I'm not in school for welding. I have done it in High School back in the 80's but now I'm doing it on the side at my place of employment. I'm kind of learning through trial and error. I weld on a lot of thin and rusty steel. Trying to weld overhead, vertical and horizontal is a big challenge for me. I use a Miller Bobcat 225 diesel welder and trying to dial in my amperage settings is a challenge cause the dial only has numbers from 1 to 10. It doesn't literally show me my amperage setting. However. I have learned and actually used some of Bob's methods from his older videos. It would be great to see a video on setting a basic generator/welder with just a number dial. Keep up the good work. I'll be watching for more SMAW videos.

For my root I don’t start so far down on backing strap because I want the rod to make it past the middle part of the plate. So I try to stop at the top part of the plate and restart. Also I run slower at bottom of the plate so puddle can build up more because normally at the top of the plate the heat makes the weld come out higher

I’m 19 in welding school right now on a scholarship, $4,000 of the $4,250 will be paid for as long as I get certified in at least one position. COVID 19 cut my school year 9 weeks short and spring break turned to summer. Now we’re back for summer classes. Long story short, I have two days left of summer school to finish my 1 inch plate 3G cert. If I fail, It’s quite possible I’ll then owe $4,000 to the school; and since there wasn’t any time for a practice certification beforehand(like there normally is here), this is my only shot. Plates are cut and grinded up pretty, just need tacking and all the passes... wish me luck.

Enjoyed it very much. How thick in mm must the backing plate be. I enjoyed the half moon or U shaped welding teqnique in vertical.is a vertical up weld better than vertical down and why is that?
@GodslilRedneck23
@GodslilRedneck23 5 жыл бұрын
Duncan Mac Farlane for this one I used a 6.35mm thick piece but usually run a 9.5mm. For this process being used in a structural application vertical up is better because you get better penetration. On an open root you can run up or down depending on the electrode you’re using and the code you’re working to.

@GodslilRedneck23
@GodslilRedneck23 5 жыл бұрын
Phillip Gober I usually run the root and hot pass with no wait in between. Then maybe about 2-3 mins before doing the two interpasses and about 5-7 mins before starting the cap with a 2 min wait between each stringer on the cap.
@kf8575
@kf8575 5 жыл бұрын
Even if you were to leave it to cool right down so you could touch it wi a bare hand between passes, it will warp or distort. Its simply physics. As things heat up they expand, and as they cool down they contract. Nothing that you can do about it other than pre-stress it

Can you do a 1' plate test like that, ive tried and never succeed well with keeping the weld flat, its always shallow on the ends, i think because i dont put enough metal on the runoff tabs
@GodslilRedneck23
@GodslilRedneck23 5 жыл бұрын
patrick Flynn yes sir, I had to certify for the union on 1” plate 3G and 4G. 4G is definitely easier though. If it’s not laying flat it’s usually the run off tabs not being utilized enough. Another thing you can do is tack a couple small plates parallel with your bevel just like the run-in/run-out tabs. That’ll help keep you straight and true.

Just a question do you or do you not discard the eans of the plate 1/2" or so? I think for the bend test but maybe not for the visual inspection? Also what about grinding out the crater where you stopped and started?
@GodslilRedneck23
@GodslilRedneck23 5 жыл бұрын
RMTX 25 for a bend yes you start at the center and measure 1” either side of center, from there you measure 1-1/2” past the 1” mark. Those 1-1/2” sections are what get bent. The visual only applies to the welded plate the entire run on/run off tabs get cut off and are not inspected. You shouldn’t have any craters on your test plate. They have to be filled in to the entire cross section.

Little undercut on the right side of that root tie in (it happens to us all). Still a good weld though. Not trying to question your knowledge. But just to Make sure I heard correct or you meant what you said. A root opening of 3/16 to 9/16 with a backing strip? That’s new to me usually it’s 1/4 backing 1/4 gap +- 1/16 on 3/8 plate that is.

So if I’m testing NR232 on 1/2” material I need what root opening and bevel degree ?
@arcjunkiespodcast9253
@arcjunkiespodcast9253 2 жыл бұрын
I typically run a 3/8” root opening with a 60° included angle, bevel each plate at 30°. When running NR232 or NR233 point slightly down into the puddle while traveling in the vertical direction. If you get ahead of the puddle, the wire tends to burn right through the plate.

Does AWS specify that you have to weld uphill or downhill? I had an instructor at my school say you can weld down hill, and another Instructor says it's only uphill? So I don't know what aws requires? Also is it the same requirements for mig?

Alex, AWS publishes many codes and other standards. In some sutuations with the proper electrode it may be totally acceptable to weld downhill. In this situation since he is using a 2015 D1.1 PREQUALIFIED procedure he is limited by clause 3.7.1 which states "The progression for all passes in vertical position welding shall be upward, with the following exceptions: (1) Undercut may be repaired vertically downwards when preheat is in conformance with table 3.3 but not lower than 70 degrees. (2) when tubular products are welded, the progression of vertical welding may be upwards or downwards, but only in the direction(s) for which the welder is qualified." In the new 2020 edition of AWS D1.1 this has moved to 5.8.1.1

AWS does not specify (or limit) what type of bead you can use for the test. Any limitations would be found in the Welding Procedure Specification
