Thanks for saying that. I have 100 chickens every time I lose one I feel terrible guilt until I lose another one, and the guilt continues with every loss. Theyre 6-7 years old it never gets easier but I try to remember I did everything I could to give them a good life

Thank you for this heartfelt video, I recently lost my old rescue hen Holly (she recovered from illness several times and was blind) they hide illness so well and it just doesn't get any easier to lose a pet. Your words are wise, you gave them their best life, even if only for a short while. Hug a chicken and you'll feel better (maybe a little itchy with red mite!) 🐔👍

Your the best chicken moma, you do the best in whatever situation your in & for your babies. I also love my ckns & do what I can to help them when sick. I pray then give natural remedies & also use your recipie of Egg & mix Oregano oil, vet Rx, drop. It hurts much when we loose any. These are our pets, besides for eggs. My favorite hen died suddenly and it broke my heart. She'd follow me all over the yard and talk to me. I live in the same area as you so good shelter and yard was a must. I've raised birds for many years and I was never hit so hard as I was when she left me, I still don't know why she died. I say " I'll never get attached to another" but then there comes that one that pecks at my heart strings...again. Love what you're doing, it's worth it.

I've been fighting a mysterious sickness this year myself. I bought chicks from a hatchery, 13 LF Cochin, (3 are left), 8 silkies (4 are left). They starting dying at about 2 to 3 months old. It has been devastating, none of the chicks I hatched this year in the same pen, have died and remain extremely healthy. I was a Vet tech for 15 years and this has been so frustrating. We don't have a Vet that treats fowl in the area. Whatever it is seems to have finally slacked off, but I literally think I have PTSD. At 72, the chickens give me a reason to get up in the morning.

You are such a precious, inspiring treasure! I want you to remember all of the little creatures that you have brought back from the brink of disaster and the beautiful life that you have provided them. Even if that beautiful life only lasted for a short while it was worth the love that you poured into them. You have inspired me to be brave enough to bring home some sick babies from the feed store myself and try to nurse them back to health. Sometimes they don't make it but I know they were loved and cared for in their last hours. Keep on doing what you do...your love has a ripple effect that is spreading across the entire world!

Wife and I sit in the coop and chat with our chickens. I find it silly but so calming. There is alway that one chicken that just goes along with it. Some folks have cats we have chickens.. Buck Buck ✌️

I've lost almost all the girls I started with 4 years ago. Three from illness, 4 from a dog that got into my yard when I didn't lock the side gate properly. @@chickentender4037 Yeah I miss my Roo Roo. He died at the end of winter. It was rough. I have sense tripled the size of their caged run and I let em around the yard for at four hours a day. I wish could just let them run out of run all day, but the predator population is crazy thick.

As always, hearing your voice and words gives me hope and strength, not only in my backyard, but in the world in general. Recently my speckled sussex was suffering. No matter how much I researched, I couldn't find the correct diagnosis. We don't have a vet that will see chickens. The closest one is over 100 miles. Like you, the morning I thought I would find that she had died, she instead had turned a corner and mysteriously got better. I love this chicken. She, too, started life with difficulties. I've now "saved" her three times in 2 years. As a chick with coccidiosis, last fall with a severely impacted crop, and this month with who knows what. I used all the tools you have given me and I believe that it why she is still here. I knew nothing about chicken keeping when I started in spring 2020. I'm so grateful that I found you right away! Thanks for sharing and caring .... in all ways.

I too lost a beautiful young white rooster recently, reason unknown.... he woke up ill and died within the hour. So, I buried him in a 15 gallon nursery pot in my garden and planted wild flower seeds on top. They are sprouting and I can still 'speak' to him every day. I work at a hospital and I'm the same, I can't wait to get home and see my chicken...at the moment I only have our disabled indoor chicken. She's out rn since weather is nice. She brings me so much joy. And I tell my daughter (who literally kept her with her 24 hrs a day when she was a chick dealing with wry neck, unable to walk or to eat or drink on her own. I had to chicken sit so she could shower) it's good that we ended up with her bc anyone else might have put her down during one of her 2 episodes of wry neck. But she has a good life with us. She's not spoiled! At all (so I keep saying)! And I worry about her when I'm gone, if she's too hot, too cold...

I loved this video. It brought tears to my eyes because I related to it so much. I lost several flock members throughout my 2 short years of raising chickens. There were very brief illnesses, sudden deaths and even a stroke of one hen. I nursed a young Silkie who was bullied and didn’t get to eat & drink and developed Wry Neck. It was most likely due to malnutrition and vitamin deficiency. She came to live inside, be hand fed, given vitamins and held a lot so I could support her neck and head as much as possible. It took 8 weeks but when she returned to the flock, I had a new house and run for just Silkies& Bantam Cochins. I thought she would love me forever but she runs from me now, is a feisty, strong hen and in my FB circle Buffy is infamous! I was still new at chicken keeping but was determined to give her every chance and we made it! Buffy and I. 😊

I’m so sorry this happened. I didn’t think I would become so attached to our chickens but here I am. My husband and I sit out with them in the coop every single day. They give us much more than we give them. I worry about them just like I do with our cats and dogs… our chickens are our family and yes I’ve become the crazy chicken lady! @@tommielourogers4327 right? I’ve always heard they are dumb and scared of people but I find that’s not the truth at all. Our girls are very interested in everything we do and they are super loving. They like to sit in our laps and fall asleep, they perch on our shoulders and a few literally run up to us when they see us (just like a dog!) I think the only frustrating thing is when one isn’t doing well, we don’t have a local vet for livestock and so channels like this save the day for me.

I know exactly how you feel. When my chickens are sick I cry like a baby I can't function because for some reason what they feel I'm feeling. My husband told me the other day you have forgotten about your house and your family due to taking care of the chickens all the time. I can't help it they made me happy.👍❤

Hi, I have been watching your channel for a good while, I just love how you give instructions and your overall love for your babies. I got my first chickens 2 years ago, and I have loss 3 of them. I cried and felt like such a bad chicken mama. I love my babies so much! I will tell you how much, lol, yesterday evening I go to the coop to check on them and call them into their run. I left their chicken coop door open so they could get to their water, I closed the door and got them in the run. Open door to get the eggs, and I see what looked like a black hose hanging from one of the nest with Mattie sitting in the nest. Well, it was not a hose, it was a huge chicken snake, and I am deadly afraid of any snake. I grabbed a long limb and tried to flip it out of the nest, thankfully Mattie fussed and got out of the nest. I did manage to get the limb under the snake and flip it out of nest. It stopped along the wall so I had to tap it on the tail to get it moving. it left!!! I am still freaked out, however, the love for my babies overcame the fear of the snake. You inspire me so much, so keep doing what you do!!

Thank you for sharing your story today !! As I am listening to your video and hearing talk about your sick chicken . I totally understand the feeling when you are with your flock .. I have chickens for the past 3 \12 years after moving to a small farm they have brought me so much joy and peace when I needed the most . I lost my mother due to COVID on 2020 and they become my therapy to help me with my grieving of loosing my mom .when I am with them I feel my mom is with helping me caring for them . I have a a small flock of 14 they all have names and there’s my favorite girl Silvia who’s the moment I meet her we have these connection , I called my special needs chicken she survived a raccoon attack and half of her head is hairless and she has these looks of a brave warrior!! Silvia been sick on and off for the last 4 months taking her to the vet few times treating with medication and natural remedies but still doesn’t get completely cure . But she still thrives and eats like every day is going to be her last meal !!! Today when o got home from work I notice is back again ;( her sour crop issues with at these point I am sure she has some more gastrointestinal issues . I took her inside the house give give wash her face and wigs with a wet washcloth and I can tell she was enjoying it ;)- I have her fresh water and her medication which I have a full bottle from the vet cause these issues keep happening on and off. I wrap her on a towel and I hold her close to me and jst start crying cause I realize one of those times that I am treating her it may not go away and I may loose her … jst the thought of loosing her it was like I was loosing my mother again …. Life is hard but like you said these chicken got the best time of her life since I meet her and she brought me so much peace and joy at the same time .. I enjoy watching your videos and have learn a lot from it . I believe my mother is also helping me watch over them. Can’t wait to read your book 🥰love chickens love Chickenlandia !! Thank you

Mid spring my birds started dying. About one a week. I couldn't figure out what was going on. They weren't outwardly sick, but upon examining them their necks seemed wrong somehow. I assumed then that it must be predation, maybe cats, although they weren't taking the bodies with them. When I lost one of my chicks and one of my ducks in the same week I broke down crying outside. A kid next door came over to the fence that separates our properties and admitted her grandma had been rewarding them for throwing rocks at our birds. Their grandma has this absolutely bonkers hate boner for us because she believes she owns our driveway because "her dad won it in a poker match in the 70's". I am not talented enough to make something that ridiculous up. We've had to have numerous injunctions against this psycho for trying to build in our driveway. She still tries at least twice a year to pull some sort of nonsense. The kicker? She doesn't even live there! So, we moved out entire coop to another section of our yard and they've been fine now despite the heat out here. The bottom line is, some people are nuts, and they're going to be nuts all over you regardless of what you do. Ignore them and move on.

Thank you for this reminder. I literally teared up when you started talking about the end of our chicken's life, and I'm not prone to crying. I am a developing homesteader, and have poultry for meat and eggs, and I get really attached to my animals. It's hard but I always strive to give my animals the best life, and then in return I get great eggs and good quality meat. Their companionship has also helped me through a lot of hard times and given me sanctuary from the modern world and drama. So I will continue on. Thank you, and long live Chickenlandia!

It’s so heartbreaking when something happens to them. I have a special needs chicken that ended up with a huge gash under where her crop is. I could see her insides. It’s been a month of struggle but I no longer think she is going to die from it. She is doing so well and almost completely healed. I love your videos and I’m glad she is doing well.

I have had many Parrots over the years and it hurts every single time. I now have chickens and I'm sure it's not going to change accept these are young ones at the moment and I am new to it all. As a chicken keeper of 21 years, I had to learn that chickens aren't always the hardiest of creatures and it is indeed about the quality of life they have while they are with us. I have had them not make it out of the brooder while others live to be 10 or 11 years old. Who knows why? I have had them get sick and I saved them and I have had them get sick and nothing I did helped. I have also gone out and found chickens dead that seemed perfectly fine the day before. I have had to learn to just do the best I can and some times things happen despite our best efforts. It's nature and we can't always control her. My girls have a safe, secure, well ventilated coop. They have a covered run , with shade cloth and fans in the summer and enclosed with plastic in the winter. They are never left out in the elements nor locked up in their coop. They have plenty of food to eat, fresh water, lots of nest boxes and room to scratch and peck and dust bathe. I wish I had a huge property to let them free range on, but I do the best I can with what I have and they have it pretty good all things considered. They also have my time, attention, love and care. I see to their every need every day. I feed them before I feed myself even. So yes, it is hard when things go wrong, but we cannot beat ourselves up about it. Just do the best you can each day and know your chickens had a good life with. you.

Wow, you moved me today with your honesty. They are not just chickens- we love them that much that we do get emotional over them. I understand your story because I went through something similar where either I didn’t realize smthg was wrong, until it was too late, and one very young hen passed away or I had serious medical issues in my family that it caused me to be distracted. In total, I lost two chickens and one turkey and one alpaca within weeks. In the end, I realized, just like you, that I knew in my heart ❤️ that I gave them the best life possible. Most animals I have are rescued and giving them the best life and love is important. I know you love your chickens and I have learned so much from you. I 💯% support you and am thankful to people like you who truly love and care the deepest.

Aww I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my favorite girl Tikki a month ago and it was so hard because no one around me understood how much she meant to me. Keeping chickens has introduced me to gardening and outdoor life I never used to enjoy. Please know that your videos are inspiring and I relate to alot of what you shared about the importance and benefits of chicken Keeping. I’m so sorry. I totally get how hard it is and how you feel. I reached out to you when I was going through similar circumstances. It’s so hard sometimes and there is never ever just a chicken. Recently I have had trouble with my Vorwerk. I think I had an 80% fatality rate. So I have made a difficult decision to not hatch anymore. 💔😭 I have a pullet and a rooster the same age probably 10 months old. The pullet has quite a bit of character. One of our Rooster warriors rehoming Volunteers loves them to. She had lost lots of chickens ( chooks in Australia) I have offered those 2 to her. I said I know you will love them and care for them. No matter how short their life is. Also did a fair bit of asking other breeders questions . Only one breeder hadn’t had a problem with them. Like the Lakenvelder they have practically no resistance to Cocci. Yes I do sell my chickens. But I still love each one. I don’t sell the roosters though. I need to do something to give myself an independent income. Also to keep helping Roosters. I keep way to many of them. I’m going to share this with our Rooster Warriors Rehoming volunteers group. Because all of us girls have been at the point of giving up our chickens because of the heart 💔 . Honestly I was in tears watching your video. You are inspiring. I've been keeping a small backyard chicken flock as well since 2020. I love each and everyone of my girls... Three have passed and l miss each one terribly. But your absolutely right...l gave them the best life possible. I am dealing with one particular chicken now who has been sickly for almost her whole short 2 year life. But l love her. And yes people can be cruel without really understanding. That's ok..my chikens love me. They run to me each day just to greet me. 💞 And maybe hoping mom's got treats. You are a very special person. And yes, I often feel like Elliott and E.T. with some weird psychic connection. I have a couple of ladies who will sit on my lap and 'vacuum' the stress out of me. They are magical! 💖💖💖

I just lost my rooster (Rudy) and a hen (Corinthi-Hen) after I brought in 3 new hens. I’m pretty sure the new hens brought a strain of coccidiosis that my flock wasn’t immune to. I’ve been feeling so horribly guilty and sad, but when I heard you say how we gave our chickens a great life compared to most chickens, that resonated with me and I felt some happiness again! You’re right, our chickens got to run, play, scratch around and forage and they were loved❤. Thank you for sharing because I was feeling ready to throw in the towel because I felt like I failed my chicken babies. So thank you for being vulnerable because it’s encouraging to me and I’m sure many others can say the same❤.

So sorry for your loss. & thank you for your insight. We have 15 young birds & one very old lady who is the last of a small rescue flock from a neighbor who had to be in hospital & could no longer have them. They were old & sweet & very loved & at the time we had no other chickens . We had them for 4 or so years before their age began to show & we gradually lost our old girls. Gert is our last one & she has her very own space to play & run around & she comes in to sleep in her own little indoor coop each night. The young ones have there own coop & run outdoors & are Lavender Orpington, Buff Orpington & Partridge Ricks. They have been loved & handled gently since they were tiny chicks & you couldn’t ask for sweete girls & rooster. We live on a small farm & they are intended as layers & members of our pet family. We love them. I understand totally about loosing our loved ones. Animal or human , loosing one is sad ..

I've been hesitant to get silkies again, I lost my entire flock all at once, went out to feed and all 12 were dead. I never knew what happened no sign of anything!!! that was 15 years ago. took me 5 years to get over that and get more regular chickens. Have had all kinds of chickens for 10 yrs now and have kiddos now too. They would love some silkies, looking at yours I may just do it!

You are the reason I have chickens ❤️ I wanted them but was afraid because I wasn't sure what to do with them once I brought them home. I watched all your videos, some more than once. I finally did it and I'm so glad I did! I started with 4 and lost one to the neighbor's dog. Right now my 3 ladies Dolly (my favorite), Rocket and Nugget have coccidiosis. Rocket and Nugget are doing better but now Dolly is egg bound and having a hard time passing the egg. I'm trying everything but no luck so far. I'm having a hard time leaving her at night and when I go to work. I feel better now knowing that yes she might only be a few months old but she has a better life than other chickens do! Thank you! I think this is the best, most touching video I've ever watch on you tube. The day I brought home two little day old baby chick's, I had no idea the impact it would have on my life. I now have 8 hens, and 20 eggs in the incubator. My daughter and her young children got involved with my chicken obsession and now, because they can have roosters, we have a whole sustainable chicken farm. My 73 year old mother was gifted 3 beautiful laying hens after she saw what my daughter and I were doing. My mom now supplies home grown eggs to my younger sister. When my sister and her husband experienced the joy and nutrition the eggs brought, they helped my mom build a bigger coop and they plan to expand their flock before it snows. Raising chickens comes with ups and downs, and we love it! Chicken therapy is a real successful intervention to many things that plague our modern existence. We have all of this, and it brought joy and friendship beyond anything I imagined because I first watched a video from a lady, who told me a story, about a little girl wanting to make the world a better place, and how when she grew up, she became the president of Chickenlandia, and how chickens bring people together. I can't wait for your book. Thank you for everything!

We are the same age and have the same love for these amazing beings. They are my chicken therapy! People understand losing a dog after loving them for a year but they are so judgemental when I cry over a chicken. They are my world and I understand your situation completely. We adopted some chicks that (even after doing everything right), passed away. Following this, the rest of the flock became ill and died one after the other. You are my inspiration and I thank you so much!

Oh I love my chickens. I had someone ask me how long do I spend with my chickens and how often do I go out to spend time with them? Well, I go spend at least an hour in the morning about another hour in the afternoon then there's a new chicken that's still learning to become a member of the flock that needs special attention and love I spend with at night after the others go into the coop. She's an Easter egger and is the sweetest chicken ever. All she wants is to be apart of the flock and it's been very hard. She's just now able to sleep cuddled up with some of them but the rooster is still being a real jerk. So yeah, I get it. I've only been a chicken lady for 6 months and they have totally captured my heart! We chicken lovers have to stick together. They are only a few of the animals in our life and I'm always fascinated by them and could watch and interact with them all day if I didn't have so many others to take care of. ❤️ I live my other babies too but I sit with the chickens and think..oh my goodness...I finally have my chickens!! What joy!

No shame, my friend. You're an empath. I am too. I've got several that I've had that connection with. I just held them so closely and so tightly and wondered what I would ever do if they didn't pull through. I am also 47 and I've had an extremely painful and empty life. The love of an animal is unconditional and innocent in a way that a human connection is often not possible. Thank you for being brave enough to speak out about this. ❤

Sick chickens are some of the hardest animals to take care of, and chickens always terrify me when they get sick. Especially if its a disease that is incredibly hard to research or the internet produces the answer of "they wont make it" which just makes the process harder. Girl! You have taught all of us so much through your passionate teaching about your flock. We are called to be the best stewards of these animals, that are here for our enrichment, as possible. We've had a rough time here on our practice homestead too. After I repaired a fence that our dogs broke, I let the dogs out because they had to pee after being inside for the repair. I totally forgot that our chickens were also out. With it being so hot, 3 of our girls overheated from the dogs chasing them. Our son was crushed. So off to get new chick we went and there were ducklings too. Well, 3 more chicks and one duckling went home with us, despite our city having very tight regulations on flocks. He was in love with his duck. 2 weeks later, Quackers dropped dead for no apparent reason. These birds are frail sometimes and any one thing can take them down. We just have to stand strong on our obligations as you do! We now have 5 mixed hens, 2 Pekin ducks and one sissy rooster that we love dearly. Life's lessons aren't easy, but neither are most of life's worthwhile joyrneys. Keep up the amazing work!

Good for you. I totally agree with you. Those of us who rescue chickens can never feel guilty. We certainly feel sad and sorry when we lose them but as you say, they had a great life that they would have never had in that other big ugly chicken world. I pray you find some comfort in knowing how many chicken lives you have saved by your channel and sharing your knowledge with all of us. We are new to chickens. I watched all your videos on first aid and caring for a sick chick. I was believing for the best but preparing for those times. I’m sure there are many who could testify that the knowledge you freely give to us, helped them when something came up. For me it was knowing something wasn’t right with one of my girls. I brought her in the house, put her in the spare shower (cuz that’s what you do) and gave her electrolytes with yolk. I also gave her rescue remedy and r&r. That was all she needed- I think it was heat exhaustion. Thank you from our family and from all the chickens that have recovered because of you. 💜💜💜🐓🐓🐓🐥🐥🐥

So sorry for your loss! My dogs and my chickens are not only pets, they're partners. My dogs are pets but also valuable security for me as a single woman. My four Plymouth Rock hens are pets, but they also provide me with eggs. Loss of animal companions is difficult. Keep in mind, just like with people, you really can't stop the spread of disease. It's going to happen unless you (or your chickens) live in a bubble. There have been really toxic substances that some individuals put their trust in, but the best solution is a strong immune system. Your coop and chooks are lovely!😀

Wow, I’m sobbing. I lost my frizzle this month. She was my first fuzz ball and I miss her dearly. She really did have her best chicken life and took a part of my heart with her. I found an amazing local aviary vet who is determined to make a difference with reproductive illnesses. I reminded her that we’ve breed chickens to perform or look a certain way generally without regard to long term health so she has am uphill battle but she and her staff all adore chickens as much as we do. I really appreciate your very specific intro. Open vs closed flock makes a huge difference. Everyone CAN have relatively stress free chickens in a closed and confined flock, but you have chosen to rescue chickens and give them an outdoor environment, which is beautiful and also a special situation. It’s truly advanced chicken tending. Do NOT feel badly for posting reality. We do our very best, and sometimes that’s not enough. It is nature. They all have/had a much better life because of you. 💕

Thank you for reiterating something that I believe strongly. My chickens have the best quality of life I can give them. I protect them and care for them and give them the best diet ever. But sometimes things happen. I just have to remind myself that I did the very best I could and they weren't living in a battery cage being forced fed or forced to lay eggs for some conglomerate.
