is willing to rebalance the xp. It is unfortunate that the book was made under the Dark Reign of Lorraine, when playtesting was considering a waste of TSR's company time.

@@Mr_Welch There's a history/mythology channel that managed to set their schedule for topics that ended up being in open conflict TWICE (once for Hong Kong, once for Ukraine). As the history guy put it, "if I had a nickle for every time it happened.. I'd have two nickles, but it's weird that it happened twice."

At least Mystara's silly stuff is generally concerned in silly books. The generally low-ish German fantasy RPG _Das Schwarze Auge_ aka _The Dark Eye_ on the other hand once had a metaplot battle featuring a _literal_ flying fortress and magical flak batteries. Then again the evil wizard behind this tends to do batshit stuff 'cause that's how he rolls.

Sometimes just hating on things from other settings as a joke lacks weight to me. Like we get it the nagpa got blorked into Faerun but no reason to hate on the cool concept of the Raven Queen cause 5e lore stuck her with them
