I have contacted matt e regards this hot tub they said no not for use other than ev what its designed for, it has a 70v 5 s disconection when earth detected a voltage between 207v and 258v as your submerged and of lower body resistance this would most likely hurt alot, the heater element on another note would have contact to earth pme there for making the water a different potential to that off true earth, touch voltage will raise to tbat of the fault the 50v limit is to stop 50v flowing from two parts at different potential

To meet BS 7671 hot tubs fall outside of Section 702 (See 702.11). As such a PME is deemed suitable for a hot tub supply. However I would also consider and earth rod as going over and above BS 7671 so certainly not incorrect. Excellent video.

A problem using table 4E4A is that the terminations also need to be rated to 90 degrees C too, I'd personally use the 70 degrees figure 4D4A which gives 6mm as 49A which is all good anyway.

Dave, I yet again have tried to edukate a friend with a fart P about earthing his metal shed at the end of the garden, he is on a TT and using the house earth connected by whatever has had to be replaced after the lawn mower hit it ,(fortunatly he has an RCD on the shed supply). His questions and my answers were - TT - Why can't I connect the house earth to the shed earth rod when I fit one ? A - because if the shed earth is better than the house earth then a fault in the house will use the shed earth and there will be a potential and current between them even under normal conditions. TN-C / TN-CS, same question. A - because if that JCB digging the hole the other side of the road chops the cable but does not short the live, then the whole street will be using your shed earth rod as earth and neutral !
@dsesuk
@dsesuk 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly that Steve. This whole 'earth rod at under 20 Ohm on PME' thing sounds odd to me. If you had a PME fault, you'd have a fizzing rod in your garden and a radius of step voltages in the ground around it. So it seems to me anyway, but what do I know?!

Let me say a brilliant discussion of the details of the installation and the difficult issues and unsettled ones in the regulations. Forward thinking about use of the tub and to ensure it’s safe as possible is brilliant. Young sparkys take not this is what you need to go through ahead of the installation - think it through. I will need to watch it more than twice to make sure I appreciate the thought that went in to this. Brilliant. Hot tubs installs you should watch the US installs or at least watch mike holts discussion videos on this - this is more developed in us regulations.

Hi Jac. That was perhaps a poor choice of words. Personally, I believe that someone with life experience who is invested in their future is of more value than a grunting disinterested sixteen year-old, but the latter is often hired by the larger firms as cheap labour. It's hard to give advice, so all I can recommend is to stand out from the crowd and the best way to do that is to show enthusiasm and to demonstrate independent learning. It's shit advice, I know, but I'm not a mass employer and cannot give you anything more definite. If I were hiring, I'd want the candidate to be able to demonstrate competence, interest and enthusiasm for both my business specifically and for the nature of the work in general. I wouldn't be interested in a shoulder-shrugger who is in it for the wages, but someone who has a keen eye for the detail would catch my attention.

I don't think Matt-e devices are suitable for hot tubs - I know they are in the regs for EV chargers but I don't think they are in there for swimming pools/other basins. There's an article in the Summer 2020 Professional Electrician which goes into some of the issues with PME and hot tubs, notably the loading on the combined neutral and earth causing a potential between the PME earth terminal and true earth. It would seem that TT is the best solution. I know the e5 group are currently making noises regarding TN-S on a public network not being guaranteed to not have been made into TN-CS somewhere on the network too.

Having been out of the sparking game for ~30 years at domestic level, I've enjoyed catching up with some of the stuff I was rusty on. What's the recommended method of providing an earth to the armour on SWA these days - drill / scrape the paint off the board and bolt through the gland plate, or is it acceptable to make the connection without the gland plate & bolt if it's not being relied on as an earth path (using 3c SWA for instance) ? Are all IP glands a pain in the ass to fit ?

You have to question the use of a supply, which can be potentially dangerous, but as usual it comes down to cost. Installing a rod is probably the safest option. And as for EV installs, I have not seen anyone install one of those correctly, as JW highlighted even those devices with built in pen protection are not really suitable.
