I would like to see bob do a long episode on the welding procedures and consumables used for welding dissimilar metals, medium to high carbon steel, and High Strength Low Alloy steels. It's a topic that Jody has covered in a scattering of videos but I would like to see how bob would present the information to us. Love the channel guys!!

I'm a shipbuilder and FCAW is pretty much all we use. There's quite a few things to improve on this video, most of all - cold starting in the root like that is never a good idea. For weld tests that impose a zero tool mark policy and require a 'stop - start' the trick is to barely stop, 'of the trigger, on the trigger', eliminating the potential for inclusion or lack of fusion. On the job it's common practice to start the run on top of your bead and lead the pool down in to the root, a quick grind post weld to remove your stop start 'bump'. The technique varies with wires. 14hd fluxofil is fantastic, my favourite, gives a very flat bead with straight stringers. Different projects adhere to different wires but i would recommend you trying a roll of 14hd, you'll like it.

Your comment is a couple years old, but I'm in my 3nd week of welding. We are going 3G practice and I am having a lot of trouble with the 3/8 root pass. I see people heating their plates but thats the second semester class. I've done a few good root passes and mess up on the next passes, but the most challenging is the root. What would you advise a beginner. I am using .35 wire at 135 WFS and running 19.6 V.

You guys should do a video on 3g/4g with .072 innershield. .045 is a good shop wire but most welders in the field are gonna be running an inner shield wire which isn’t as forgiving as .045.

ftownmarine from what I’ve done with innershield NR233 .072 I would keep my settings around 100-110ipm and about 19Volts for 3G and for 4G I would go about 130-150ipm and 20-21Volts

One thing I learned first hand is with bigger wire, you have to turn the wire down and run slower, I did my D1.1 cert test with .045 wire and at my job we use Lincoln 1/16" wire

When is a weave not a stringer and vice versa? I think I would have put a very quick stringer in just before the final run and so not felt the need to weave on that final run... There's a relaxed feeling when you know the last run does not need to 'work' to be finishing the cap. It covers the previous run (and its narrower size).... and also goes nicely onto the right hand side plate without there being any need to weave to do so... In short. One quick 'no weave at all' stringer just before the last? Good idea or not? eg At 8:27 it sure looks pretty wide to be wanting to put on just one more.

Curious, do you ever increase the heat since the weld is now thicker? A bit of overkill on this demonstration but that would hold the wall on fort knox. Rows of quarters just stacked like a bankers till. I do learn a lot like not getting in a hurry to take "slag" off... It's the little things like that that keeps them hiring you back... If it were only the neighbors kitchen cabinet hinge.. I would bring my stick welder and run 7018 on first pass without brushing area off. Then put the 100018 over it to hard face it so the cabinet board has to swing instead of the hing/LOL, I jokes

Remove the back plate, and lets see if you really can weld. If you are a welder, you should have no problem welding this, without backing. In almost every american video, they use this method, but in real life you can't use this everywhere. And I would like to see the back side, so that I can see the penetration.
