Okemos was founded in 1841 by Freeman Bray, a Canadian. Originally the village was named Hamilton. But the people who lived there called it Okemos and wanted it changed which it was in 1859. Freeman married, Had a family, and died in Okemos in 1895. I'm a descendant of Freeman Bray. He was my 4-Time Great Uncle. In fact my middle and last name is Freeman Bray. Freeman was the 4th Child and 3rd son of Mahlon Bray Sr. and Rachel Freeman, My 4 time Great Grand parents.

The shopping mall is dead, Okemos is costly, has a silly city tax (East Lansing & Lansing) and much crime from MSU which filters over to the other communities . In fact, MSU has the most campus crime in the state among all colleges. To add, Okemos is not diverse at all. Very few low or middle class which is why their schools perform well.

Okemos is just a census designation. It is just an idea, like disestablishmentarianism. There is no Okemos mayor; no Okemos parade. Sad face.
