I took a WABO (Washington Board) 1" unlimited 3G FCAW this week. No downhill root, no mig root, 3/8" backer, no grinding on root but grinding was allowed on subsequent passes. Fairly lenient test. But I want to say thanks, this video gave me a strategy. My root went in like shit but I recovered on my hot pass. Then middle left, middle right. This video definitely gave me a good strategy. I just watched the puddle work it's way up on the plate from mid. Wasn't a perfect test, but it passed the bend with flying colors. Thanks

Only one problem........ they don't let you grind or use a wire wheel when we test. They definitely won't let us grind a Cap pass down and then re-weld it....but it looks great... In the field it's another story, you can grind and wire wheel as much as you have to.....Excellent video....Let's face it man most people grinding or not couldn't make it look as good as yours in the end.

How long do you let the metal sit before starting each pass? Thanks for the video.
@sorsaasefa76602 жыл бұрын
About every 8-10 passes you let the metal cool down. As for each pass you don’t really need to wait at all, just make sure to clean it well every pass. I would suggest more stringers than weaves as it’s easier to control the puddle without running over previous slag, which might fail you a bend test.

How long to wait between each pass, ive had problems with it being too hot. And ive got a test soon for a job
@sorsaasefa76602 жыл бұрын
Just wait about 5-10 minutes between every 8-10 passes. Just also look for the arc gouging out the metal more than usual, that’s usually a sign that it’s too hot and you might need to wait or turn your voltage down. At the cap, make sure to let the piece cool down as much as you can and to turn down your setting so that you don’t get undercut. Hopefully this information is somewhat useful to you.

@alexfriestad90212 жыл бұрын
why do you change to flux core instead of mig welding the whole thing?
@sorsaasefa76602 жыл бұрын
The whole point of the video is 3g flux welding. He uses MIG for the root instead of flux because it’s gonna to leave a lot of slag on the back side of the weld. You can still flux the root, but you’d need to back grind it to remove the slag and root weld before caping it off with a single pass.

Straight line stringers are easier when u have to weld for 10-12 hours a day. Easier to be consistent to 80% of us but oscillating works for some.
@sorsaasefa76602 жыл бұрын
Very true, and it gives you a better chance to pass a bend test if you’re not comfortable with doing oscillations, and worry about running over previous slag.

What speed and heat do you run your caps?
@jc93763 жыл бұрын
If you're doing a test where the cap is removed after it passes a visual inspection (bend test) you can turn your settings lower so that you don't get any undercut on your cap. You don't need to worry about penetration too much on your cap and depending on the position and your level of experience you can easily get undercut that may cause you to fail. Run slow beads on your cap to ensure you fill in any undercut you may or may not be creating.
@sorsaasefa76602 жыл бұрын
