I grew up in Hempstead; my mother took us to church in Prairie View; a Catholic parish called St. Martin de Porres. St. Martin, a Black man, was the first Catholic canonized a saint in the U.S. When we went to church there (Early 1970's) that Parish community was UNCOMMONLY integrated; Black, White, Hispanic. WONDERFUL PEOPLE! There were many college Faculty there. Very fond memories. St. Martin in PV was merged with St. Marys in Hempstead, and now is called St. Katherine Drexel. Thank you for the video.

Good video. One of my neighbors is a PV alum. He told me that Texas A&M didn't want Black students at "their" school so they built Prairie View A&M - the ole "separate but equal" BS. Texas A&M is less than 30 minutes down the road in College Station, TX.

Just ran across your video and was looking to see what you were going to say. You actually missed over half the town. Since you concentrated on the area adjacent to the campus. If you would have gone left off of US 290 down to Business 290, you would have come across more of the city. You could have seen city hall, the police dept, the PVAMU National Alumni Bldg, the fire dept, more small businesses and more neighborhoods. Also, that slave cemetery is very erie. You can almost feel the souls around you. Just south of where you were is a path that will lead you to a lot of the grave stones. If you continued further north on that road you will also see the local cemetery. I did love your drone shots you took while there that gave a good overview of the area you was in. It would have been nice to the historical marker of where Sandra Bland was pulled over prior to being arrested and before she hung herself in the county jail. I am not sure if it works the same way in Prairie View, but at College Station many parents buy a house for their student and rent rooms to friends. When they sell it they may not be expecting great profits. You kept talking about how everything was occupied by students, then were surprised at the low household income. Can't have it both ways. Some of those homes are probably occupied by faculty and staff, but we know their pay is not going to be high either.
@ThisSmallTown7 ай бұрын
Well the confusion lies between the town having one of the biggest HBCUs in the country and still having such a high poverty rate and now household income. So, it makes me believe the census isn't really including the students information. Also, I know most students who graduate from PV don't stay and settle in the town.
@lindacarroll68967 ай бұрын
@@ThisSmallTown According to the census taker rules for 2020, college students had to list their college residence as their residence because they spent the most time living there and not with their parents. In previous censuses parents listed their college students as living with them and sometiimes the students listed their college residence, so they got counted twice. In 2020, the census takers were instructed to list the students at the place they were living on March 15. And most likely, when you went through in May, the semester was over and a lot of the students were not in residence. As for household income, they were counting households where the student might not be working, so didn't have any income to report. Even if they were working, it might be part-time or minimum wage. When you average nothing with medium income it brings the average down. You didn't really take into consideration faculty and staff.

There are other subdivisions. The farm is owned by the university and includes a meat processing plant where the community can purchase the exceptional beef and goat cuts. No history provided regarding the relationship between the city and university and alumni who became mayors or students elected to the city council. You visited on a holiday weekend and spoke with no one. Long time residents could have provided you with so much history. Those who attended high school on the campus and lived on the campus as children. So much missed.

I showed exactly what's around that university that you can go look at today for yourself. I can't make up what's actually there. So when I pulled off from the university I showed the closest neighborhoods directly north, east, south, and west of it. If you don't like what you saw, that's not a representation of my video, but rather the city.
@phyllisdarden14442 ай бұрын
@ThisSmallTown Was your focus on the university or the town? If it's the university, the ranch is part of the university - you didn't know that, but research would have told you that. You assumed it was "private property." If the focus was the city, Alta Vista subdivision is about 200 feet south of Hope AME on the right. Had you driven through there, you would have seen an entire neighborhood of inhabited homes built in the 70s. Did I miss a comment in the video about the bowling center, Checkers, the post office, community center, the dollar store, and city hall? Did I miss mention of the elementary school across from the bowling center? Anyone who doesn't know the area would think that outside of the university, the city consists of nothing but dilapidated houses. Had you driven across the tracks, 3-4 miles, you would have happened on another subdivision. If you had turned right at Business 290, you would have come across another subdivision. I ran a quick real estate search for the area, I found 36 properties on the market - none of the houses were like the ones you showed unless I just didn't see those in your video. It's your video, but in my opinion, it does a disservice to the city of Prairie View. I watched your Hempstead and Waller videos. Very different... and you showed very little of the areas that are not as pretty, picturesque, or old western town. I kept waiting on a view of the "hanging tree" in Hempstead. www.movoto.com/prairie-view-tx/?adid=&campaignid=19976555735&adgroupid=&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAr7C6BhDRARIsAOUKifhCp8e2jxrMHbjl5s8DOEH-KTEVxHb3jSEqRWyogfFZg7ampALbSyAaAkl6EALw_wcB

Did you go further into the back of the cemetery, where you can see a few of the headstones? This exact spot in PV I've spent countless hours here, Its close to where i live, and the history of this area if fascinating. Alta vista the actual plantation home of Jared Kirby, was donated to the state i believe by Jared Kirby's wife. Who left Alta Vista Plantation for Austin Texas shortly after the death of her husband. I may be mistaken, but i believe the "slave" cemetery was used for both plantations in the area General Jared Kirby's Alta Vista at P.V. And the bigger one Leonard Waller Groce's Liendo Plantation, witch is still occupied and in use a few miles down the road. Random fact, during the first year students had classes and or lived inside the Alta Vista plantation home of the Kirby's. There were only a handful of students that first year, six perhaps. From the beginning to end of your video, your comments over-generalized the negative aspects of life in Prairie View. In the future, I suggest you do prior research of the cities/universities you will be visiting and highlighting. PV Grad 1983-BSEE

Rental statistics don't include college dorms. Any college town also has a ton of residents besides just students.

I realized that college students were included in the census hence the low household income. Student loans and parents money. They aren't poor!! Lol
@ThisSmallTown7 ай бұрын
Correct, the students information being included in the data does make it almost impossible to know how the town is doing outside of the University.

In most if not all your small towns you visit you give the crime statistics. Is there a reason you didn’t list it for this area ???
@ThisSmallTown3 ай бұрын
That's a really great question and observation. The prairie view episode was only the second video I ever uploaded to this channel since I started it this summer, so by this point I wasn't posting all the stats that you see in my later videos.

I think Waller County is the lowest lying County in the state, so it floods. They got Sulzer Pumps out there, used to be Johnson Pumps. I worked there.

How can they afford anything after paying 845.00 in rent on16,000 income certainly not a 250,000 house. I am living on 1,800 a month Social Security, my rent is 845 a month so I know what the dead broke and homeless line looks like. The stats just don't seem to match up to what a poverty area generally looks like and to work at the collage requires at least a high school diploma.

I believe from the numbers are being manipulated because they include the college students as well in the town.

I wish you would show this to the city council as a presentation , to wake them up and push this town forward. So embarrassing especially next to a black university and a black town.
@ThisSmallTown6 ай бұрын
Yes, the town has plenty room for improvement, but if we were to look at the glass as half full, at less we can say the campus itself is beautiful.

@@ThisSmallTown ok, decent point. Do more of these, please! I haven't gone thru your list of videos on this channel yet, but Galveston has a really rich history. From juneteeh, the storm of 1900, to military forts and bunkers still present on the island. Anyway, food for thought. I'll be hanging around for a bit 😏
@ThisSmallTown7 ай бұрын
Galveston is a little bit too big to make the cut to fit my niche of a small town with their population of about 53,000. All the towns I've covered have a population of about 10,000 or less with the exception of Katy at 25,000. Plus I'm noticing, the higher the population of the town that I cover, the worst the video preforms.
