Hard to believe when I went to welding school in 1973 that we learned how to weld pipe by putting a 6010 root pass in and low hydrogen the rest of the way isn't it unreal that things are still done the same way 50 years later. What if your doctor or dentist did things exactly the same way they did 50 years ago

I failed one. 3/16” root gap, top pipe had no bevel it was flat and there was a steep bevel on the bottom pipe w no land. Restriction plate on top. Root was to be performed with a 3/32 7018🤯. Top pipe was thicker than the bottom pipe. Both had an OD of 6”.

I know plenty of welding inspectors would never let you grind a groove in the pipe to cap it.Years ago we used to be able to file our edges of our caps to dress it up, but for years now you can't put a file on it at all.

@lawrencechapman8394 Жыл бұрын
I grind the guide line lightly just between the inside of the bevel and the bead. That way, I’m not causing any damage or integrity issue to the pipe outside of the beveled/groove region. The line is in the weld essentially and then gets absorbed back with the cover up. That was exactly how CWI taught me to do it. I guess if I run into the ones who won’t let me do it way then I’ll figure something out.

Get that Rod Between the pipe make the gap. Tac one side. Before you weld the other tac Put the spacer back in and hit the pipe together to close the gap because when you tac one side it begins to change shape And bend so you gotta make sure you get out back in the same gap or else half your pipe gonna be wider so make sure you get that gap closed on the Tac and you good to go

He's using a flicking back/forth technique due to the digging arc of the 6010 cellulose electrode. Some people have a more pronounced back/Firth flick while using cellulose electrodes. When welding a clean joint with no gap and a large land, it's not so much needed, but when running a gap and thin land on pipe, the digging arc of the cellulose electrodes can cause the keyhole to blow out.

I run a little cooler on the root. Found in the bend tests...too much "whipping" in the root allows our atmosphere to enter the molten puddle. Not ok! So, I make a small circle, bumping each wall. Of course, pointing the rod either ahead/behind depending on root opening. That breaks down the walls..."juust right"...like Goldy Locks says it.
