The East Block boycott of the 1984 Olympics was great for myself and my siblings. Before the boycot was announced, my Mom had promised she'd make a batch of chocolate fudge for every gold medal Canada won. Canada'd been woeful at the 76 games, getting one silver. My Mom's fudge was not woeful. Took her ages stirring it and she rarely make it except for bake sales at school. We kids hated that because there was always a rule that you couldn't buy any of the stuff you brought in until everyone else in school had had a shot at. My Mom's fudge was great and always sold before 2 classes had had a shot at it and we never got any. When the east bloc didn't show up for LA84, Canada got the biggest haul of gold medals we ever had. We kids were in heaven. But the fudge-making was so tiring for my Mom it got doled out one batch a month. It was great. She made the best fudge I've ever had and nothing else was close, so that boycott was an ill wind the blew my sister, brothers and I a great good.

Just a note on the Australian who was on the podium with John Carlos and Tommie Smith. His treatment and the intent behind it remains a controversial matter in Australian Olympic history. He was not sent to the next Olympics, and the AOC continues to insist it was not because of any form of retribution. The Australian parliament saw it differently, and in recent years voted to provide an official apology. When he died in 2006, both Carlos and Smith came to Australia and were pallbearers at his funeral. They seemed to maintain a strong friendship and they appreciated his support. He came from a suburb called Coburg in Melbourne, where I was in foster care for a while and he was still remembered at the local school and in the community.

Norman was still definitely fast enough to get picked at the next Olympics, he was probaby Australia's best track star in that event for years after. He was also not invited to be involved in the 2000 Olympics at all, because the AOC totally didn't have it out against him

Yeah, there's a good documentary about Peter Norman called Salute (2008); he died in 2006 but they have a ton of interview footage from him. In 2000 he, as a medalist for Australia, in Australia, was a guest of the American track delegation. Even though Australia denied any mistreatment until after he had died, the black American athletes remembered him for his solidarity with their struggle. I used to live near San Jose State where they installed a very large statue of the podium. Norman asked they not include him, saying the empty podium allows the viewer to imagine taking a stand against racism. He's neat, the documentary is really good.

About Elizabeth Swaney, that skier for Hungary: "In order to qualify for the Olympics, athletes needed to place in the top 30 at either a FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup event or FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships, and score a minimum of 50.00 FIS points. Swaney achieved this by attending competitions with fewer than thirty participants, with one event in China having fifteen (in which she placed thirteenth). Thirteen of her top 30 finishes were a result of her showing up, not falling, and recording a score."

At the time of the 2012 London Olympics I was working for a cycling charity in London and the Olympics were making the same claim as the guest that these lanes would encourage cycling and they could be converted into bus lanes after the games. However I did an FOI request asking how many of the lanes were going to be on the left side or the right side and I think 95% of the lanes were on the right side, making them not that usable for cyclists or convertible to bus lanes. Needless to say they were all taken out after the games and none got converted into bus or cycle lanes, all went back to traffic lanes.

Robbing banks is literally what you go to business school to learn how to do. The whole idea of business is to take money from a bank and get to appropriate the surplus value obtained by using that money for yourself rather than letting the actual owners (ie society as a whole) of the resources also claim the benefits. Advanced bankrobbing is when you not only pry the money away from society, make profits, keep the profits AND the seed capital. For that one, just look at the recent history of the American automobile industry, the mortgage business, and most of the rest of business, actually.

He was approached by Carlos and Smith about joining in, and being quite a religious fellow (who actually believes his religion, in a novel twist!) was eager to help out, but said that it'd be disrespectful for him as a white guy to take any amount of the moment away from Smith and Carlos. So, instead, he offered them his gloves in exchange for the badge he's wearing, and stood by in solidarity! unfortunately he passed away pretty young, his career shattered because, like "Israel", Australia as a white settler colony was not happy that 'ONE OF THEIR OWN' helped The Coloureds, so he was black-listed everywhere in the field he loved and fell to alcoholism. Hold on, the penny's dropped. Trump was shot at in Pennsylvania. So isn't that a failure of the Pennsylvania Secret Service (as showcased in the bonus Liam's Van episode)? I know that membership IDs were available from your good selves but I never applied for one. That said, please could you send me one, so I can send it back to yourselves along with the standard issue monster energy drink and snap brim cap, in disgust at the failure of Liam's organ in guarding the convicted felon Mr Trump?

On the subject of mascots, one of my fave things from the 2000 Sydney games the unofficial mascot that was more popular than the 3 official ones; Fatso the Fat Arsed Wombat. Conceived by an Australian comedy duo, Roy & HG, as a protest to the commercialisation of the Olympics, he was a one of two custom made stuffed wombat plushies with a big fat arse. They'd take him around venues, Aussie athletes would stand on podiums with him, and the AOC & IOC HATED him. The threat of bans only made him more popular with the Aussies, so much so that they eventually relented. He actually made it onto official postage stamps. There was never any official merch but shitloads of bootlegs which, given the whole point of Fatso, was both tolerated and encouraged. They even built a statue to commemorate him years later, which, in typical Australian fashion, was stolen.

My first ever KZbin comment to say that as a PA in Atlanta, in this exact safety third situation, I chose Dekalb farmer’s market at the end of of a 26 hour day. Dreaming of the day when you could tell the producer “my union rep says it goes in the backseat of your fucking car.”

1:07:46 i dunno how the general public felt in the soviet union, but my parents circle were very upset that so much money was spent on the olympics instead of fixing problems. There was also a wave of arrests in the human rights orgs around that time to make it harder to get international attention.

Stadiums are easy to understand: Every single one of them is urban blight. Even when they are active stadiums, they are just empty most days. And it's not that they are empty: They reshape infrastructure all around them for said game day. It's even worse in America, where the extra infra is space for cars that won't be there most of the time. So you either make game day a nightmare, or you overbuild infra, which makes roads too fast, leading to more crashes and wastes space. It's a little less bad when its a purely urban stadium, and the only extra infra cost is underground.... but it's still not good. When the stadium is used very little? They might as well dug a giant hole in the ground, as it'd be less bad

We do have In-N-Out here in Houston, barely. It'll take another decade or two to get full coverage in Texas but eventually it'll be able to hold its own against Whataburger. I kinda feel that In-N-Out just feels a little fresher and less grody, but my go-to burgers here are gonna be Loaded Burger and JLB Eatery. I'm more of an Asian food guy myself, so I prefer going to Chinatown when I've got the time. Also, highly refined peanut oil is generally safe for allergic people, but unfortunately Five Guys is full of bags of roast peanuts as well. If the allergy isn't serious a to-go order is probably safe but I wouldn't risk it.

HOT RUNNINGS edit* madame X is describing a very common thing in the south if you live near an old fancy/heritage area. in pelican town and scottish town and scientology town we have tons of peacocks, they are mean, they are fancy roosters/turkeys, they attack your car after you make a run for it and lock yourself inside, they do shit everywhere, and they call loudly into the night. coyotes do nothing. i will supplement madame X's peacock call with the MAY*YOOOOOOOOOO*

Speaking as someone with personal familiarity with power distribution, refineries and similar facilities are on semi-isolated grids and distribution networks. It gets uglier when they are prioritized using private contractors to bring their own lines back online days to weeks ahead as paying customers. (Also notably they own all their infrastructure one it passes fence-line.) For the simple reason of size, demand, and value as a single customer, a refinery will get their power back fast before residential and other commercial customers.

Gosh, yeah. I feel so defeated and so so bad about everything in my country, constantly watching news, heartbroken because I'm not helping my brothers because I just can't, seeing how the world views us and just go 'Wild, but they need to do that themselves'... I feel abandoned, I feel unable. And then there's The Olympics and WTYP. I feel the right to vent because, well, there's my problem.
