I went to the Maid Cafe at Anirevo 2013 in Vancouver and they had all the same rules posted outside. Keep in mind I have no frame of reference because I've never been to an actual Japanese maid cafe, but I kind of likened it to going to Hooters... Not that the girls are dressed provacatively, but you're definitely NOT going for the food, you're going for the experience. It was fun! Glad I went, but I couldn't imagine wanting to actually hang out in one...

So, consquentially Maids in a maidcafe are 'behind glass' for their otakus, even there is no glass, and they are just Maids doing their job, not having a certain personal identity for the visitors (only the identy of being a certain Maid in the cafe preferred by someone, but of course they have a personality which is somehow abstract).

What if you want to genuinely become their friend? How can you friend someone if your not allowed to contact them beyond the cafe? Its like the only way one can become their friend is to volunteer or work at the conventions with them so they could see you as a person not a client. If the interactions does not produce a prolonged sense of meaning for both parties beyond the cafe then it was just an illusion. The happiness was base on something artificial and the people was just playing a role.
