Personally I thought it was a mistake to keep trying to find ways to bring back to the Big E. While this story made sense it would’ve made more sense if Sisko himself was in command of the Defiant. Insurrection he shouldn’t have been in and Nemesis it was understandable with the wedding if Riker and Troi. Basically 1 in the 4 movies he shouldn’t have been in unless Insurrection was rewritten to again include the Defiant (with the rest of the crew of her as a cameo) and as part of a larger offensive against the Dominion.

There are so many great things about this that make Trek the powerhouse that it was. We see the Defiant doing its best, probably doing the best against the cube. We see Worf and in only a few lines we see he is still the fearless warrior he always was. The Enterprise joins the battle and the first thing they do is destroy the phaser array attacking the Defiant, fly between it and the cube and scan it for life signs. All this BEFORE they even check on the admiral. Then we also see Worf immediately come to the bridge to continue to help with the battle, probably not knowing that they destroyed the cube. I also really loved the opening shot of the Cube. You really get a feel for its sheer size.

In-universe, the Galaxy lines were at pickets for the Dominion War engagements. When the Borg attacked, Starfleet countered with multiple pickets, using the older ships first and each picket had newer and newer ships. The only ship to be present at every picket up to Earth was the Defiant herself. So by the time the Borg reached Earth, they were facing ships and technologies they had not seen yet.

The Galaxies were probably on deep space patrol or being moved to the Cardassian Border. The Dominion War was not quite officially underway until the end of 2373 but the "Cold War" stage with the Federation was still ramping up, and the Klingons were already fighting Cardassia and The Dominion. Given how the older fleet fared against The Borg last time, Starfleet probably didn't want to lose too many ships fighting them again, so they sent a special taskforce made up of newer ships that were specifically designed to fight the borg. I know we don't see many Intrepid's in this scene but I'm sure there would have been a few in the engagement.

westrim restraint is important to feature each design, otherwise it’s just noise; consider how each ship is discernibly different; contrast that with modern saturation of effects that show no attention to shot composition... Wasn't it Will Riker's doppelganger Thomas who first said, "tough little ship". Yes it was, but Worf is right it may be smaller but it still packs quite a punch!

Of course you’re not going to detect any critical systems in that spot. The first time you encountered the Borg, your sensors told you that there were no centralized systems anywhere!

Riker can joust all he wants at Warfs "little ship," but the truth is Warf made Captain before him. Something he truly deserved after all the objections noted.

Riker: Tough little ship. Picard: That's nothing. You should have seen when they shrunk a runabout and three people to the size of coffee c... Worf: I do not see what is so humorous about being small.

That would have been the best instance for Picard to order 'fire at will' and Worf draws his phaser and stuns Riker 'I think I remember'

Interesting factoid from Whattrek Culture; the area of the cube that Picard had the fleet target contained the cube's waste extraction systems. In other words... they fired at the poop tanks :D

@@procta2343 Rick Berman decided to bring on an action director, forgetting that the damn show was built on character beats more than action. And who does he settle for? Stuart Baird. Don't get me wrong, he was a master film editor. I feel that he's as much responsible for the success of the first superman movie as Richard Donner, or Christopher Reeve. But sitting in an editing bay, hanging on to Richard Donner's coattails doesn't mean you can direct. Every story I ever heard about Stuart Baird and the movies he directed had one thing in common, he was a miserable human being. Also says a lot when he refuses to do his homework and view the previous films, ar least and flat out said in multiple interviews that he hated star trek. Seriously, that's the guy you're trusting your franchise with? Shit, they should have just let Patrick Stewart do the show.

Star Trek: First Contact takes place on stardate 50893.5, while the DS9 5th season episodes "Children of Time" and "Empok Nor" take place on stardates 50814.2 and 50901.7....I noticed he is wearing the wrong house symbol. He should be wearing House of Martok but is wearing House of Mogh.

I've seen this scene a couple dozen times and never noticed the Steamrunner during the assault on the Cube. Also, once again, Troi is just there. Picard obviously looks distraught, and her job is to notice that.
