Thank you for showing the finished weld. There are those on here that like to talk about how to do it but never show a close up on the work when it’s done. Nice job welding and nice job on the video.

just in time! that pro tip when doing the fill & cap with 7018 is exactly what we are facing, our instructor told us that we should always point our rod at the center of the pipe, but as we do that the bottom weld with the 7018 always sags, no matter how fast we do our travel, thanks for that!

ISO 9606-1 weld tests allow the use of a grinder on the root string only. I don't know how it works job to job but the International test allows the grinder regardless of what the tester says. Know your rights guys, it can make a difference. Some great tips as usual Jody, they make the videos very rewatchable (depending on where a fella is on the learning curve)...and Andrew is a Jedi level pipe welder. Thank you.

Hi Jody, from the age of 15 starting my apprenticeship only allowed to use hammer and chisel to cut back for root … as I progressed worked with a journey man who also taught me not to use the grinder very much as he always said we get paid for putting metal in not taking it out … we were on piece work then … the good old days 🇬🇧👍 Sorry forgot to say the weld looked very good smooth operator that’s what we get paid for.

I wish my weld puddle was that smooth this week! Currently welding tube’s and square’s in Swiss outside on a parkinglot with conarc elektrodes and basic machine, sticks barely start or get stuck, cuts out everttime 😭😂

I welded miles and miles of pipeline back when I was a youngster. One job I was on in New Mexico I burned probably several tons of rod . We were welding a pipe that was 90 feet across and 3 inches thick. It was a mine shaft that went 600 feet into the ground. Quite an interesting job that was. Most of the welders were burning 1/8 rod and would take 12 hours or more to do an 8 foot section. I would burn 1/4 inch rod and do 4 - 8 foot sections in my 12 hour shift. All the welders hated me but the boss paid me 4 times what he paid the other welders. So I didn't care what they thought. We were getting paid by the hour but I knew the man that had the contract and he took good care of me. Fun, fun, fun.....

Well I dont have any videos like that yet..but I would say expect to be by yourself for hours at a time welding. expect to be frustrated sometimes but just know that its normal not to make progress every single day. sometimes its 2 steps forward one step back...but overall you are still making progress. pay attention, learn the fundamentals, make sound welds first, then make them pretty. good luck

105 with the 1/8 7018? Seems kinda cold I’d be worried about leaving slag or a hollow head especially if after you grind your root it’s narrow. Any thoughts?

Hey man loved the video. I have a question for you. I'm 14 years old living in UK and I do blacksmithing and welding jobs. I want to start practicing open root in 3g and eventually pipe. But my little inverter can't run 6010. 6010 rated machines here cost at least 4 grand. My question is can I use a 6011 for open root joints like pipe and all that? Thanks for the help
@jeffsmith3941
@jeffsmith3941 10 ай бұрын
Hey brother I hope I’m not too late to help you. The short answer is yes you can run a root pass with 6011, the slag will be more difficult to get off and the arc won’t be as stable, it will however work.
@charlesb4267

I was surprised at the 105 amp setting for the 1/8 7018, I was curious if that was done to avoid the potential of burning through the root pass and also reducing the buildup for that pass or does that machine tend to run rods hot for the setting ?
