I actually have a big screen TV but don't really watch it. I don't watch the news, nonsense TV, and believe it or not...I rarely ever watch movies lol (I always fall asleep and just not my thing). I have basic cable and no Netflix, etc. I like learning shows, and HGTV DIY stuff which is all I really watch. My TV is there for decor, a little entertainment and for guests. I'd rather read a book, be in nature or do something productive at home.

I’m with you. I think having a TV above the fireplace is an old “played out” design tactic and it’s rather tacky looking to me; besides that, it just ends up distracting from the natural beauty and character of the fireplace. It might even look like you are trying too hard to impress. Nothing should have to compete with that pure fireplace charm and beauty and the modesty/minimalism you will create. Not having the TV is also more sublime and classy if done right and if the rest of the room design supports it. Very nice work Melissa 👍🏼. It looks great, now you just have to finish it with some brick facing, stucco or something of your desire to bring out more realism and give it that final touch.

This is awesome! What happens to the steam, does it ever steam up the glass, and are there any mould concerns?
@WelcometotheWoodsBlog
@WelcometotheWoodsBlog 3 жыл бұрын
When you first turn on the fireplace the steam can condensate a bit on the glass. This goes away after 10 min and doesn't happen at all if you're running the heater part. I haven't noticed any build up of condensation or water anywhere on the unit or anywhere in my house. It's winter so our furnace is running often and our air is really dry. I am not worried about mold, I imagine that's something Dimplex tested for ahead of time.

@decosse01

You did an amazing job - great result. I don't want to take anything away from it but just a couple of constructive points on the electrical: you mentioned the enclosed outlets and said 'this is OK because I can cut through the framing later if need-be - that is a no-no, it must be directly accessible (but that's a tough one to overcome - it can't be a junction box either). The Cable however does not matter. And the wire nuts - twist the wires clockwise, the same direction as you will be screwing on the nuts (when you twisted the wires anti-cw, when you screw on the nuts they are going against the direction of your already twisted wires).

Flat screen great idea but NEVER above the fireplace. The TV should always be eye level 30in to 36 from floor to bottom of TV. Otherwise, the viewing experience will not be optimal and the flaws in the screen will be much more noticeable. I'm kind of into this stuff so thought i'd comment. Great video by the way.

Please don't put a mantle if your going to put TV above. I have a stove, didn't want a mantle but inseted a very old piece of oak to hold wall up the way it had been originally. Old wood wasn't good. Hopefully a TV will go above it though I'm with you, not keen, just takes up too much space. As behind Stove is mostly hollow, 30yrs ago stoves were removed ?? I know, mad, small fireplace installed with boiler at back to heat radiators, unsuccessfully, there are still electric points there, have to be upgraded of course. I'm thinking of previous house with antique surround and huge mantle. I don't think my 4 boys ever understood they weren't there to set various objects on. I'd 2, one in a smaller room. Threats carried no weight, only to one, he couldn't reach them. Not talking about just children, ages from 6 - 23. Bypassed dish for keys etc to put on mantle! I was a crazed person, lol

I didn't own tv for 3 years. I watch everything on my laptop and phone. So during Black Friday, I brought a 65 inch Tv that was on clearance from Best Buy. I waited 3 weeks before I took it out of the box and I when I finally turned it on. There were cracks in the screen and bad vertical lines going up and down the screen. I couldn't take it back b/c it was past the 14 days Best Buy return policy window! Sad to say, I was disappointed and lost my money. So now, I have to just throw the TV out. :( So, Overall if the TV isn't necessary I wouldn't buy it. Just my opinion. BTW love the fireplace, this is on my WISH List as well.

As an American living in the EU it's crazy to reflect on how much of our American architecture and interior design is just a facade. ceiling beams that offer no structural support. The concrete fireplace made of drywall. other examples are plastic siding, fake brick, etc. just an observation not an insult (sortof). Anyway, you naield this project.

100% give the poor guy a TV. But, you are skilled enough that you can hide it behind a painting that parts or rolls back, or flips up, or some other art or wainscoting with hidden seams that folds away. Dudes love hidden walls/doors/spaces, especially if you hook them up to an linear actuator that makes a 'whirring' sound and can be operated with a (hidden or remote) switch. Also, get him a secret drawer near where he usually sits where he can have a hidden gun locked up but quickly available. Everybody would be happy - you get views, and you get to give hubs a gift he will enjoy, and his man card gets two new notches.

When you are screwing the dry wall to the stud, you seem to be screwing into the top of the fire? (The black metal plate) I am doing something similar and wondered if this was OK... Do you know if build-in fire places allow for this where the plasterboard will be covering it?
@ruschchristian9039
@ruschchristian9039 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Melissa. Looks great, but I'm afraid that you might get cracks where the drywall boards meet on a stormy day which shakes your house. Andthe tape you used won't help to keep the seems closed. Drywall boards should always meet on a stud (vertically and horizontally) to create a sturdy construction. You will probably also run into trouble finding a wall mounting kit for a tv that can be mounted to the existing studs in your construction, maybe you need a wooden substructure that is mounted to the three studs in the middle (which will be hidden by the tv) which can then carry the weight of a big tv. I would like to suggest a rectangular box made of 2"x4" with extra support beams where the screws of the wall mounting kit go. And the whole thing covered by 1/2" plywood. Use long enough screws. Wall plugs for drywall are able to carry the weight of a tv but if you are using a wall mountig kit that allows to move the tv away from the wall and tilt it would create such a big force that the plugs can be pulled out, in particular - if I observed it right - because you used only a single layer of 12.5mm / 1/2" drywall board. I will keep my fingers crossed that nothing happens. All the best, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Germany. Chris

This looks great and love your videos. You have inspired me to do more DYI projects (especially the counter top). I’m new here for your channel. Just one piece of advice and please do not take it as criticism . . but it appeared you did not end your drywall seams on a stud. Hope it does not happen but it does open to the possibility of developing a crack as the house/walls settle. Maybe you knew or accounted for this we do not see in the video. But you’re awesome and keep creating all the new content.

[1] A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. 11 Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. 12 She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. 13 She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. 14 She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. 15 She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family and portions for her female servants. 16 She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. 17 She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. 18 She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. 19 In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. 20 She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. 21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet. 22 She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple. 23 Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land. 24 She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes. 25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. 26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. 27 She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. 28 Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 29 "Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all." 30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. 31 Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. Proverbs 31:10-31

We bought a house with a large fireplace with television hookups above the fireplace. The television ended up being too high to watch comfortably. We hung a mirror there instead and moved the television elsewhere. We now have moved and I miss having that large fireplace, even though we rarely used it because it's too hot where we live. I'm looking to build an electric fireplace in my living room, the electric fireplaces have a no-heat setting. That is nice, no more melted chocolate in our Christmas stockings.

Mounting a flat panel tv above a fireplace is not a good idea because heat will shorten the tv life. Water vapour coming from the fireplace will not be good for electronics weather it is sealed off very well , that’s just my opinion. You did an awesome job with your fireplace build congrats 🥳😁

Looks great! Good job. As a professional painter I do have one observation, minor though it may be concerning the project overall: Your caulk bead. The caulk needs to be run so that it penetrates, in one long line (or bead), into the crack you're filling. If you use your finger to smooth it out, a light touch is best. Also, that is not the place for a widescreen TV.

You could cut down on you filler material and sanding if you invested in a pin nailer. Just a thought if you don’t already own one.

thanks for this, I am considering a Dimplex electric fireplace myself for an upcoming reno. I didn't know there could be STEAM and dancing flames!

Get a TV. For movie's at least. They are much cheaper than they used to be.

How about NOT telling people what they should do. I can bet you don't want people telling you what you should get or shouldn't get. It's her home, her life....clearly she can do what she wants.

@@Arlene_DOTK Oh okay. Sorry it was a suggestion. Just found that my family saves a ton of money doing the at home movie thing. Nothing more was meant.

@@ImaginerImagines No need for apologies, but it wasn't a suggestion...you said "Get a TV". I just think we live in a culture where everyone feels it's okay to tell others what they should and shouldn't do. People need to be comfortable with the fact that not everyone is the same. What works for one person or a family will not always work for another. Thanks for the reply and clarification. Have a great weekend 🙂
