Nice review. What about hakko tips vs weller tips? How durable are the finishes? I have a small weller and cannot find any tips for it. Bought some cheap chinese tips but tgey dont last. Was thinking to buy a hakko tip and frankenstein it on my weller but i think it best i buy smthn thats built well. With spare parts available.

I bought a WES 51 just as the 1010 was launching for a steal - so sad for Ya All who didn't see the writing on the wall... These things have their place in life, but they don't do it all. Any one of them will do 90% of what I need to do; I overcame the rest 30 years ago.

Thanks for the honest review. I'm on the fence between these two. I had seen complaints before about the Weller's not holding temperature but I wasn't sure if the Hakko held temp better or if the Wellers temp gage was just more accurate, after seeing the difference in tip designs I'm thinking the Hakko holds temp better. My only concerns with the Hakko now are the less than intuitive controls and 'playskool' color choice, lol.

Weller temp drops, and it doesn't heat up larger wires very well. It's takes a while to heat to temp and no preset Temps. Mine was stolen, so Im giving hakko a try

You're certainly going to enjoy it far more than any modern Weller product. Only thing is depending on if you get the original FX-888D model or the newer revised one, the FX-888DX. The DX model will probably cost you a bit more and the only real difference between the 2 is the controls. The DX has replaced the original's 2 button controls with a single dial that is also pressed like a button. This is absolutely a major improvement that takes the controls from aggravating to just plain usable. Oh and I might as well mention this: If you are a professional and intend to use this station heavily, or just have the funds; you should seriously consider something like the FX-100 station instead. This does mean a pretty hefty price increase, something like 2.5x the price of the 888 last I checked, but it does mean some VERY nice features and compatibility changes. First, you will get induction heating, this along with much newer control hardware means improvements in absolutely everything, the handpiece will heat up even faster, hold its temperature better without any drops, and within even more accurate margins. Second, sleep mode, this feature alone is worth it for heavy use cases because it means the station can automatically reduce tip temp whenever you return the handpiece to the stand. By determining when it's not in use you not only save power but also prevent a lot of unnecessary tip oxidation that occurs when continuously heating it while not in use. These induction units can also heat up fast enough that you won't even notice that it was ever in sleep mode. Then the benefit is the compatibility with different model handpieces and tips, this model comes with a FX-1001 handpiece, which is smaller and better designed than the 8801 the 888 comes with. It is compatible with the FX-1002, which btw is specialized for microsoldering, and the FX-1003 hot tweezers too if that's something you might want in the future. The variety of tips and the overall design of them is superior as well. Take a look at the Hakko catalog for more information, it conveniently lists all the tip types available for each unit too. Oh and be sure to buy oem Hakko tips, the fake ones have greatly varying quality control, with the majority falling on the absolute garbage side of the scale, and it's simply not worth the gamble. Here's that catalog: hakkousa.com/media/manuals/HAKKO_CATALOG.pdf

The WE1010 is a huge step back from the classic industrial offerings from Weller. I got an old PU81 analog station with the WSP80 Iron and it heats up in mere seconds also while having no problems with bigger joints.

Huge Thanks. Like many folks have experienced, the decision between the two is not easy. I heard about the Hakko advantage relative to heat time but seeing the construction was the largest influence to my purchase. Still not a no brainer, there are other things to consider that were not covered (cable length, ergonomics, durability, etc) but I got that info in other media - your video was the icing on the cake.

I’m so sorry but you have the weller totally wrong!! The inner pin is the temperature sensor not the heater as the outer sleeve is the heater. As the sensor is in the very top you’ll see the temperature alter much quicker then the hakko as to the speed does it really matter it’s all down to the serviceable parts

The big / huge disadvantage of the Hakko is the horrible user unfriendly non-intuitive digital menu. I used to own a Hakko, but every time I wanted to change a setting, I ended up searching for the manual. If they would have stuck to the analogue rotation knob, I would agree with you.

I agree about the user interface - designed by an engineer not a usability designer. (I’m a software engineer, so I can pound on engineers.) I figured it out by printing out a larger copy of the user instructions and watched about 5-6 videos. So… User interface sucks. But excellent product otherwise.
