My instructors keep telling me that I need more build up on the inside of the pipe for my root pass. But none of them can actually show me how to do it themselves.

This is a personal preference. I personally feel more comfortable looking through the inside of the pipe at a slight angle so I can see the wire and the inside of the weld pool on bottom. I have also looked at it from the outside while on bottom as well but it seems to take a longer to complete the weld.
@Welddotcom11 жыл бұрын
That is correct. Move up on the bevel and lengthen the arc to decrease amperage and snap out of it. Since you are using a manual torch you may post shield with argon.

Oh man, this reminds me for my 6g exam! 45° 60mm pipe 3mm thickness and the top highness of thah pipe was same level as my eyes. You can't use wall to lean on or some other support. There are just that pipe, your shaking hands and three people watching your agony :) But I did it.... almost perfect. Love your videos, because no matter what experience I have, every time I learn something new and interesting.... which makes me better TIGer ;)

Lead angle on any open root pass regardless of position may vary. 0-15 is usually for structural fillet joints. I have not had much luck with a 0 - 15 degree angle getting the open root pass to progress (flow) upward. Try using the 25 - 45 lead angle and keep the wire on the leading edge of the pool for complete fusion and reinforcement.

I sure would like to thank you for the informative video. I've been a welder for over 20 years and I can't seem to pass the 6G carbon test. I'm AWS 6G certified, (I paid for that waste of money) but when I go to take the test my root is ok but my hot pass and stick cover suck! I have my own 200 amp tig rig, I'm now going to get a DC power source that has finite controls. Practice, practice, practice. I know I can do it and I'm sure by watching a few more of your videos. Thanks again, keep it up!

BOB is the REAL “Mr. TIG”. Bob is a real bad ass old timer. Everything he says makes sense and has wisdom, no bullshit. He actually HELPS for cert. prep and practice. This other white haired pretender is a baby sitter. He is an insult to most people’s intelligence. A bullshitter. Its almost like there’s a bunch of five-year-olds watching and he tries to interpret actual welding stuff; or for people who have no capacity for welding, people who never actually going to get in the industry or have zero intention of actually getting a welding CERT. (he talks like he’s teaching ABC’s to people that can’t speak yet.). Other people must feel the same; never see that white haired baby feeder anymore. The new weld.com videos are bad ass! Thanks Bob!

I have a question. What good is it to have a big gap like in this video vs having a tighter gap. Also is it better to have a landing on the bevel??. Thank you Mr tig
@Welddotcom10 жыл бұрын
As explained in the beginning of the video, everybody has a preference of fit-up. I like to use the wide gap and root face to draw reinforcement to the inside of the pipe and weld faster. The much slower method would be feathered edges and a key-hole approach which I find harder to make a consistent bead with. The key-hole I usually do on stainless and nickel based allows. Feeding the wire from the outside of a bevel on the bottom of a pipe weld has never been fun for me if I want good reinforcement. Again, there are many options and variables to produce this weld. What are the end results / code specs? What does the procedure call for? These may determine or stipulate how it is to be welded. Let us know on the Weld.com forum! weld.com/index.php/Weekend-Warrior-Welding-Forum/categories.html

@lascoob9709 жыл бұрын
KRS 1 no you can walk the cup to.... but keyhole a pipe is stupid. alot of time you have to feed the bead looking through the top of the gap. key holing will screw you in a pipe rack or heater... you simply can't do it. got to feed the wire through the gap . most pipe welding in the feild is done in extremely tight spots.

It all depends who you are testing for. Ingels who is a ship building company tests on 5in schedule 40, NBS (National Boiler Sevices) tests on 2in heavy wall tube that must be tacked in a simulated fixture. Some pipeline companies will test between 6in and 24in piping. I hope this helps alittle.
