My friend. There are times when a person embarks on a project that is aligned with their profession. And then discovers that the project challenges his or her abilities to the point that, perhaps that "project" turns out to be something much greater. It's my opinion that, that's exactly what I just witnessed in this video. I think I just witnessed an extraordinary Master craftsman at work. Beyond that, all I can say is WOW!!! Keep pushing forward. You truly do have an incredible talent. Both in your ability to create, as well as your ability to teach others. 😀

Thank you very much for your kind words Joseph, you made my day! Yeah I do consider myself a good metalworker but this project and limiting myself with a mig welder definitely pushed my abilities and work ethic. I ended up putting in several "double shifts" in order to get this project done in a timely fashion but in the end, I think Rusty turned out great. Thank you very much for the watch and if you deem me worthy, I'd really appreciate it if you could share out my channel on your social media so I can help more people. A tip for grinding clean, crisp edges with the roloc. Put a rigid backing plate behind the abrasive disc instead of relying on just the rubber mount. I use a metal washer that I made to fit snug on the roloc thread and spin true. You'll be surprised at the difference it makes when you are trying to grind accurately. 👍

We were tempering our steel hardness samples today, and got some beautiful shades... maybe a bit of heat coloring? Something in the 200-250C range might be kind of Fox coloured. (Then clear coat, of course...)
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah there are lots of light/dark straws and browns to be had but I think hard to control on each polygon with a torch. If I had a big preheat oven, I could set it to a certain temp to get the whole fox to be a color and then maybe polish up sections. I was also thinking about using gun bluing too. Lots of options. Kinda leaning to a chemical rusting so it looks like that orange brown like a real fox. Thanks for the watch!

I’m currently working on a sitting Labrador that’s about 28” tall, made of 20ga steel and wow did I underestimate the time needed to complete it. 😅 I’m definitely doing it the hard way by using tin snips to cut it out and tig to weld it up. I’ve been working on the project (from modeling on the computer to welding) on and off for about 6 months (around 200hrs total.) Really like the way it’s looking and glad I’m doing it but wow am I getting exhausted.

Ya know there are a ton of different methods to get this done but I went with the free and easy way so people at home could try this. A way better way would be going to a waterjet or laser cutter and quickly cut out/transfer details. I have also seen people grind/score a line where the bend lines go and I have also seen people use cnc presses to accurately bend the exact angles. You could paint the steel and then get a cheap cnc laser to burn the details off leaving very exact lines to where the cuts and bens go too. Lots of different methods. Thanks for the watch!

Its a tricky little sculpture and I made it look easy but it was really challenging for me and pushed my skills further to say the least. Plus the amount of work needed was a lot, especially under my video schedule deadlines. Hang in there, don't give up. Take a look at the paper model and understand where the metal needs to be so you can bend it out or figure out what is needed. Good luck!

Very cool. I wonder if it might have been worth cutting out the strips, and then scoring the sheet metal on the side you were valley-folding, and then just welding them together.
@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 2 жыл бұрын
That might work on some pieces but most pieces had multiple polygons and it would be hard to cut out with out cutting into other polygons unless you used a plasma cutter/waterjet/laser. I might try another of these in the future and use thicker sheet which will work better with your suggestion. Thanks for the watch!

Yeah you totally could and it would save a ton of work but at a cost. I did it this way because most people don't have access to this equipment but I wanted to show it can be done. Just to let you know that I am still working on my low poly project. I did cut the steel parts on my CNC plasma cutter and I did add relief cuts on the bend lines. I got stuck, so I had to make the paper one so that I would have a better understand of the way the parts fit together. I hope to be welding it together this week. Thanks for the inspiration.

You could use the head as a mould if you were to produce multiples. Fill it with concrete. Cut tacks to remove. Then use it for angles

Just for other people they could spray some kind of plasticote or other barrier. Fill with concrete. Cut a few welds so the Fox is in two half’s. You now have a workable piece to do angles quickly. The original fox can be then tack welded back together so you keep the original. But the concrete version can just be a great template so you don’t even need to think about working out angles etc… the piece you made looks epic. Personally I’d let it weather and get some patina on it. Then clear coat it to lock in the art

@wayofthewrench
@wayofthewrench 2 жыл бұрын
There are pros and cons for both. Tig is cleaner but more heat and you now have no hands to hold the pieces because your holding the tig torch and filler rod. Mig is quick to tack up and allows for better heat control. This project took over 50 hours so I'm glad that I used MIG. I used Mig because my welding series teaches how to use the equipment and then a project to go with that theory. Tig and stick are still to come. Thanks for the watch!
