tip tipps, so to speak. Thank you. very interesting. Yes, you definitively need to use the fume extractor. I am using the weller wfe-p pump, in combination with the FE-75 and WSP150 soldering irons. Neet. WSP150 needs an additional kit though.

I have just replaced the tip of my Weller soldering iron as the previous one was black and gunky (using for soldering stained glass). After one small project, it is in the same state. I have used a wet sponge with it and it hasn't made any difference. Already it is effecting it's ability to melt solder. What can I do please?
@ga12f12o8 жыл бұрын
+267mo I have no experience with stained glass soldering, what I do know is, avoid cleaning with a damp sponge. Use the dry cleaning method with brass wool. Instead of a dabbing motion, I recommend a wiping motion from inside to outside; ''Weller How to use a Dry Cleaner - Application Video'' watch 0:35 to 01:05. Always tin the tip after cleaning, this prevents oxidation
@Duraltia9 жыл бұрын
So if the Tip that makes contact with the Tin and Material is getting black do this. How about if the area behind the Tip that never makes contact gets black? Is there a need of action when this happens or is this something that can be ignored and if not, how should it be treated?
@267mo8 жыл бұрын
+Duraltia Same problem for me on brand new tip.

@WellerSoldering9 жыл бұрын
Duraltia, thanks for the question, but there is no need of action. Important is the wettable area, you should always have a tin layer on it. Please have a look to our application videos.

Is Weller flux LW25 safe to use on fine electronics, such as PCB boards when soldering? It has Zinc Chloride in it, and it is said that it is acidic and may corrode and destroy PCB's.

The thing this video misses explaining is that this process of cleaning should be done sparingly as it does deplete the life of the tip. If you have constant problems needing to do this you need to reduce it and look elsewhere on what is causing the problem, overheat, underheat, wrong flux, wrong flux core solder, storage being the most common that come to mind. Use the brass gently as the video shows.
@metzenw86 Жыл бұрын
I don't do a massive amount of soldering, but the Tip on my Weller is over 5 years old and I've never had to retin it. I've always cleaned it in the wet sponge they provide. I've never used the brass. Wish I knew what I was doing that feels right. Maybe I use high quality solder? Been using the same roll for 5 years.
@cdyoutoob Жыл бұрын
@@metzenw86 You actually re-tin it every time you add solder to it. You probably mean you don't corrosively clean and prep the tip for use often. Something common on simple tip irons. Small tubs typically labelled Tip Tinners are really Tip Cleaners. A much higher corrosive flux than normally used in electronics in a compound that includes a powdered solder. Wetted sponge does damage all tips, but it's to do with temperature differential from the temperature it was before hitting the sponge. Thermal shock to tips is less of an issue with leaded solder due to the tip being at a lower temperature, but it still occurs. It's also related the environment and how the user wets the sponge. Older Weller tips are significantly better grade than most of the cheap junk people buy nowadays on low-end soldering irons.

@@cdyoutoob Thanks for the clarification. Yeah, I don't do a whole lot of soldering. But I do keep my equipment clean. My Weller WE1010NA has served me well, as did my WES51 before.

So does the wire wool replace the damp sponge nowadays?
@XSevenSonata6 жыл бұрын
I use a sheet of fine grit canvas sanding paper, folded up into a small square. Those wire wools don't provide enough resistance and abrasion for me. I'd rather use a damp sponge or the green scrubbing top of those dish sponges than that wire wools stuff. I will say, though; some people don't like keeping they're damp sponges clean or replacing them. Because they do start to smell or mold overtime due to them being damp and sitting.
@Anvilshock6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, sanding paper, good way to fucking ruin your tips, scratching off the protective coating, exposing the bare and sensitive core. The brass wool is much more gentle, and a brass brush complements it nicely. The dampness shocks the tip, and steam is surprisingly corrosive. Not to mention that melting and smouldering sponge plastics forms nasty, sticky crud. Sanding paper is the worst advice.

Most likely it is rosin or flux from the solder which prevents it from oxidizing. It is generally pretty easy to clean off with some isopropyl alcohol.

I do this a dozen of times and it still keeps going black after some uses. I have changed 4-5 new tips so far, always the same. I thought that the issue comes from the flux, but first: I need the flux, second: my cheap second soldering iron from T___t doesn't have this problem. It is a pitty not to use a 250€ tool and replace it (successfully) with a 20€ one. Any ideas??
@Smrda13129 ай бұрын
The more you do this the quicker the tip will oxidise. You should be doing this sparingly
@Wichitan3 ай бұрын
You use the flux as needed to keep the tip clean and shiny. If you stop using it, the tip will brown and eventually lose the ability to transfer heat effectively. Then you'll have to perform a deep clean of the tip to restore it. One thing I don't see mentioned is taking a shop towel and rolling it up tight into a 'cigar' shape with one flat end and taping it up to keep it together. That flat end can be used to wipe the tip between fluxes, prolonging the tip's cleanliness. But you'll still need to re-flux regularly. Finally, when you're done, flux the tip real good, pile on a bunch of solder, and *let it cool.* This will keep the clean tip protected until you're ready to use it again. Then you just have to heat it up, wipe the tip off, flux it, and you're ready to go.
@Wichitan3 ай бұрын
@@Smrda1312 Disagree. *Fluxing should be done regularly to keep the tip clean.* Otherwise, you stand to lose heat and introduce contaminants into your workpiece. As for the tip oxidizing; they all do. But keeping the tip clean will prevent oxidation from becoming too much of an issue until it's time to replace the tip.
@Smrda13123 ай бұрын
@@Wichitan Fluxing is not the same as using tip refresher. Tip refresher most definitely damages the tip
@Wichitan3 ай бұрын
@@Smrda1312 Nope. Tip refresher is flux. The purpose of flux is to clean the area of the workpiece when heat is applied to improve solder flow, reducing heat application time and the chances of damaging the workpiece. 'Tip refresher' does exactly the same thing, just without the solder. Of course, if you make it a point to keep your soldering iron tip properly tinned, you can reduce (but not eliminate) wear on the tip. _(Hint: There's a reason that tips are replaceable.)_

Just so happens that the Soldering Tip Activator actually shortens the life of the tip. Reason being is the Activator has Ammonia in it and will eat away the soldering tip. I know this from many years of soldering. If you want new tips sooner then use it.
