Welded Aluminum Boat Build FROM SCRATCH - Part 2 - FINISHED BOAT

In Part 2 I'm wrapping up my custom 12' flat bottom build. Welding and boat building is a hobby of mine, and something I love to do so sharing it on my channel is super fun for me. Motor: 2009 Mercury 30/25 Jet, 21 mph on plane with two people.

Very nice coming along great. When I started watching video was excited to see how you measure and cut the curve on the front deck you passed over that detail but was able to see finished floor looks great

I cut a piece of similar shape to get it within an inch. Then I take a spacer and trace the actual shape onto the stencil to be cut and transferred to the floor piece. I’ll try to cover it better when doing the wood deck for my big boat build! Otherwise I learned tons about using a spacer from the Timmy Turtle boat build series!

Since you missed out on keeping the battery under the front deck (I was surprised you didn’t just add a 1x2 tube under the aluminum to increase the height), I would consider making an aluminum battery box to contain it. That would protect the battery and you could carpet it as well. Easier to check the condition of the battery as compared to being under the deck anyway plus with a hinged lid you don’t lose flat space. You might find it a handy foot rest.

That definitely could have worked! I actually love how it ended up working out because the space under the stowed trolling motor where the battery is now was sort of useless, and it gives me space back under the deck to store life jackets and other stuff. Happy all around!

What does it draft empty? Do you add any float foam? Came out really nice

Probably floats in a few inches. Should run through 3-4” with a couple people. It has foam under the floor the whole way.

Greetings Tom, the camera does add mass. If you didn't say that was a 12' boat, I would have thought 14' easily. Does a jet boat motor reverse via some door actuator redirecting the output?

It’s a 12’ boat that doesn’t exist from a factory dimension wise. That’s why it’s deceiving. Reverse on an outboard jet is terrible, but works well enough. There’s a shift gate to redirect most the water

Your heavy duty winch. Do you have any videos on that? I would like to make one but don't know what motor/90 degree worm gear to choose

The anchor winch? On this boat I just use the MinnKota Deckhand 40 which pulls 40# of anchor at a good speed. Works great for a smaller boat like this. My big boat will get a winch that can pull 100#, but I just buy the whole kit from Rapid Winches (you can search their page on FaceBook).

@@benromano3300 the Rapid Winch is a friend of mine’s business. Basically the same motor and gearbox as a the River Larry and much less money. I’ve owned them both on river boats and happy with both. If you’re only pulling 40# then I’d go deckhand 40. If you might need more then the heavier duty winch will be work it, and it usually includes the tower for around $800.

@@benromano3300 welcome! I ended up just buying one from Rapid Winches. Something like $150-$200. If you can weld it you’ll do it cheaper, but I just didn’t time.

Tom i got a question for you. I noticed you didnt put a bilge pump on this boat and im just curious as to why?

Being such a small boat and having the bilge area open it could be bailed out quickly if caught in the rain. It obviously would never hurt to have a bilge in there, but I never leave it in the water and most fishing trips are just a quick few hours when the weather is pleasant.

@@cobybooth1841 It's the area near the drain plug where water usually wants to pool...the best place to install the bilge pump to remove water in the hull.

What a build!!! How does the title work with a self build boat? I know with cars some states let you do a garage build title for hotrods and things. Just curious how this works qith a boat.

Michigan is pretty straight forward. Bring the Secretary of State (aka DMV) all the receipts of the materials to show sales taxes were paid and they issue it a new Hull ID number. Straight forward when the boat is for yourself. Lots more comes into play when building to sell.

How much would something like this cost?

I'm guessing it would have somewhere around 80 hours into the build, and probably $2000 to $3000 in materials...so in the $6,000 to $7,000 range before factoring in paint, flooring, motor, etc.

It’s looking sweet! Just flipped it to weld the bottom seams. Should be done with welding on it this week. Part 1 of that build is coming soon so stay tuned!
