Having done something like this before (wine cellar), garden rope light into a routed wooden surround just under the glass is a good option, or these days LED strips. Gives uniform light down the well all the way round and no glare, also has the effect the wood looks like part of the support frame for the glass. Just food for thought, great job as always though!

Gavin - 12 Garden Lighting. Great video again - always entertaining. Collingwood Stainless Steel Universal lights work 'well' in wells. Constant current, remote driver. 3m of cable. I served my apprenticeship at BA many years ago with lots of old boys who had worked on flying boats before the war - if you ever dropped a tool while working on a wing or up in the tail they would always say 'Lucky you don't work on fucking flying boats....' They always tied their tools on a length of string... which was fun to cut behind their backs....

Id have suggested a tube painted black across the well mounted onto the bottom of the ring with a t point in the center allowing a waterproof pendent to be lowered further down into the well. If I were the owner Id be tempted to get a grabber on a long rope and see if there are any coins or such in the well as given its age there must likely be something there.

If you ever do something similar guys, the one thing you don't have to worry about is a round cover falling through the hole - the reason manhole covers are round is they cannot fall through the hole, as no matter what "across" you take, it's always the diameter which is always bigger than the diameter of the hole. Rectangular covers, yeah, you'll lose those in an instant.

Instead of pond lights, a pair of those GU10 "wedge" or conical style luminaires might have looked good here. The type people stick either side of their front door shining down the brickwork. I'd have gone for smaller, low voltage ones maybe? Run some SELV cables and have a power supply under the plinth?
@dsesuk4 жыл бұрын
I'd have preferred SELV myself and the original option I presented was based on MR16 fittings which is what I normally use for garden lighting. The trouble is, there aren't a lot of MR11/MR16 units out there, so then you're looking at something bespoke where the LED is built into the case. Great, if it lasts as long as the claims on the box state, but I've been burned so many times in the past by integrated fittings giving up the ghost before their time.

Well, this was a little different from the usual Savery offering of bored swaps. Presumably they are using the Well as a feature (lord knows why, some people have more money than sense but hey ho, keeps Dave a Nige off the streets). As it's a feature Well, I would have gone for some expensive Italian Architectural external lights; it was always going to be impossible to hide the fittings so go for some bling ones an add to the feature. Have a look at iGuzzini for inspiration. Most of the fittings can also be specified with different reflectors and lamps to adjust the characteristics of the output.
