www.crosstrainingenduro.com tractionerag.ca Lucky me, I've finished filming Romaniacs and now it's time for two weeks of dirt fun in the Carpathian Mountains. So it's endless climbs and descents. And check out the terrain. These Romanian enduro forests are amazing compared to our scrappy forests back home. And we are still only about two kilometres from our base so just riding the extreme enduro back yard of Carpathian Adventures. Everyone who rides in Romania says the grip is amazing and I can see what they mean. My bike is so new it still has tubes which are pumped up to 15psi to avoid punctures and yet it gets up these wet sections without drama. In a day or two it will be changing over to the fleet's standard mousses and then the grip and traction will go to a whole new level. Long legs make a big difference in this terrain. There are countless mountain ranges to explore still with this Romanian dirt riding. And plenty of clutch slipping needed to get up them lol. Most of us are in our forties or fifties and by mid afternoon most of us are dreaming of that hot tub back at the farmhouse, and a handful of anti inflammatory medication. So it's back to our hard enduro Carpathian Adventures base. Stunning views. Even with the Steg Pegz my upper body is aching each night, I doubt I would get a full day's ride in without my favourite crutch. The first surprise? Most enduro tours are based in town so you need to ride for thirty minutes on road to get to the Romanian enduro tracks. Our farmhouse is in this beautiful little village, barely changed for hundreds of years, and the various tracks are between thirty seconds to one minute from our doorstep. Incredible. And the hill climb starts immediately. And you can ride just about anywhere. You really need to focus on these tracks with this Romanian dirt riding. If you go off track extreme enduro you would need rope and a pile of guys to drag the bike back up again in Romanian enduro. For anyone interested, our guides said that descent is pretty typical of a tough bronze descent in Romaniacs, or maybe an easy one in silver class. So you need your wits about you even in the bronze class. But first I have to get there. Bloody Australia, miles from anywhere. Three flights and 24 hours later I arrive in Romania. My host for this trip is Carpathian Adventures, they have renovated this beautiful old farmhouse and I'll be riding with a mad bunch of New Zealanders the next few days. And man do I need the Steg Pegz with this Romanian dirt riding. Centuries ago the shepherds cleared the forests on top of the mountains for their sheep. Romanians are famous for their hospitality and it really shows when you are a dirt bike. Much of the time we are riding on their land. There are plenty of options. Easy roads you can drive up. Ridiculously difficult single track. We have chosen the middle path, and it's just tricky enough to be interesting. I should also mention the Carpathian Adventures fleet is all late model TPI KTM 300s so this will also be an interesting chance to see what the Austrian beasts are like for hard enduro. Eventually the climb stops and the views start. Back home we would be dodging bullets from angry farmers. But here the shepherds just save and say 'buna!' Time to try riding down the mountain now with Carpathian Adventures. We are in the Carpathian Mountains, home of the Romaniacs hard enduro, and there are endless hills to climb around here for hard enduro.

Since posting these vids a few Romanians have told me that some property owners and locals are getting angry with dirt riders disturbing their flocks up in the mountains, riding on tracks meant for hikers only, riding loudly past their farmhouses and riding like idiots in the villages. I would suggest going with a tour group if possible as the guides work hard to keep good relations with the locals, and avoid prohibited areas etc. 😊

Glad to see you enjoy Romania. It is a beautiful country. Can you imagine I left it 3 years ago and moved to Germany where you are not allowed with any motorized vehicle outside tarmac? Oh, btw, I heard some rumors there's some new legislation in Romania that severely restricts offroad access. Got any first hand info on that?

It's just an update to the existing laws, Cosmin. The Carpathian Adventure guys checked and it doesn't affect their tours at all.

i ve been in Romania a couple of time and its great, but its getting buiser every time. i hope the enduro invaders wont do any harm to themselves by annoying people. dont make to much noise, dont run across their fields, be kind and we all will be able to get there for riding our bikes in the future. I ve been there with many different bikes, XT600, YZ250, YZ125, WR450 and to be hones- the bike doesnt matter- it such a nice scenery its not the riding alone which makes this place a heaven to us!

Looks amazing but did this video account for the new laws? Romania introduced a new law last year that banned off-road riding and I wonder how these types of things will be affected.

I emailed them when I saw that Rafael because I'd like to get back there again. They said it's just an existing law but there was an update which triggered a bit of a media frenzy. Technically it's always been illegal to ride in certain parts of the public forests without permission. The update is meant to ensure organized groups get permission first. The Carpathian Adventure guys checked and they are still permitted.

This is very different to the romanian experiences most brits know of. You would be stripped naked to your pants if you stopped on the street in the uk with romanians around.

@@crosstrainingenduro even the fastest chav couldnt beat a romanian, i was changing the sofa in my flat, i left the old one by the front of the house and walked 6m up the side to open the garage. (You NEVER leave 2 doors unlocked round there) as i was walking back to get the sofa 4 romanians had stopped in a mk2 cavalier and started loading it into the back! That really happened.
