I do believe me i know about bat fit ups had to weld a 3/8 gap in one side and a 1/16 in the other one time 24in pipe made it work but hard but yes you are right they should teach different scenarios

Eh kind of. If your fit isn't completely jacked you can always swap to different wire size through the weld to accommodate for tight spots or loose spots.

Good technique if you have a perfect fit and gap. The way the fits are now days that’s why a lot of welders go to the backfeed method to compensate for uneven root gaps or high low in the pipe in the field. Not taking anything away from the man welding he was slick.

damn straight, real life dont throw gravy work at you very often. that said, to get a good idea of the technique and the principles a gravy setup doesnt let you get distracted from what the idea/process is. now someone will know how they can hit some speed in the gravy spots and slow down around the corner where fitment went south for whatever reason

It’s so cool to see how many different techniques there are to achieve the same goal. Not to mention taking pride in a ones work and sharing it for people to learn from. I will have to experiment with this in the future. I don’t weld pipe but I do open root plate welding while fabricating things. I always preferred running hot with a tighter gap, which most other people seemed to run colder with a big gap. It’s nice to see how well running hot can work with the right skills 👍🏻. Thanks so much for sharing.

It's just as you say. I like to play, too. Big gaps of wire between the bevels. But it takes a long time to get through the root. and most companies want and pay for fast work. That's why I like to use the lay wire technique. And even with stainless steel, 1 pass through the cap and the root. And we all know over time that if there's a fused edge. X-rays are always OK. X-rays don't decide whether the root is 1 or 3 millimeters.

Why did he say not to feed while lay wiring? That’s like the most important thing you can do while lay wiring because if you have the ability to feed wire you know without a doubt you are breaking everything down. If it’s not breaking down, the puddle won’t accept more wire without getting bigger. If you keep the same size puddle while feeding a little wire you know you are getting reinforcement on the inside.

How do you battle Suckback when you laywire? Tig seems like it works by pulling the puddle out of the base metal, its not just melting it. It looks like the ark is coming from the torch to the metal but since Tig is Dcen then the electric loop is backwards so its coming from the metal and jumping to the tungsten. I think.

@bradvincet1848
@bradvincet1848 11 ай бұрын
Notice they didn't do this in the 5G position? You would have suck-back on the bottom curves. All you need is a gap that matches the wire size with no hi-lo issues and you wouldn't need all that heat and guessing what the other side looks like.

Lay wire is all I or anyone I know uses. I think back feeding is a down south thing. Use it in all positions, match filler wire size to your gap size. Using a pointed tungsten works beautifully, but that's personal preference. I generally run closer to 125 amps. Never had issues, passed many many X-rays, consistent 1/16" root reinforcement.

Yes, if you have a thicker pipe schedule it is better to use more amps. Also bigger diameter of pipe adds more amperage. With a 1/8 gap and rod I usually am at 125 on schedule 40 6".

Actually i will correct you on the technique where you made the tungstens point flat. The electrons on the tungsten will jump from a 90* angle to the base material where there is the least resistance/where the electrons can jump to the material the easiest. on a sharp tungsten this happens higher up the tungsten therefore making the arc wider. With a flat pointed tungsten the electrons will jump from a lower point on the tungsten. Both with a 90* angle. So the conclusion is that the flat pointed tungsten gives a thinner, more penetrating arc than the sharp one.
@dalesimonds

Hey Dave, I'm a fan of your work. Your videos on how to create a template for branch connections are the best I've seen on KZbin. It helped me immensely.

He says keep the torch Angle straight in, but it really seems in the video that he is using a bit of a forward angle on the torch. Or am I just seeing things ?
