How about an interview with the father-in-law and his perception on welding and how he got started, etc.

That bed is simple and effective can’t go wrong. I like how he has back up acetylene and oxegen. Nothing worse than running out on a cut. Thanks for sharing brother

It's interesting how your rigs are so different than what we use up here in Alberta and how they are used. There are generally two types, the deck trucks. i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NTM0WDgwMA==/z/SUQAAOSwFGNWRnVR/$_59.JPG Generally they have standing boxes on each side with storage up in between the boxes where a Drag-up Fuel Tank and a junk box is placed. Stands, tops, bevelers, ect. Welders are often on a removeable frame for use on pipeline sloops or off road buggies. Pipe liners will have torch bottles and hoses on the lift off welder frame for sloop work. Small boxes under the rear work table. Toll box size varies depending on the type of work done. There is very little wasted space along the truck frames. The older trucks used to have fuel tanks outside the frames that limited the tool box size. Now they are between the frame allowing for larger cabinets. Some guys carry a small fab table to insulate them from welder vibratons. Having the welder over the wheels lets you move weight off the front axel by placing the welder ahead or back as needed. They are often set to the passenger side to equalize the load balance left to right. And the ones in pickup beds we call "Car Rig-ups". i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NDg1WDgwMA==/z/gF8AAOSwl9BWHWoP/$_35.JPG These are used more on pipelines and pipe fabrication as fewer tools are needed. The welders roll back when your working and roll forwards and lock for travel on the road. These rigups are lightest and can be put on single wheel trucks.

Does the acetylene bottles get hot being right behind the machine?

@Jacob Schofield -- Curious what you think you have invested in your flatbed that you built vs actually purchasing a pipeline welding bed? Just trying to weigh the cost\time ratio. I like the idea of building one but I have never built a flatbed for a truck.

So is this set up for pipeline specifically ? I’m really trying to figure out a good build for all around fabrication work. And basically no “pipeline” stuff. Of course I can weld pipe and if I need to for a job I have no problem doing so, but I don’t want a pipeliner build, this style bed seems to be a really good set up to build off of to go that route

Do u ever seen anyone running the Lincoln rangers? Just got one, think it's nice not trying to pipeline with it but what is some of the differences in the pipeline machines
@amanwithouthope9475
@amanwithouthope9475 3 жыл бұрын
They're just good ol machines depending on the type you have my uncle has a "lincoln blackface" and it's not as good as the "red face" because the copper wiring is better for the machine instead of the aluminum in the "blackface" but they're just a stick welder and a generator while the ranger is a multiprocess and so their is no need for a pipeliner to have a multiprocess machine. I'm not a expert though so don't quote me. -chad

I was looking to buy a Ranger, ended up with a '66 Redface. #1. Air-cooled lawnmower engine vs liquid-cooled Army jeep engine. #2. 1.6 quarts of oil vs 5 quarts oil. #3. Longevity was important to me. After 3000 hours the Air-cooled welders are on borrowed time. My SA200 redlines at 1500rpm, and barely a high idle while welding, vs 3600rpm. SA200 will last 2 weeks short of forever. #4. KISS... Keep it simple, stupid. No circuit boards to crack or burn out, no EFI , no computer crap. Simple, reliable, and le$$ money. My 2 cents.

@Chris Jones, I worked pipelines for thirty-five years. Retired now. I ran SA200s, SA250s, and a couple of Commander 400s. I wouldn't own another Commander, but the aforementioned we're awesome! That said, my son bought me a Lincoln Ranger 330GXT last year, so I could teach him to weld. My old buddy John ran a Ranger 250 on pipelines years ago and he loved it. He could weld anything, including Aluminum, the 7/32"-6010, AC/DC, CC/CV...all day long! Considering that, I told my son that the ....Ranger was capable of welding any process, with a fraction of the weight (550 pounds vs 1000 pounds+) and overall signature. I would rather have the traditional 'pipeline' machine for longevity, but this Ranger machine has the best welding qualities I have ever seen! I love this little welder! My two cents. 🖐️ Have fun, stay safe! 👈👍

@tantrobusb9
@tantrobusb9 5 жыл бұрын
All depends on what rod it is, pipeline rods don't need to be in the oven. Some rod do need to be in an oven
@chrisjones6165
@chrisjones6165 5 жыл бұрын
7018 will run if you keep em dry but are not acceptable for code work. Wanna say it's 2hrs they can be out of rod oven till then need rebaked at 350° or something like that. Not sure on time or temps but do know it's code that they must be kept in oven or in fresh 50lb hermetically sealed container. That's only for low hydrogen rods that I know of.
