Is that a two-way over there next to Victor's nameplate? We get an annual raise plus a bonus based on company profits and it's substantial. This is allowing me to put away money for retirement and to set up my welding shop. You're the real deal-too many know nothings and "hey learn with me" channels. There are a few good welders with field/fab experience and a sane channel, and you are one. Product pushers the rest of the lot.

Real talk Chris. Good practical video as always. Tried commenting on that last millscale video but i guess it never posted. I agree with everything, especially that inspectors should be welders/retired. Always good information portrayed here, everyone new to the field or young guys should pay good attention, the videos on this channel are real life, real talk. I've welded nuclear shutdowns, bridges, pipeline, compressor stations, everything between. I just turned 30, been at this since I graduated high-school. So for the young guys just coming into it, pay attention, humble yourself, and listen to the guys on your jobsite like Chris who been around the block. The experience passed down is invaluable. See you on the next one man.

Brother you’re just killing it. Thanks for spreading the word and reeling the future welders in. Also thanks for not faking the funk!!! A lot of this channels and schools are selling a fake dream. There is no other way to learn other than make the mistakes and learn what we can get away with. One question? How the heck do you have all this time to make videos on the daily. This is so time consuming. I don’t think people understand the thought process to make such informative videos. Like I said before, we can make a video if you’d like, and I can teach you how to record the puddle. Salute brother. And stay blessed.

I’m a structural welding/bolting inspector as well as other structural certifications concrete testing, masonry etc. I got my first certification at 19 and I’m 28yrs old now. Never had a welding career before hand. I’ve done lots of commercial buildings, custom homes and more. Experienced welders are very prideful in their work and rightfully so. Most of the time they really do understand the process and what needs to be done to get the job completed. I will say though that’s not always that case as I’ve come across individuals that claim that’s the way they’ve been doing it for 20+ yrs and it’s not always what’s up to code or they don’t know how to read plans… As an inspector you have to have to understand our point of view that our job is to make sure everything meets qualified procedures and approved plans. When something god forbidden happens in a structural failure it’s our butts that have to answer to why it was not done up to code/plans. We have a career and a future to look after as well. 99.99% of the time I get along with every millwright/welder on the job and we all understand we’re just doing our jobs. Plenty of times I know I annoy them with little things here and there but that’s just me making sure my company does not have anything come back to us down the road. Really respect what you do, your channel and bringing us all incredible information on Financial Fitness. I found you through Ninja and super happy i did. Keep it up we all appreciate it!

I agree with you on the idea that you must have been through being a welder/fitter/fabricator before becoming a welding inspector. I have been welding and fabricating for 18yrs now and just became a c.w.i. 4yrs ago but I want to say that just because someone has been welding for 25yrs doesn't mean that they are a good welder. Facts ! And the same for a welding inspector, it doesn't mean he's a good top of the line inspector. Our job is to uphold the code standards and report our findings along with the n.d.t. testing we do. So if we tell a welder their stuff looks like crap and to fix it then it needs to be done. The code allows for a a lot of tolerance when laying beads and the profiles but we are just trying to make sure we sign off on quality work that will eventually be something your family or mine will be staying in or crossing a bridge that I signed off on saying your welds were sound.

Agreed, I went into quality assurance after 30+ years of a combination of welding, machine work, tool and die, then a sales engineer to go after new work for my employer and be able to look at customer drawings to eval and say yes we can do this. Now as a quallity/warranty "engineer" for the auto industry all of that culminates into the job I have now. So yes, inspectors should be either retired tradesman or in the latter part of their time on the job. Good topic Chris!!!

Amen on the comment of inspectors not having to know how to weld,, I've said that my whole career of 50+ yrs of welding,,, now back in the day of my early days ALL the inspectors were x-welders, this seemed to change sometime in the 70's. Then they came out that you had to have all the certs,, 510, 570, 658 all that crap. The best inspectors were always the x welders with the certs,, at least they had some common sense.

man I think that electrolytic cleaners are more then capable of cleaning mill scale. It needs some work when its greasy. But carbon fiber brushes with phosphoric acid break down the mil-scale to a layer mere thousandths of an inch thick (3 strokes with a old brillo pad), so long its not greasy. Experiments that used my own DIY alkaline cleaner on a carbon brush, followed by the acid cleaner, showed me that you can get rid of ALOT of greasy mill scale fast and clean with this setup. I feel like there is a small process problem right now because of grease, but that its possible to use the correct tools to clean mill scale fast with safe chemistry to get rid of TONS of grinding.

yeah but I found the sodium hydroxide carbonate mix on a carbon brush (all you need is a threaded brass rod and one of those brushes, 3/8-28 works for a 10mm chinese one, with a lug on the other side. when you go over the rusty stuff, the alkali mixture will get rid of the red rust and leave the black rust in place. but then you rinse it, and use the brand name electrocleaner, and it gets rid of it pretty good. If you just use the brand name electrocleaner it ends up super spotty and its rather slow at removing mill scale thats substantial. 10VAC is enough, the brush resistance is roughly 1/2 a ohm, plus maybe 0.05 for your wiring.. if you keep it damp a 12VAC transformer works fine. After your done it leaves a bit of a patina that will come off quickly with very light scrubbing with a brillo pad (does not need to be sharp). Stainless steel comes out beatiful form the electrocleaners, but I would say on a moderately dirt piece of mild with the correct voltage/mix it does 90% of the work for you without grinders. just need a drip tray and bottles of either citric or vinegar and baking soda to neutralize the various solutions, plug a third of distilled water. I try to keep grinding to a minimum, I see what happens to people exposed to too much of that dust, ima go out and say that wearing the mask all the time is wishful thinking... ppl need to invent better methods. the alkali seems to do nothing compared to the commercial fluid, but I thnk it gets grease way better then the acid mix. Sounds like a pain but if you get a good drip tray and some good spray bottles it damn better then the grinder or fuckin dip tanks since its fast. I know the vinegar trick but 24 hours lol thats not realistic. u need tactical stuff @@TaylorWelding

Whoa Cowboy, crowding that mic and blowing out the top end of the fidelity. I'm sure you picked that up on editing-but of course there's now cleaning up crunched audio. Spoken differently: you're blowing holes in your audio, down 10 (back up a few inches). But hey those mic's are great on your shirt or lapel as you've been using 'em.

I am a welding inspector and have heard this argument 1000 times before and I sympathize with that opinion but IMO its incorrect. Having a history of being a welder beyond making you relatable, and isn't an asset to an inspectors skill set. The knowledge and skillset to pass xray on pipe is not helpful when inspecting thermite welding on rail, or gantry SAW automated systems to weld bulbars on ships or doing a QA review of procedures and certification. So yes it's very frustrating when you run into an inspector who comes from a different background, or maybe they are just bad. We get it too, two of my last QC jobs have had QA and Owners reps inspect 100% and they're CWIs, plus auditors who can come from any background, we get it. But as you said you don't like memorizing codes and procedures, you don't care about metallurgy and your comments indicate you don't care about procedures because you've been "doing it this way for 20 years." So we're required to ensure codes and procedures, because for every idiot CWI you've run into anecdotally, I could match an overconfident welder who's been doing it wrongly for 20 years, and I've got the reports to prove it ;)

You show a complete lack of knowledge about welding inspection. Welding inspection is just that, INSPECTION. It is NOT the Welding Inspectors job to tell any welder HOW TO WELD, that is ABSOLUTELY the job of the CONTRACTOR's SUPERVISION. The Welding Inspector is a trade in and of itself. The Welding Inspector is skilled at identifying DISCONTINUITIES and then quantifying them based on Code or specification acceptance criteria. This DOES NOT require that we inspector be an "Expert" welder. If you can't make a acceptable weld, it is NOT the inspector's fault.

If it were a situation where lives are on the line, I'd surely rather have someone disconnected from the effort of making sure it's done right, decide when it's right. We've all said, "Good enough."
