i was going to comment exactly that. Refs were atrocious in the Habs game as well. Not calling an obvious penalty, then calling a crosscheck in front of the net that had happened like 25 times at that point, then not calling the exact same crosscheck as the Rangers were in PP then scored to take the lead 5 second after that, but then not calling anything after Slaf getting sucker punched, then Quick holding Slaf's stick as he's trying to hit the puck around him, then a by the book interference on a Hab's entrance in off. zone, then Dach being hold on the ice for like 6-7 seconds at least in front on the ref. Habs should also have been penalized on a couple plays as well (i remember one check was dangerous and although the player turned his back at the last second the Habs player (i dont remember who it was) made no effort to slow down -- could have injured the Rangers player). All easy calls - about no gray area. JUST FREAKING CALL THEM no matter which team. Sometime they decide they wont call x type of penalty that they will start calling at some point in the match, and then they stop calling anything because it's the 3rd period and a close game. This is so much inconsistent. People would respect the sport, the refs, and the game results way more.

McDavid high-sticked Hronek in this same game earlier, and got away with a lot. When Garland & McDavid were wrestling, Oilers had possession and if a penalty was called on Garland, it would have been a delayed penalty, which in turn would not have stopped play and then cross check would still had happened (for anyone saying it would’ve been prevented if the refs intervened). The reason McDavid did what he did is because he knows he can get away with a lot more than what a typical player can. I mean he literally high-sticked Hughes last season and drew blood, just to get nothing. This time, McDavid was on thin ice because of his other incidents recently (elbow and slew foot), and the cross check to Garland happened to be blatantly clear, right in front of the refs. The fact we are talking about Mcdavid only getting a couple games is wild. He lined up on the side of a players head. If this was anyone else we would be calling for more than 5 games. Sure there should have been a penalty but it does not make it okay to try and seriously injure someone. Myers should also be suspended but he was going for chest and Bouchard deflected it in to his own face. Still bad that it happened and should be a couple games but it’s not worse that making a conscious decision to cross check the side of someone’s head.
@SC-gs8dc2 сағат бұрын
Matthews got 2 games for the same thing. The crosscheck to McDavid's face last year got 1 playoff game (which is essentially 2-3 regular season games). So 2 is reasonable. Regarding Myers, there was no deflection. Look closely, Bouchard's hands come up behind Myers' stick, not under it. Myers made a conscious decision after the play to crosscheck someone in the face. So his should be 2 as well with maybe an extra game because it was after the play.

McDavid has the puck and gets hit by Garland, and that is framed as a no-no??? The way I saw it, Garland moves to check the guy with the puck (McDavid) then McDavid leans into Garland (the guy who doesn't have the puck) to create open ice. THEN Garland puts the grab on McDavid. Sure Garland's hold was a penalty but that was after McDavid's interference penalty.
@Optimuscrime112 сағат бұрын
Whether you like Garlands play in the final seconds or not you have to admit it’s an effective strategy. Of course McDavid is going to be angry but you simply cannot crosscheck someone in the head. Attempting to justify that like many Oilers fans have been is ridiculous. There’s a reason one is a minor penalty and one is a match penalty. They are two very different things and one does not justify the other. As for Myers, I have no idea what the fuck he was thinking. Chaos giraffe strikes again i guess?

These are my 2 favourite teams in the NHL as a fan of both these teams garlands strategy at the end of the game was solid the winning team is able to do that and with a player as good as mcdavid i understand it. I also understand his frustration with it though (cross checking him the face isn’t the answer) he had a the right idea in a response but not well executed. i doubt he will even get a suspension while the myers cross check i don’t think was as bad as mcdavids i really don’t it didn’t look that bad (if you watched bouchard he held his mouth for 2 seconds then as soon as he got to the bench he was miraculously fine) Canucks needed the win and obviously were willing to do whatever it took. Can’t wait for the game on thursday gonna be a wild one

Feel like this is a situation where the league should be talking to the officials. To avoid this kind of fiasco happening again. They were tied up for a good 10-15 seconds. Call the play right there. Give coincidentals. And any others if there are any. And simply play it 6v5 in this scenario both taking garland and mcdavid out. Mcdavid doesn’t have to have a hearing. Myers doesn’t cross check Bouchard. And now you have another reason for people to tune into the next oilers game against ovechkin. Otherwise teams may just adopt a strategy of just holding down one man for the last 10 seconds. And there ya go. Hockey has turned into a wrestling match. Mcdavid has taken this type of treatment his whole career. He’s bound to crack. Same thing for Crosby. Same thing for MacKinnon who funnily enough got into it with garland when he was in Arizona.

This is just how the NHL operates and why they can be the second biggest joke next to the MLB for officiating in their games. I hope no one thinks this is new, this has just the way it's always been. I grew up watching this kind of BS happen to Crosby and when he talked about it he got called a crybaby, but now he dishes it out and people want to call him dirty. But it's not JUST Sid. It's been so disheartening watching upcoming superstar talent come into the game expecting the rules to actually be enforced ever just to go through multiple seasons of bullshit before they finally throw their hands up into the air and just start doing it themselves. I don't wanna condone a crosscheck to the face but at this stage I am also fed up and done with watching the league shit on their own superstars. Unless the league is gonna do something about it, then I don't really mind the way superstars react. And I will say it again for good measure. It's not just Crosby, McDavid, ect. It's basically any player that is capable of scoring 70 or more points in a season. I wanna fucking watch the good players PLAY without this fucking nonsense of someone blatantly holding a player down in a play and NOTHING being done about it and as Eck said, even if something does get called it's like 10 seconds of PP time at best. Start giving players like, partial punishment for that. If you go after their wallet here that might be a motivator because it's rarely the ones making big money that do this kind of shit regularly. But maybe if you don't wanna do that make it so that player has to start their next game with the similar rules to what you get when you fight. Make em sit at the start of the game for 5 minutes (or more if there's no whistle) and make that team play with a short bench. If 5 minutes isn't enough, do 10, if that's not enough, do 10 and fine em. Make teams and coaches actively work this out of the game.

@aewon20853 сағат бұрын
You may not like it, but to me if its a penalty to keep the best player on the other team down when they already have an empty net so it’s already a 6v5, 5v4 simplifies it and keeps their best player down. It’s a good penalty to take in my opinion
@carlosalvador984 сағат бұрын
Mind you, yes it's both their faults. If ever, you call both of them for minor penalties to start for how that went down but it's the refs...they allow A LOT.. but McD is the one who initiates contact with Garland shoving him to the ice ..yes we know the rest

How, intiate ? He have the puck, turn a little bit, Garland make him loose the puck, the contact was WAY more from Garland then the other way arround, which player will initiate a contact when he have the puck ? @@misterkevlax3852 It wasn't his plan UNTIL he was on the ground. He poke checked McDavid, tried to get around him and was impeded (Interference penalty not called)by McDavid who pushed him to the ice and sat on him. Garland THEN grabbed McDavid (Holding penalty) and McDavid punched Garland (Roughing penalty) and then Garland continued to hold McDavid (Same holding penalty). McDavid and Garland finally got up, and Garland pulled McDavid back down (I'd call an Unsportsmanlike instead of a holding to differentiate the two holds). They both got up and a few seconds later, McDavid crosschecks Garland from a blind side (Misconduct and suspension).

Eck, I love the videos. However, McDavid gets away with A LOT. I was at this game, and he should have been called for highsticking at the end of the 2nd. It was a clear highstick in front of the ref and nada. He got away with one last year in the playoffs against Hughes. And that Minnesota chicken wing! I'm not saying Garland is innocent here, but if the poster child of the league is going to get preferential treatment, teams will have no choice but to play him a little dirty. he still has a lot of maturing to do if he wants to call himself a SCC

Stop acting like McCrybaby was trying so hard to get up. He wasn't. He was trying to sell it hard. Also, stop defending McCrybaby's cross-check. It was a dirty play because he is proving to be a dirty player. Remember a few games earlier he ELBOWED a Minnesota play and gave him a concussion. Funny how when teams play McCrybaby hard, it is somehow "understandable" when he does something dirty. Get out of here with that garbage!

I just dont get this holding someone to the ice nonsense. Keep seeing it here and there and it has no place in the game. It should be an automatic call similar to a goalies mask coming loose. In particularly egregious situations like this where its potentially game changing honestly i wouldnt mind an extra 2 for unsportsmanlike tacked on. Only issue i can see is if two players really are tangled up it could have some "goalie interference" type uncertainty leak in.

It might be placebo but the gap is starting to get longer. Please support me in this mission. Or don't, lol.
@coyote42373 сағат бұрын
I've watched the play a dozen or so times. Garland most certainly does not hit McD. It's the other way around. McD drops his shoulder/elbow and hits Garland. In fact Garland is transitioning and skating backwards. Not saying that's a penalty, or excusing Garland's reaction/holding, but McD initiated the contact.
@SC-gs8dc2 сағат бұрын
Disagree, it was mutually initiated. McDavid looked to be trying to go around Garland (although he's experienced enough to expect the defender to move into his path) and Garland rightly did put his body in the way (doing his part to initiate the hit) while reaching and succeeding in knocking the puck away. Relative body positions is why McDavid ended up on top. Garland then wisely used the rules to his advantage by holding McDavid. Even if he got called for it, it would have been a delayed penalty and was late enough to be meaningless. Veteran play.
